Mario Kart 8 Discussion (Nintendo Wii U) [game]

Mario Kart 8 on the Wii U
9.14/10 from 37 user ratings

Welcome to the official discussion thread for Mario Kart 8 on the Wii U!

To start, please add this game to your log, add it to your collection (if applicable), and (when you are ready) rate it using the link above!

This May, one game will define MULTIPLAYER FUN on Wii U. That game, is Mario Kart 8!

Mario Kart has been a Nintendo staple since it's SNES debut over two decades ago. Only two Nintendo products neglected to have an entry and each entry that has existed is a charming title in someone's eyes. Entries like Double Dash on Gamecube helped push the boundaries of creativity and uniqueness, while more recent titles have continued to refine a core experience. Mario Kart 8 seeks to continue that trend with it's jaw-dropping HD visuals, Anti-gravity racing, and incredibly well-designed tracks.

With all the characters known, the deep customization possibilities to each individual racer, the classic 32-total track count... there's so much to discuss and share and debate. Reviews are just coming in now and while I'll post a few below but they're not all gushing with pride. User Stephen recently made a thread aiming to have a more comprehensive list of reviews available. So... Are you impressed with the Mario Kart TV feature, excited for the Super Horn, or bummed at how battle mode has changed? Share your thoughts on the game below, now, upon release, and well after! Below you'll find a list of Nintendo Network IDs as compiled by our own Mop It Up! Be sure your friends are added to your console!

Why not sign up for a (free) account?

Not sure if I'll be on tonight. I'll give it a shot.

I'm starting to just wish the coins weren't in this game at all. I feel like they don't really add anything. They just make it even more annoying when you get hit.

I guess it's fun for Time Trials but it also makes you not really race the track - you have to go out of your way to get coins to build your speed up, sometimes taking turns differently than you really would. All in all I think it's a mechanic that was better left on the cutting room floor.

@PogueSquadron

You don't have to go out of your way to get them. I always run the best racing line in time trials, and that always runs into ten coins. After that, run the line, don't change your route (unless it's Grumble Volcano, then be careful). You'll beat the staff ghosts 31/32 times (the exception was Bone-Dry Dunes, I had to get a little creative for that one).

The only thing I don't like is earning 10,000 for the last part unlock I have. I have no idea how close I am (probably about halfway there).

For some reason, I haven't been able to join races that my NNID friends are participating in these past couple days. Once I join someone and hit the character select screen, a box pops up informing me that I'm unable to join. Has anyone here experienced this?

@pokepal148

I like the preview image for your Bone-Dry Dunes replay. That low-hanging sun in the distance and Roy power-sliding towards the camera give it style points.

@ludist210 I feel the main issue with coins is that you lose 6 of them for being hit in most gliding segments due to lakitu.
06/13/14, 20:31
@TheOldManFromZelda Why do you sound upset when you say this? I'm sorry!

@PogueSquadron I agree, coins don't add anything to the game, if they do anything then it's make things worse.

@Mop it up I'm going to be controversial and say the same thing about stats in mario kart.
06/13/14, 23:44
@Octorockin

I've gotten that message a bunch. No explanation.

@Mop it up

Haha, not complaining! I'm glad you're on. I wish more people would join us!

I'd honestly be fine if they went back to just 3 different choices... light, medium, heavy. Everything else would be superficial.

As it stands, I never quite know whether I could be doing better with some significantly set-up.
06/13/14, 23:57
Yeah, unfortunately the error messages are more basic this time around. Instead of getting "the room is full" like you would get in Mario Kart Wii, you just get "you were unable to join" and then you don't know why. If you don't know why, you don't know if you should bother trying again or not. When a friend room closes, you just get "a communication error occurred" instead of "The room is now closed."

As for stats, I'd be okay with no or simplified stats, I'd be fine if characters and vehicles were more about visuals than anything else. This game already tries to hide its stats and has several you can't even see, so if they are going to go that far then they might as well just remove it.

@Zero @Mop it up

Agreed. In fact, I think Super Mario Kart did it perfectly -- 4 well defined types of characters. So simple, but it's all you need.

Good races, JKR!* Good to know us Negative World folk can mop up the random competition.

* Except for Toad Harbor when you ran me into the trolley, you jerk! I still managed a fourth place finish though.

Creating a room for Mario Kart if anyone wants in.
06/14/14, 06:36
@PogueSquadron, @Mop it up

Coins are awesome, and make the game better. Shut your mouths.
06/14/14, 06:41
We got a Lou...calling on Mop! and Zero! and...others.
06/14/14, 06:53
@ludist210

Those were some awesome races! You're good! Too good...

Thanks for the games! Hopefully I'll catch you (and others, I still seem to rarely SEE anyone online) again soon.
06/14/14, 07:02
Alright, on Mop's advice, I'm, going to back out and start a worldwide room after this set.
06/14/14, 07:26
@GameDadGrant I would be interested in hearing an actual counterpoint, if you have one.
06/14/14, 07:37
After you made your room, I watched the Stanley Cup for a bit, so when in tried to join, your room must have been full.
06/14/14, 16:16
@-JKR-

Ha! Most of the randoms weren't very good...I don't think I ever finished outside of the top three except once. Mount Wario was close, but I got a mushroom at the end and managed to get third.

I only play online now, so I'm sure I'll see you again soon.
