Alrighty everyone, the game is finally out in all primary regions.... IDreamofHime was the first to receive their copy here on the boards. This is the place to discuss it!!!

Welcome to the thread on Negative World where all wondrous Zelda talk can occur. I would recommend that if you wanna talk about deeper-game stuff as we get going, perhaps spoiler-tag it and then describe outside of spoilers where in the game it is. The recent Super Mario 3D Land Discussion Thread is a good example. That'll allow people who aren't too far to read the thread without actually spoiling stuff for them. Just try to be courteous but definitely have fun with the game and discussions!!

Have ye what it takes?

Be sure to hit up the Skyward Sword Game Page and add the game to your collection once you've received yours. Be sure to mark it as "Playing" while you work on it and after you're played it sufficiently, give it a score you deem fitting!

If you've beaten the game, click on over to roykoopa64's Skyward Sword story/ ending discussion (SPOILERS), and general thoughts thread! It's like this thread part deux!!

And you really have nothing nice to say? C'mon. Find it sad you could get this far, to the second amazing temple and even more amazing boss and just mention your annoyance with the contros/game. Even when bitching the game out yesterday I found good things to say. Do you like the music? Level design? Art? Beating the dead horse of you not liking the motion controls or how they function in the game without offering any other insight will make for some boring impressions. Shake it up a little?

Uh what difference is there between the Stalfos and Lizalfos? They're pretty much exactly the same, though I'd even say Lizalfos is easier. Think he's only hit me once while Stalfos nearly killed me. I find his pattern easier to predict, too. Also, I've fought several more Lizalfos than the ONE Stalfos I've faced.

Just checking in. Ip hit 19 hours last night and the story revaluations are astounding. Today's my last day of class then I get a five day break. Students are watching a movie all day so I get to geek over Zelda while watching coach carter six times..... Cannot wait to get home and marathon til the end.

How far are you dungeon-wise? I just beat the second dungeon and rushed to the new area just to see what it was and I'm at over 12 hours...

Had a bit of a marathon session tonight. I can/did your post bigG.

Dungeon 5 spoilers: I couldn't help but be annoyed at an old hat bow/arrow being the dungeon's star tool. It could be the second to last regular dungeon, it's time to pull out all the motion control stops before it is too late.

What if you had to drop a timeshift stone between levels, or blow it into place with the gust jar, or roll into place with a roll, or have to use your whip to pick up a timeshift stone. Strange to have all these realistic possibilities then have bow/arrow introduced. Granted timeshifting is neat enough to make any item/action interesting.

I'm in love with the art/design of the sand sea area. The fact it's a sea and the piratey look makes it feel like playing wind waker again. I thought Lanyru would be an inevitable third favorite of mine in visuals until this place.

@carlosrox I just finished what would be considered the fifth Dungeon. I'm going fast. I need to see the story. It's getting so good.

Exactly! Knees + blanket is even worse.

Arggggh, I'm so tempted right now to pack up the Wii and bring it with me to my grandparent's. If it wasn't such a pain to disconnect/re-connect to my surround system, it'd be a no-brainer.

I'm starting to lean towards doing it, though. Last night's session has me wanting to play more. They've got a big HDTV too.

EDIT: So much for my will power, the Wii is packed up.

I'm wondering what I was on when I cabled up my living room. Going to be a pain to get everything back, it's as if I cabled everything in such a way for nothing to ever move, ever again! But once I started unhooking the Wii, it was basically a point of no return.

Sitting here in school watching the same movie six times with kids is boring.. I finished up all I my work and I just can't stop thinking of this game. I left off last night on a great story piece and it was something that I always wanted to happen in a Zelda game. I can't wait to beat it nd see the rest. I can't wait to have end game discussions with everyone.

The strategy for those enemies is to hit them where they're not blocking, but very often they block your first sword swing. You have to come at them with a few swings in quick succession to hit them properly, or else they'll keep blocking you. For Bokoblins, try left right left or vice versa, it works almost every time. For Lizalfos, you need to be more precise, hit them when they're laughing, and if you block their tail swipe it gives you a great opportunity.

@Scrawnton
Wait, why are you watching the same movie 6 times in a row? Musta missed something.

Sounds like you're going pretty fast.

