Mario Kart 8 on the Wii U
9.14/10 from 37 user ratings

Welcome to the official discussion thread for Mario Kart 8 on the Wii U!

To start, please add this game to your log, add it to your collection (if applicable), and (when you are ready) rate it using the link above!

This May, one game will define MULTIPLAYER FUN on Wii U. That game, is Mario Kart 8!

Mario Kart has been a Nintendo staple since it's SNES debut over two decades ago. Only two Nintendo products neglected to have an entry and each entry that has existed is a charming title in someone's eyes. Entries like Double Dash on Gamecube helped push the boundaries of creativity and uniqueness, while more recent titles have continued to refine a core experience. Mario Kart 8 seeks to continue that trend with it's jaw-dropping HD visuals, Anti-gravity racing, and incredibly well-designed tracks.

With all the characters known, the deep customization possibilities to each individual racer, the classic 32-total track count... there's so much to discuss and share and debate. Reviews are just coming in now and while I'll post a few below but they're not all gushing with pride. User Stephen recently made a thread aiming to have a more comprehensive list of reviews available. So... Are you impressed with the Mario Kart TV feature, excited for the Super Horn, or bummed at how battle mode has changed? Share your thoughts on the game below, now, upon release, and well after! Below you'll find a list of Nintendo Network IDs as compiled by our own Mop It Up! Be sure your friends are added to your console!

@Mop it up

I don't know. Maybe it was being weird.

TO ME, it looked like it was timing out on you nearly every time, and just picking Tick Tock Clock by default.

I mostly choose random. Like I said in game one time, I like to be adequate on all tracks, and an expert of none.

Except Donut Plains 3.

@Mr_Mustache No I meant I thought they would just present you with 3 courses and you were definitely going to end up racing one of those three. This way adds a way out of having to race one of those three. Of course, I've noticed few people actually pick random, so in most cases it works out the way I thought it worked anyway.

Fun games tonight, Zero!

Then you and everyone else bailed.

When are they going to fix this communication error thing????
06/12/14, 06:38
@Guillaume I had to go get dinner! It was like 9 o'clock here and I hadn't eaten yet!

@PogueSquadron I have yet to experience it, though it sounds pretty crappy.

@TheOldManFromZelda

I choose random all the time too. It gives Stephen and his goons fits for some reason.

Thing is, I only do it because if i choose the ones I want specifically, I still get complaints. At least this way I can redirect their bitching towards the game itself.

@SeVeN CDN No.

It's Kathrine.

I think this was the first time we've met in the game - hopefully it won't be the last!
06/12/14, 08:42
Yeah it was fun, once I warmed up. I look foward to many more races

@Mop it up

I ALWAYS end up playing with you, Mop. You're usually the only other person online when I'm on!

@TheOldManFromZelda

I'll make up for it...I'll try to be on later tonight.

I haven't seen this discussed anywhere yet... So apparently MK8 is (or will be, after a patch) compatible with the Amiibo figurines.

How is this going to work? Anyone with thoughts or ideas?
06/12/14, 20:46
@chrisguy

They haven't given specific details on how that will work. I imagine it will be patched in.
06/12/14, 20:53
@chrisguy don't care.

If you're playing MK8 on-line and one of the other players puts his Samus figurine down, and then Samus comes from nowhere and zaps all the other karts, would you care then?

I guess that's my question. How are they going to employ these things in MK8 so that people will want to use them, but not make them an "instant buy-a-win?" In the Smash Bros demonstration, they sort of looked like they would be more powerful assist trophies. The logical MK equivalent would be the "?" power-ups. Could this be done in a balanced way?

@chrisguy

Amiibo might not interest him at this time.

As for Mario Kart 8...wouldn't you think there would be specific amiibo for that game? The amiibo that we've seen so far are branded for Super Smash Bros. Just a thought.

@chrisguy

That would be silly if it was just an instant win function. I think in some interview, they mentioned something regarding Mario Kart perhaps approaching a more "Smash Bros" build, meaning that it could start introducing characters from other franchises. I wonder if it would simply be to unlock new characters then?
06/12/14, 22:45
The only thing I can think of for Ambiibo is that you could just store all your ghost data on one thing automatically....but still, this would be useful mainly for Wii U's not connected to the internet.

^^If it's all just unlocking characters, what about existing racers like Mario and Peach? What happens when you put their Ambiibos on the Gamepad? I'd kind of just like to see it unlock new costumes and stuff.

IMO Ambiibo would be cool enough as a little "key" that unlocks fun little bonuses in different games. Way better than paying for costumes in Batman or whatever.
