HAL's space-based shooter port. The arcade version itself is playable in
Williams Arcade's Greatest Hits.
The player takes control of a spaceship, protecting people on the ground from an alien invasion. There are a variety of enemies to deal with in this fairly straightforward game, but the difficulty comes with the differences between them. From Landers (dime-a-dozen ships that are sent to capture humans) and Baiters (tiny ships that appear when you take too long) to Firebombers and Swarmers (and more!), success is measured by your ability to adapt. You are scored on each ship downed and remaining civilians at the end of each Wave. You also get bonuses for rescuing would-be captures in midair, and more points for returning them to the ground.
While the scenery looks like something out of
Gradius, it should be noted that players can fly in any direction, and the rocky landscape (which will cause you no harm) wraps around. If you continue to fly to the right, you'll end up where you originally were in a hurry. Theres also a Stargate (the name that this game was originally known as in arcades, but changed for home consoles due to legal issues) near the top of the screen that will take you to the closest person in the midst of abduction (for advanced players, flying through the Stargate with four rescued humanoids will advance you a handful of levels). In addition to this, a cloaking device has been implemented as well.
Trivia: Our very own
Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!! "borrowed" many of the sound effects and some music from the 1983 Famicom version. Sharp-eared players can hear bits and pieces of a Glass Joe bout -- start to finish -- in just one minute of gameplay.
