This May, one game will define MULTIPLAYER FUN on Wii U. That game, is Mario Kart 8!
Mario Kart has been a Nintendo staple since it's SNES debut over two decades ago. Only two Nintendo products neglected to have an entry and each entry that has existed is a charming title in someone's eyes. Entries like Double Dash on Gamecube helped push the boundaries of creativity and uniqueness, while more recent titles have continued to refine a core experience. Mario Kart 8 seeks to continue that trend with it's jaw-dropping HD visuals, Anti-gravity racing, and incredibly well-designed tracks. With all the characters known, the deep customization possibilities to each individual racer, the classic 32-total track count... there's so much to discuss and share and debate. Reviews are just coming in now and while I'll post a few below but they're not all gushing with pride. User Stephen recently made a thread aiming to have a more comprehensive list of reviews available. So... Are you impressed with the Mario Kart TV feature, excited for the Super Horn, or bummed at how battle mode has changed? Share your thoughts on the game below, now, upon release, and well after! Below you'll find a list of Nintendo Network IDs as compiled by our own Mop It Up! Be sure your friends are added to your console! Mop It Up's NNID List of Mario Kart 8 Players

I'm game for chattin' it up!
Details for the online seem pretty scarce so far, and that's sort of the thing I'm buying this game for (1P is pretty by the numbers, which is kinda lame, but expected). I hear that the VR works as sort of a combination of MKW's and MK7's.
What I didn't like about MK7 was that you ONLY gained VR points. While this alleviated the frustration of losing a ton of points when having a bad race (like in MKW), it made points kind of...er, pointless. Like, if you get points for every game raced, they really don't mean anything at all--just that you played the game a ton. In MKW, a high VR score meant you had to play well, and maintain it, buddy!
The good news is that VR goes to 9999 again, with you losing some if you do poorly (like MKW), but the number of VR points lost is much lower than in MKW, so losses aren't quite so devastating. This is a good change, IMO, when in a game like Mario Kart, you're inevitably going to have bad luck, so it stinks whenever you get a HUGE penalty equal to 5 or 6 wins at that point.
So I'm looking forward to the online...however! I hear that you can no longer pick your course online...? Like, you can choose random, or one of three randomly-generated courses per match. Sounds...limiting. I get that they probably did this because of track spammers in the past, but you can work around that by simply locking out the most recent track (or two), rather than limiting the choices so much.
Anyway, if anyone's got other details on how the online works (or if I've got any of this wrong), I'd love to hear it. |
