With the release of Paper Mario on 3DS (which I'm liking so far), I think it is time to talk about the last great Mario RPG game on a handheld: Bowser's Inside Story. What did you guys think of this game? Love it? Hate it? Like it? I thought it was pretty brilliant actually, and it really felt more like a culmination of everything "Mario" than a straight RPG... lots of platforming and erm... mini-games. Switching between Bowser and the Bros. was pretty sweet too.
The second is definitely the weakest one. The third is... maybe not quite at the level of the first, but it's a very different game, and awesome in its own way. And Bowser is hilarious, this is the first time I've ever seen him as more than a sort of generic personality.
@Zero And you didn't think Bowser had more than a generic personality in that game? I thought he was pretty good there, that's probably the best representation of him that I've seen. I thought he was decent in Mario and Luigi too, though he didn't get much screen time there.
I thought that the best part about the game was the story. It reminded me of Ozzie and Drix. I thought the nadir of the whole experience was having to control Giga Bowser. With that said, I liked working in tandem with Mario and Luigi and Bower in order to solve environmental puzzles. I wasn't really a fan of the battle system, however. Battles felt like throwaways half the time since the enemies seldom put up a good fight. Nevertheless, I liked using the special attacks though, those were fun.
So I'm about 8 hours into this game. I've noticed that there are areas inside of Bowser that have opened up but that I haven't been explicitly sent to yet. Should I go and explore or should I wait until the story tells me to go to these zones?
This is one of my best loved games. I feel like they threw the kitchen sink at it. Yeah, the Giga-Bowser bits were shaky and the game was maybe 2 hours too long but the charm and the concept just blew me away. They have Bowser channelling Jimbo from the Simpsons! Come on!
The interaction between Bowser and Fawful is hilarious, leading to some of the funniest dialogue you'll ever get in a video game.
Bowser is entirely direct, in your face, heart on his sleeve, never a doubt in his or anyone else's mind as to want he wants. Fawful is... oblique, to put it mildly. The disparity in personalities is perfect.
Just beat the game. It was good, but I enjoyed Partners in Time more. The stuff like spin jumping, digging for beans, etc. is a little stale at this point. I hope Dream Team changes stuff up more. If not, I'll probably hold off on playing it for a while.
I am just about to jump into this based on Negative World recommendations. The only RPGs I have ever completed are Sticker Star and Final Fantasy X and I've played some of the greats like Dragon Quest IX and V, Final Fantasy 3, Chrono Trigger and more. I may need your support to get through this.
