Alrighty everyone, the game is finally out in all primary regions.... IDreamofHime was the first to receive their copy here on the boards. This is the place to discuss it!!!

Welcome to the thread on Negative World where all wondrous Zelda talk can occur. I would recommend that if you wanna talk about deeper-game stuff as we get going, perhaps spoiler-tag it and then describe outside of spoilers where in the game it is. The recent Super Mario 3D Land Discussion Thread is a good example. That'll allow people who aren't too far to read the thread without actually spoiling stuff for them. Just try to be courteous but definitely have fun with the game and discussions!!

Have ye what it takes?

Be sure to hit up the Skyward Sword Game Page and add the game to your collection once you've received yours. Be sure to mark it as "Playing" while you work on it and after you're played it sufficiently, give it a score you deem fitting!

If you've beaten the game, click on over to roykoopa64's Skyward Sword story/ ending discussion (SPOILERS), and general thoughts thread! It's like this thread part deux!!

On this second dungeons on second play through and the boss keeps kicking my ass. I died six times now.... Took a break to catch bugs and I discovered something about bugs I didn't know you could sell them to someone in the knight academy at night. I missed that on my fist play thru

@nate38

Yeah I love pumpkin stabbing.

@Zero

I'm surprised you would take the word of some reviewer...of course if the person has good credentials, I guess I could understand.

Ive only played Zelda games since OoT and that was my first. Skyward Sword is harder than any Zelda game and I am only at the beginning of the game. I surely hope my skills get much, much better or this game is going to be a tough nut to crack!

Just beat the 5th dungeon! Man, both the mini-boss and boss in that was exciting.

Beat the 3rd Dungeon and am about to go speak with someone.

Just blanket statements, of course:

I love the upgrade system and inventory management. This is the first time the Zelda series has done any of this, and I was literally surprised the first time I was told that my pouch was full and I needed to exchange items. I love how you can just buy upgrades for everything you have, and yet there are still specific upgrades for the same items that you have to discover.

I also love the difficulty. The game is HARD! I'm at the edge of my seat for most sword fights, and I love how other items are used to dispatch foes. I find myself returning to Skyloft for potions often.

I LOVE HAVING THINGS TO SPEND MONEY ON!!

Alright, alright already, I need to get back. I am absolutely enthralled with this game.

@grantimusprime

Yes, I love having things to spend money on too. Useful things! Upgrades worth a damn! Etc etc! And hopefully you wont read this before you get back, though it's okay if you did. but the story portion after Dungeon 3... FUCKING ROCKS. Enjoy!

Kikwi guy says, "It's a secret to everybody." Hehe.

@ploot

Came across that today too. Totally let out a small audible laugh. This game does that too me a lot actually. But what an adorable homage.

Actually there's a trick to beating Lizalfos. You just slash towards something that's not it's shield and then it'll taunt you. Just swing at the correct position towards the head and you should get him.

I've also been doing better and better against the Bokoblins. In the past I made the mistake of lining up my strikes but now I figured out that the Bokoblins do swing their parry stances to follow you. The trick is basically to move quickly. You cannot take an eternity to line up a strike. Even if you get blocked just quickly shifted your attack direction and that will work. I'm far more efficient now against the Bokoblins than I was when I first started.

Also... if all else fails you can always to a shield parry to open up the enemy to attack.

Quick shout-out to Poguesquadron for the "how to kill the spiders" tip the other day, until his (admittedly obvious) clue, I was just forcing them into the water or to fall from great heights in order to take them out. Thanks for what should have been a natural thing for me! Cause it's helped out since!

@CPA Wei

"Should" being the key word. I'm off to play a little more now.

K I'm stuck. And Fi isn't helping me shit. Her clue when I'm at a major puzzle is " the enemies here are dangerous." Thanks.

I'm at the puzzle to get into the fourth dungeon. "Remember this design". K, I did. Now what? I remember reading something about a skyward strike but I can't read it again and I tried the skyward strike a buncha times already.

Gotta say this is looking like an unclear puzzle. Frustrated already. If I could get clues from Fi that'd be awesome but she's not telling me jack.

