This May, one game will define MULTIPLAYER FUN on Wii U. That game, is Mario Kart 8!


Mario Kart has been a Nintendo staple since it's SNES debut over two decades ago. Only two Nintendo products neglected to have an entry and each entry that has existed is a charming title in someone's eyes. Entries like Double Dash on Gamecube helped push the boundaries of creativity and uniqueness, while more recent titles have continued to refine a core experience. Mario Kart 8 seeks to continue that trend with it's jaw-dropping HD visuals, Anti-gravity racing, and incredibly well-designed tracks.


With all the characters known, the deep customization possibilities to each individual racer, the classic 32-total track count... there's so much to discuss and share and debate. Reviews are just coming in now and while I'll post a few below but they're not all gushing with pride. User Stephen recently made a thread aiming to have a more comprehensive list of reviews available. So... @PogueSquadron I agree, coins don't add anything to the game, if they do anything then it's make things worse.

I'd honestly be fine if they went back to just 3 different choices... light, medium, heavy. Everything else would be superficial.

As it stands, I never quite know whether I could be doing better with some significantly set-up.

Yeah, unfortunately the error messages are more basic this time around. Instead of getting "the room is full" like you would get in Mario Kart Wii, you just get "you were unable to join" and then you don't know why. If you don't know why, you don't know if you should bother trying again or not. When a friend room closes, you just get "a communication error occurred" instead of "The room is now closed."

As for stats, I'd be okay with no or simplified stats, I'd be fine if characters and vehicles were more about visuals than anything else. This game already tries to hide its stats and has several you can't even see, so if they are going to go that far then they might as well just remove it.

Agreed. In fact, I think Super Mario Kart did it perfectly -- 4 well defined types of characters. So simple, but it's all you need.

* Except for Toad Harbor when you ran me into the trolley, you jerk! I still managed a fourth place finish though.

After you made your room, I watched the Stanley Cup for a bit, so when in tried to join, your room must have been full.

Ha! Most of the randoms weren't very good...I don't think I ever finished outside of the top three except once. Mount Wario was close, but I got a mushroom at the end and managed to get third.

I only play online now, so I'm sure I'll see you again soon.

Jason and I played for a little bit, didn't see any friends on all night (though BP joined us for a couple) until Conzo joined us for a race, and I left (Jason didn't want to play anymore) and realized AFTERWARDS that he just joined up (sorry, SC!).

I like how mop_it_up is complaining about tracks not requiring enough skill in mario kart. As if mario kart isn't a mostly luck based game.

Also I feel that the tanooki tail, fake item box(with item blocking capabilities), and the mega mushroom should have returned, and the star should have been given a nice speed boost, triple mushrooms shouldn't roam around you for others to steal and items should take at most two coins.

Also make weight a decent stat, for christ sake.
