Game IS NOT Region Locked: NA + SA CAN PLAY with Europe + Australia + Africa(?)

*THE DEMO IS A DEMON, JUST GET THE GAME!!*

Welcome to the Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate thread! This will be our headquarters for coordinating our Hunts, sharing stories of war, and helpful hints for our brothers-in-arms, compatriots, friends, and neighbors. Please be mindful of folks' different definitions of "spoilers," and remember that not EVERYBODY played Monster Hunter Tri on the Wii, though everybody totally should've.

The "burden" of running this thread has been placed upon me but...I can't do it alone. I will lean on Maxi and others to help with the heavy lifting occasionally, both in planning things and also in feeding this thread. Please keep it bumped (once we get going). If you could, let us know if you're getting this game, WHEN you're getting this game, and what your aspirations are so we can get us situated in groups with likeminded people. Do you want to barely play this game? Is this going to be your new #1? The most fun with this game is had when you get to go out with a group of guys week in week out, so if we can find someone with a schedule similar to yours, you'll have the most fun with it.

@PogueSquadron

It's different monsters, but it's the same demo.

played the 3DS demo... is there a way to harvest parts? is it automatic or has this been gimped out of the demo?
02/21/13, 21:34
I'm going to play the demo later on ... looks like fun but won't be getting it till more funds flow my way.
02/21/13, 22:47
@Anand I didn't mean to imply that no one would like it. I just know a few people who tried the demo and hated it, and almost didn't buy the game, but then ended up getting it and loving it. So it was more that I was saying if someone didn't like it, to still give the full game a chance if possible.

I'm mainly checking out the demo to see how it looks on my TV. Downloading both versions tonight (currently am on Wii U, getting Crashmo on 3DS first then getting the demo). Expecting it not to be that impressive from what people are saying; dropping you into the game with no tutorial, but at least I can see how it looks!
02/22/13, 02:04
@vids it's not automatic, but yeah they did leave it out. Although i haven't tried to harvest anything from the smaller monsters yet...

After playing both demos for... waaayyyy too long, i'm a bit more excited. For some reason, the water looks worse than it did in Tri, but that's about my only complaint. I will say (as previously mentioned) that if you're new to the franchise, the demo does a poor job at teaching / showing you what the game is about, outside of well... hunting monsters.

Both versions are very pretty. I'm particularly impressed by the 3DS version, it looks noticeably (imo) better than Tri AND runs at a slick 60 FPS. The Wii U version is also 60 FPS, but runs in 1080p. The 3DS one takes a lot of getting used to, whether you're using "the claw" or the digital D-pad on the touch screen. I strongly prefer, and recommend, the digital D-pad. Especially if you'd like to avoid arthritis. There's also a new "target camera" that should help speed up your acclimation, but probably makes it a bit more accessible for newcomers who are trying out either version.

Also, there's some big features missing from the demo, i.e. online (which is exclusive to Wii U) / local co-op & Arena Challenges.

I'm pretty sold on the 3DS version, might have to double-dip.... damn you, self-control. One more note: Plesioth is a jerk.

@vinniebrock

I carved some small guys. Good 'ol..haha, I forgot their names..the yellow guys with their Immature Sponges. I crushed a pile of Jaggis, too. JUST LIKE OLD TIMES. I really gotta get used to this thing. I was flailing all over, and I was often out of striking range against the enemy when I thought I was there. Won the first one with less than 5, and hit the time limit on the 2nd one. Blargh.

Demo is almost like the first one, where yeah, you have no idea whats going on. I don't know how there can be such a "bad" demo for such a GREAT game. Its confusing!

And yes, Plesioth is a jerk. Does he have a hard outer shell that my Sword and Shield have trouble denting? I swear I was getting glancing blows. Gonna be a long year..

@Mr_Mustache i think the top of his fins are hard, my Switch Axe bounced off a few times. I ran out of time, too... That 20 minute time limit is pretty lame, probably should have mentioned that in my last post. Also I was having the same problems with flailing at Plesioth, but not on the 3DS demo. The 3D actually helps with water combat, and would probably be great with the CPP.

@vids Like @Mr_Mustache said, you can indeed carve the smaller creatures. If you're just talking about general harvesting (herbs, shrooms,etc.) I believe you can also do that.

i played the demo and the game is pretty much what i wanted, an hd version of the wii game with extra bells and whistles. Even though the geometry is the same and some of the textures look like a wii game, this game is still gorgeous. I am not really a graphics person but i am satisfied with how this game looks based upon the demo.

So I played the "Easy" side of the MH demo - just barely killed the monster within the time limit..I must have had 30seconds left...