@carlosrox Are you talking about when you have to go to the gate with the unfinished symbol?.
11/25/11, 09:30
@PogueSquadron
Yeah I got it now. I think it was a really poorly worded clue though. There is zero introduction to that drawing mechanic yet they expect me to know how to activate it? Disappointed in that. I was just too far away to activate it properly it seems. I was a few feet out trying to shoot the skyward slashes at it.

Anyone else have any kind of trouble there? I was trying everything. Shooting at it, bombing it, slicing in the direction of the images, etc.

@Simbabbad
Yup. Was telling this to my bro too. The only problem is its really hard to help it sometimes. It's obvious people are gonna get into the game and everything so of course the tech is fine, but... I dunno what to say. Blessing and Curse I guess. It's hard to slowly set up your next slash sometimes, especially in the heat of battle. Guess it depends on planning your attack and muscle memory. EVERY movement has to be totally deliberate. If not, expect mistakes, but I'm fine with that cuz I understand WHY a mistake was made. I know the mistake is mine. Can't blame the tech.

Oh and every time you aim with an item, the game assumes wherever you're pointing is centre. So if your remote is up and you aim your sling, your aim will be screwed for a sec so either recalibrate instantly by pressing down, or make sure your remote is relatively centered before you take aim.

Realize all that, Stephen. Especially the sword stuff Simba mentioned.

But I too have gotten tons better at Bokoblins when they originally kicked my ass. Game combat is so rewarding here.

Finished up the third dungeon. It was absolutely incredible. All the mechanics worked amazingly well and the implementation was very clever. This game seems to be getting better and better.

Only issue that annoyed me: picking up treasures used for upgrades brings up the description for that session even if you already have it. It gets really annoying.

EDIT: I know how it works guys. It's still sloppy. Like with the deku babas you have to slice vertically or horizontally but if you move too quickly it interprets that as a slice and if you go slower it switches. You are better off just picking a direction and trying each time. If you miss it stuns the enemy and it resets. That's clearly not how you were supposed to fight them but it's the most assured way of dispatching them. It's fairly responsive but it's relying on this whole directional system a bit heavily. Since I have started being more reckless with the slices the combat is way easier. The game seems to prioritize speed over accuracy.

The thing about the early enemies are how sloppy to handle it with sword fights. That's what it was like for me.. I barely used ,y shield on the first play through but towards the end you have to. So on my second play through I am better with the shield and the earlier enemies are easier if you block appropriately. Of course you get you but kicked if you get hit but you are a better player.

Finished the first temple. Thought it was safe enough to skim through the thread and skip over anything spoilerish

I'm mostly enjoying it so far, although there have been a few frustrating bits. Carlos mentioned earlier in the thread that some of the uses of motion feel a little tacked on and unnecessary, and I have to agree. Stuff like the balancing acts, mucking with the 'boss key' puzzle thing, etc. Sword combat is generally pretty cool although the fight with Ghirahim felt a bit random in parts. I'm hoping the cool stuff is going to keep coming and eventually outweigh the things that currently feel a bit iffy.

So annoyed when after the Ghirahim fight, that Zeda had ended up leaving before I got to that room. A real 'princess is in another castle' moment. *sigh*

Or the evil cat I beat up and then threw off a cliff.

I love how so many of us did that. Stupid cat. Dropping it off the cliff was immensely satisfying

I think I'm going to be taking this game slow though. Lots of stuff to clean up here.

@Shadowlink

Just keep looking for her sir! You shall find Zelda in time. (the story is soooo goood. you'll be glad she went to another castle so early on lol)

I wouldn't say that the motion control examples you mentioned are tacked on. I mean, they are something new. Simply new ideas. The boss key thing makes that a puzzle in itself, which I prefer over simply find a key and then open the door with a push of an A button. And the balancing act thing, I was annoyed at first cause I wasn't good at it but now I can do it flawlessly so I appreciate it's inclusion. Maybe that's the case with you too.

The item you get midway in the third dungeon is so fun to use. I use it like in a third person shooter, just walking around with my aim out. It was a bit unexpected for me, I was sure I would pick up the hookshot because of all the targets I've seen around.
