Mario Kart 8 Discussion (Nintendo Wii U) [game]

Mario Kart 8 on the Wii U
9.14/10 from 37 user ratings

Welcome to the official discussion thread for Mario Kart 8 on the Wii U!

To start, please add this game to your log, add it to your collection (if applicable), and (when you are ready) rate it using the link above!

This May, one game will define MULTIPLAYER FUN on Wii U. That game, is Mario Kart 8!

Mario Kart has been a Nintendo staple since it's SNES debut over two decades ago. Only two Nintendo products neglected to have an entry and each entry that has existed is a charming title in someone's eyes. Entries like Double Dash on Gamecube helped push the boundaries of creativity and uniqueness, while more recent titles have continued to refine a core experience. Mario Kart 8 seeks to continue that trend with it's jaw-dropping HD visuals, Anti-gravity racing, and incredibly well-designed tracks.

With all the characters known, the deep customization possibilities to each individual racer, the classic 32-total track count... there's so much to discuss and share and debate. Reviews are just coming in now and while I'll post a few below but they're not all gushing with pride. User Stephen recently made a thread aiming to have a more comprehensive list of reviews available. So... Are you impressed with the Mario Kart TV feature, excited for the Super Horn, or bummed at how battle mode has changed? Share your thoughts on the game below, now, upon release, and well after! Below you'll find a list of Nintendo Network IDs as compiled by our own Mop It Up! Be sure your friends are added to your console!

Why not sign up for a (free) account?

@Mop it up

Yep, learned this using time trials myself. I feel it really matters too.

@Mop it up

Cool, good to know, thanks! No wonder I always boost at the start into last place. :P
06/16/14, 22:21
um, so, I didn't know about this before but, if you want accurate, up to date info on your friends' Time Trails (along with a bunch of other stuff) you can see it super easily on mariokart.tv. You sign in with your NNID and then it's the best thing ever. I urge you all to check it out!

@NinSage
Holy heck, that's awesome! Although it would be more useful in the game.... like they had on MKWii. What gives?

@Super_Conzo

I felt bummed. When I enter a friends room, I try to go "HELLO!" and then they're like "oh man, I recognize that face!" I fell out, saw your mug, and went "..awww.." Sorry buddy. We'll race again soon!

@Zero

I COULD'VE BEEN, WAY TO CALL.

@Infinitywave

Glad you knew that was me! I wasn't sure if your recognized me at all since there is no mentioned of "Mustache" at all. That was the most UK'ers I've run with at the same time, and after joining you I was class of the field (in terms of VR score). Glad we could end the way we did, 3 1-2 finishes out of the final 4 or so runs. Nice! (And to confirm, I 100% joined you via the Friends section.)

@TheOldManFromZelda

I went from 1st to 12th in about 6 seconds on The Airport Stage the other day. "This is my last race coming up." And then I won the next race, so that part was cool. But yeah, Annoying Town.

@kgtennispro

..oh, sorry. I protect Lou CONSTANTLY when its just us running, and I do favoritism towards NW people in general as well. Heck, Kenny, I raced you clean at Moo Moo Meadows that one time! I could've been a stupid freakin' jerk to you, but we're budddds.

@pokepal148
@NinSage

Ink F's me up. Often.

@Zero

Sounds like you need some NASCAR in your life.
06/17/14, 01:04
Gotta love how everyone just ignores me
06/17/14, 01:11
@VofEscaflowne

I don't ignore you! And I responded directly to you in your thread about Lufia. PFFFFT.

Wait, you can max out your boost? How is this?

Didn't you play Mario Kart DS? I thought you played that game back in the day. It's been this way in Mario Kart since 2005.

@Mop it up I'd be interested in seeing some official breakdown of the numbers. Because my experience has definitely been that the further up you get, the weaker items you get, in general. It has not been "nearly totally random" at all.
06/17/14, 03:15
edit: Dunno why I posted this. Conversation was over.

@Mop it up

Good racing last night! Sorry I had to bail for a few minutes once, and I'm also sorry for picking a track instead of waiting for more people. At least I won our head to head battle! Haha.

@Mop it up

Not sure what happened in our random regional room. I guess we all got booted off in the middle of the Twisted Mansion race.

@GameDadGrant

I only played Mario Kart DS alone. I started to play online, and it was filled with snaking cheat mongers who I wanted to find in real life and break the legs of, so it did bad things to me emotionally and I stopped so I would not feel that way anymore.

It's news to me.

@GameDadGrant

Dude, boost starts were a thing since 1992. Where have you been?
06/17/14, 18:01
Just popped on for a few online races while I was home for lunch, and ended up racing with Ace & Gary (or Clayton and Jame from Ontario) who were racing in tandem on purpose. So I didn't care if I came in first or not, I made it my mission to break up their races. That stuff drives me crazy. Sure, GP with my wife against computer AI is one thing, but I'd never play like that online in a Mario Kart game.

So if you go up against Ace & Gary, go ahead and knock them around a bit for me.

@NinSage Nifty, but is there any way to view more than just my top five friends?

Speaking of, even when I view the leaderboards within the game itself, it doesn't always show all my friends who have a record. Sometimes it'll just show 2 or 3, and then I need to click it again and it may or may not show more. Anyone else having this issue or is it just me?

@Super_Conzo Yeah, the Mario Kart Channel was pretty slick, it's a shame they took it out.

@TheOldManFromZelda I was impressed! You're certainly improving at this game.

@ludist210 Yeah, it was an odd one, I don't usually see connection issues mid-race, it's typically in between if it happens.

@Zero I'm sure someone will figure out the item formula at some point. If they can figure out charm tables in Monster Hunter, they can figure out anything! In the mean time, the only thing I could offer would be videos of my own crazy races.

@GameDadGrant The boost has been on the 2 since Mario Kart DS but I feel like the timing for it has changed a bit with each game, so knowing it in one game doesn't directly translate here.

Yeah, I was gonna say.. I don't know where this "Mario Kart DS" talk or "it's been around for the last few years" stuff is coming from, we were getting better Time Trials than "possible" by getting that launch at the start of the race in Super Mario Kart.. C'mon, guys.
06/17/14, 23:22
What they're saying is that you can max out your boost at the beginning. Depending on when you hit the gas, you'll either get a little boost or a bigger boost. I wasn't aware of this until I started doing Time Trials, and had no idea why the ghosts were getting such a better boost than I was.
06/17/14, 23:26
@PogueSquadron

It was like that on Super Mario Kart as well, wasn't it? I remember there being little boosts and normal boosts..

If it was, that's also news to me. I never knew there were multiple levels of boost at the start of races. It was either Yes or No to me. You got a boost or you did not get a boost (or you spun out, I guess).