Yeah it's pretty but not mind blowing - even for someone who isn't used to HD software. I may wait even longer to pick this one up as it really is just like the Wii game. A plus is that you can use the touchpad to do some actions like taking in potions or signaling your cha chas. Another plus is that even if you don't have a WiiU Pro controller, a Wii Classic Controller/Pro will work just fine.

I'll try the 'hard' side later on but may just wander off and explore and study the grapics a bit better rather than hunt the monster - I was obvously out of practice as even the Easy guy was pissing me off, kept running away on me..

This is a good test for Wind Waker HD - granted, you are upgrading two generations rather then just one, but the cell shading still holds up well. Also, I think I would be more inclined to pick it up if HD WW has a lot more options etc rather than just a facelift. It is a Zelda game though, so WW has that going for it but an important note to mention, and this is getting back to MH, the geometry in MH I believe is the same with just newer textures - WW may have a true overhaul.

On the 3DS version? No they didn't. Sheath your weapon and press A.

Played both demos on Easy (it's the exact same demo). Got slaughtered on the Wii U version using the Great Sword, but aced the 3DS version with the Switch Axe. Maybe I've found my preferred weapon.

Getting the Wii U version for sure, not so sure about the 3DS version...yet.

Let me just say that I really, really like the "turn-to-face-monster" button. It really helps after you've been hit and disoriented instead of just flinging the camera around. Besides that, the game feels more fluid than Tri. I read that it's running at 45 or 60fps instead of 30, and it makes a difference. I tried the dual blades, and eliminated the rabbit monster quickly. Then with the bow, I struggled and didn't defeat the Plesioth. I switched to the hunting horn and took care of him in about 15 minutes. I like the bow, I think it could be a good support weapon, but I wouldn't go solo with it (same like a gunner). Do the bow users have to wear a separate armor like gunners?

About the touch screen, is there a way to set items for quick-use? There really should be.

Anyway, it felt great to be back on the hunt. F'n love this game. Can't wait to play online with some of you guys.

@anon_mastermind

Turn-to-face-monster? You mean the one that flips the camera, right? If it flipped my character too, that would be helpful.

As far as I can tell, there isn't a way to set items to tap and use them, but I didn't fiddle around with the touch screen much (and it's only a demo, so not sure if they would implement that in a demo). I hope there is. Sure would make hunts easier.

March 19 can't come soon enough!

I only had a chance to play 10 minutes of the 3DS version last night, but it's pretty much Monster Hunter on the small screen. I was having a lot of trouble adjusting to the camera controls using the touch screen virtual d-pad. Which button centers the camera on the monster? Pressing L just centers the camera behind you like it does in Tri.
02/22/13, 16:27
@ludist210
Yeah, the "lock-on" button. It's not really lock-on, but it does lock the camera to the monster briefly. It's really useful underwater, and after being hit.

@canonj
When near a large monster, you have to press the "target" button on the touch screen, then whenever you press L it will turn to face the monster.
02/22/13, 16:29
@vinniebrock

True; I got a Beast Tear from the first thing, which was dropped mid-battle.

@anon_mastermind

Ha! When I saw "Bow," I thought "MIKEY!" for some reason. It just seems like a 'you' thing to do, running around, dropping arrows in dudes like Legolas!

I DO like the wider variety of weapons, even if I won't be using them all. Neato!

EDIT- Expanding on my previous post and this one, I will say that I once again (like the Wii version) felt INCREDIBLY overwhelmed in BOTH fights, like I didn't have the appropriate tools for the task. Playing the game as intended, on a sliding scale, and actually crafting/bringing the appropriate..class? of weapon (ie: fire for frost, etc) will make things easier, as well as allow the user to feel more ATTACHED? to the character on screen. I feel NOTHING for Demo Guy, but when Mustache is out there..I dunno, I don't want that guy going down.

I wanna gather some mushrooms, and kill 7 Jaggi.

@Mr_Mustache
Haha yeah, I think I'll get some use out of it. I read on another board that if you press X and A together, it uses the coated arrows which do much more damage. I was wondering why I never paralyzed the Plesioth whilst I did have para arrows selected.

Are you going SnS again?

Haha, OF COURSE!!

I'll probably build other stuff if/when I get "bored" (as I did with my weapons last time; I didn't get bored, but when I had too many items, too much money, etc), I might branch out. For Big Time Online though, oh yeah, Sword& Shield, baby.
02/22/13, 20:46
I think I'm starting Switch Axe from the get-go, then will mess with other weapons. Switch Axe is bad for defense but great for offense (which is what I'm better at anyway).

I'm hoping this game will last me a while. I kind of got burned out on Tri for whatever reason, but this rekindled my fire.
02/22/13, 21:29
I'll check again tonight and see what works best. Tried sword and board and it took forever to kill the rabbit monster. Didn't help that I really had no idea what I was doing. 3DS I checked out the massive sword, but didn't go very far.