I don't get this "dungeons and overworld blends so well you can't tell when a digeon starts or ends" thing.
What's with the whole "the world is one big dungeon" thing? I've noticed pretty clear beginnings and ends to both the overworld and dungeons.
Doesn't really seem all that different from other Zelda games. It's not like other Zelda games haven't had a lot of stuff to do in the area just before the dungeon...

Like' the area before the Temple Of Time in TP was a pretty big puzzle area too. It was one long puzzle before the dungeon actually began, same as SS.

Anyone else feel the same way?

The only thing separating me from starting Skyward Sword is three hours of work. I'll have three or so hours of unabridged time with it. I'm pumped!

@carlosroxI can see both sides of the argument. One dungeon later in the game (I'll be more specific after you've gotten that far) and the part leading up to it kinda all felt like part of the same quest, to the point where I was surprised when I reached the dungeon because it didn't seem like I had reached it yet. It felt like the next part of what I was currently doing, it just so happened to be a dungeon.

But I agree, earlier in the game didn't feel too much different from the areas before dungeons in previous Zelda games. Maybe it's just because the surface is pretty much just dungeon/puzzle areas without a big overworld or towns and stuff like that, that people have made those comments.
11/23/11, 18:49
@carlosrox I'm a teacher and I have six classes and they're all watching the same movie.

I was about to say, MM blends dungeon/field about as much as skyward does.

Clock Town - Skyloft
Termina Field - The Sky
N/S/W/E sectors - Faron/Eldin/etc.

Ok I give up, here's the skyward song I think got inspired by LA shop music (sub 5 hour spoilers):

I'm at the fourth dungeon and yeah, there are definite clear beginnings to dungeons. So far they've been indicated by the "reveal." That is, Link is presented with some stairs that go deep into a dark area, usually with some characters warning about monsters that lurk inside. Cue the eerie music and clip of Link slowly walking down the stairs. The overworld has a lot going on in terms of puzzle solving, but there's definitely a clear differentiation between the overworld and the dungeons.

The only time I really was like "is this going to be a dungeon?" was when I was in the Great Tree. I think there's a chance I might be going back there because there seemed to be floors on the map, and it looked like there were some areas high up that could possibly be reached with a hookshot or something.

Right now it kind of feels like Metroid Prime 3, only if Metroid Prime 3 had dungeon-like areas within the various locations on the planets.

One thing I've noticed playing it last night...I feel like they're telegraphing some important reveals in regards to secret locations a little too much. When you're in Faron Woods for the first time, when you see the giant symbol on the gate in front of Lake Floria, it's like, you KNOW you'll be going there at some point. There's also an area in Lanayru Desert, I think it's like a big sand waterfall, and it's like...you know there's something behind there that you'll probably go back to at some point. I wish they were a little more devious on the map about these things. Remember in Ocarina of Time when you go to the Forest Temple for the first time? I remember being kind of shocked that it was even there. Maybe I'm just more experienced at 3D Zelda and I pick up on these things? I wonder if SS will start being better in that aspect. So far I think it's been pretty obvious where I would be backtracking to, both via the map screen and the visuals in the actual game. Not necessarily a bad thing though. My god, Lake Floria was beautiful and really fun to find. The perfect point in the game to inject some blue/violet.

@PogueSquadron When you had to go learn Saria's Song, you didn't wonder what was the entrance right above her?
11/23/11, 20:10
@Renjaku I guess I wasn't trained to look at the surroundings enough, but I guess I just assumed it was decor, part of the environment to make it look more like ruins.
11/23/11, 20:18
@carlosroxOf course. The game does a lot well. Pretty much everything is well done. It's interesting you bring up level design though. This game feels a lot more separated than other Zelda games. The world does not feel nearly as cohesive as any of the past Zelda games. That's probably just due to the nature of flying and jumping down to the surface.

Just a reminder.

Also, for anyone who has entered the 2nd area and/or dungeon, I have a question for you. When I helped that one NPC and got the Digging Claws I was presented with two options. I chose the one which got me the Digging Claws obviously but the other one said Rupees. Considering how useful and seemingly primary the Digging Claws are, is there any way to actually not get these due to picking that other option? Does it delay you into getting it anyway? I'm just curious cause I wondered what happens when you go with the other option. Anyone do that?

@DrFinkelstein
Yeah I was wondering that myself since you need them right after that. There's a chest in that area though, maybe you'd have to get it there instead?
