Welcome to the official discussion thread for The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD on the Wii U!

To start, please add this game to your log, add it to your collection (if applicable), and (when you are ready) rate it using the link above!

The game doesn't release at retail till early October, but gamers can begin playing this title soon if they buy a special edition Wii U next week. That said, Welcome to the official discussion thread for The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD! Whether you're someone who played and beat this game back in 2003, or maybe you're new and eager to get your Link wet, come here to discuss the game!

IGN.com just released their review and I believe that makes it the first review score for the title. What did they give it? You might not be surprised, but you can look at their review here. For the lazy,... 9.8/10

I have fond memories of picking the original game up from my non-standard Gamestop the night before release. They opened the doors at 10pm and let us get the game early just as the box literally arrived. I don't understand why things went down like that but I was always proud that I was nerdy enough to have been the first person to leave that Gamestop with Zelda that night. Now, I have it pre-ordered at another Gamestop, my normal one, because I want that badass statue offer. As Carlosrox continues to point out, the game looks beautiful and now that I've had an awesome Samsung HDTV for a little less than a year now, I am excited to finally embrace HD with Zelda and see how beautiful this game is at 40 inches and 1080p.

Bring it on Nintendo. I have what it takes.

@Mop it up

Yep! Another bit of streamlining.

...Man, I was a patient teen to get 100% on the GCN version, in retrospect. I just loved the heck out of it.

The Swift Sail is a really nice addition to this game. I'm having fun being much more thorough than I was when I played this way back when.

Somehow I can't convince myself it would be worth the time and effort to finish this. To my knowledge all I have is an adventure with twig-boy followed by the triforce hunt and then go fight Ganon again but still...

Although either way it's better then Skyward Sword

I seem to have made it very far without speaking to many of the mappy fish! This is not good. Now I'm staring at Triforce Chart #2 like, there's no way I'm starting to sail around looking for this almost round speck of an island! Sheesh.

Didn't realise there was one fish per square. PER SQUARE? I have maybe talked to 8 of them, total. I thought he was a hint service and I'm like, pfft save it for the noobs, mappy.

I've made a huge mistake.

@Super_Conzo

Do you at least have the Swift Sail? That should make talking to them faster? I wish I had gotten it before I filled my chart basically all the way.

@Jargon
So your advice is to talk to them all? WAHHH!
(Not gonna happen.)

Yeah, I got the swift sail reasonably early. If that item did not exist, this game would have been abandonned long ago.

Just stock up on bait and talk to them if they happen to cross your path. The few minutes that would take are far and away worth it.

Been getting back into this game lately, going to do a full Hero Mode + 3 Heart Challenge Second Playthrough this next week as well.

@Cubed777 it's still a stupid way to fill a map but tbh sailing>>>>>>>flying anyday.
09/25/14, 22:21
Both were pretty awful for different reasons. The flying was just such a chore. Just a lame version of a map selection really. And I think you had to flick to boost speed or something? Ugh. Same thing with the ocean. The warping in the game was really poorly executed. TP still had the best warping system.

@PogueSquadron

Have you played the new version? I really am finding things much better with the Swift Sail. And having all the necessary boat stuff mapped to the D Pad is nice (that wasn't in the original, right?).

I always liked this game but felt that it hadn't quite lived up to its potential. Playing it now, I still feel that way to some extent, but I'm surprised just how much I'm enjoying all the little things the game offers.

@missypissy

As long as we're posting pics:

@PogueSquadron flying took all the slow, tedium of sailing, and made it so you actually had to pay attention to what's going on.
09/26/14, 02:35
That's very true! It was a pretty terrible decision I think. Thankfully I still loved the rest of the game.

Haven't played the new version. WW has never been my favorite Zelda game but I'd be down for the game if it was given to me as a gift or something.

@Super_Conzo

I've always had lots of bait around and just talk to the fish as I go through the game.. The updated version makes it easier (he is more attracted to the bait this time around) and the swift sail is a god send. Doing it all at the end is a chore...

@Smerd

It's nice that all these charts tell you where to look for hidden stuff, but they're pretty worthless without something telling you what you've already done. Pretty big design flaw.

After much persistence, I've gotten all the treasure charts (and their respective treasures) and all the heart pieces. Feels good, since I never came close the first time I played this game. I must admit I had to resort to a guide for the law few charts and pieces, but I'm happy to report that I managed to do all the real sidequests on my own. The only thing I was missing were caves that I had missed (and would have easily found if the game would have marked off your charts as you progressed *grumble grumble*).

As for the pictographs... yea... not happening. But I made a big dent in them and had fun doing it so that's what matters. Getting them all would not be very fun I don't think, so I'm moving on. Tomorrow or so I'll beat the game. I remember the ending being awesome, so I'm looking forward to it.

@Jargon

I'm playing through this as well, and I agree about the charts showing heart pieces, caves, etc being pretty useless since they don't mark which ones you've found. They fixed so many other issues with the original GameCube version, but this one thing still bothers me. I'll probably have to resort to a guide to figure out which heart pieces and charts I'm missing.

I too was planning on getting all of the pictographs, but I now realize that I've missed a couple that apparently I can't get back, so unless I happen to find the right pictograph in one of those Tingle bottles then I'm out of luck. I guess I could start a new game after I finish it the first time around, but that ain't happening.

Game beaten! The ending was quite good, as I remembered. Puppet Ganon really is weird. I remember when I originally played I was so hyped at that moment thinking he was turning into regular Ganon only to be disappointed. I guess I appreciate it more now, as it's interesting, but there's still really no explanation.

Gotta love the final blow of the game. Loved that the first time through, and still do. I remember finding it pretty shocking in a Nintendo game.

End credit music is sublime, of course.

I must say, the more I think about it, I really think this game would have worked well and perhaps even better as a stand alone game rather than a Zelda game. I know it's a sequel to Ocarina of Time in a sense, but it doesn't really have to be to work. And Link is quite different in this game from others, the whole sea theme doesn't really fit the rest of the series, and something about the story makes me feel like it would stand really well on its own. Of course, Nintendo loves to slap their brands on everything and the whole video game world is so horny for sequels that it would never have happened. Oh well. Still a great game and this version is a definite improvement. Glad I got it for free because I probably wouldn't have bothered with it otherwise.

P.S. Tetra never learned how to wink properly.

I dunno, that game spawned multiple games in that style afterwards. I suppose it could have all been a new series, but there were some big impact moments that really depended on the Ocarina lineage to work.

Heh heh, I remember thinking the same thing when I saw it. I think it's made even moreso by the graphical style, which makes this game seem more happy-go-lucky than other Zelda titles. But I s'pose it isn't the only time a Zelda game has had a shocking moment at the end, as I wasn't expecting there to be blood at the end of OoT!
