The last 2D Mario we will see for a good long while. Will it live up to the hype?

@roykoopa64 Yeah the timing on that part is tough. My best advice is... just keep running to the right, don't stop. Even if you don't think you will make the jump, sometimes everything shifts back in to where you need it to be just in time. Using Mario's little spin in the air can gain you the edge at this point too.

Man, I just spent about an hour or more and 40ish lives on SR-2 getting all 3 coins. Gah!

I laughed when I saw that stage, since I already played it in NEW Super Mario Bros. 2, in the 'Nerve-Wrack-Pack.'
01/27/13, 14:33
YES. Got my 5 stars on my file select! I think they're shiny. They should be, I didn't use any Guide help in the game.

SR-2 was definitely the hardest for me, apparently. I spent the most time on that one!
Especially because I insisted on getting the three star coins without a power-up.

All the Superstar Road levels were awesome.

It's about time I jumped into the Challenges and extra stuff like that. Can't wait!

@GameDadGrant

I haven't checked out the 'non-free' DLC for NSMB 2 yet, for some reason! Is the stage really the same as SR-2 in NSMB U?

@roykoopa64 A quick check on GameFAQs seems to indicate that shiny stars do not exist this time around, so you should be good.

@roykoopa64

It's not the EXACT same stage, no. But it's the same basic concept; keep running so you can hit the P-switch before it turns off and the floor changes back to coins. The DLC stage is much more difficult than the one in NSMBU, IMO. (They probably did that so one would get more "bang for one's buck" when they downloaded the course pack.)

@GameDadGrant Did you get all 3 coins in the NSMBU one? It's pretty nuts.

BUT... to speak about truly difficult things. I was originally planning on getting at least bronze in every challenge mode thing, but some of those 5 stars... god almighty. I'm sure I could pull them off eventually, but at a certain point the whole having to be pixel perfect thing just stops being "challenging" and starts being "annoying." I think I have about 5 or 6 challenges left but I may just leave it at that.

@Zero

Yeah, I'm having a tough time with the challenges too. I can't even complete the one where you have to use baby Yoshi's bubbles to reach the top...

Have you guys been playing much of Boost Rush mode? I just did the Acrobat Pack, I'll give the Yoshi Pack a go next. It's fun to go for the best time, but without seeing your friends' times, I don't see a lot of motivation.

@roykoopa64

Oh, so Boost Rush isn't for multiple players? I should try those sometime.
02/01/13, 05:06
How is it not for multiplayer?! Doesn't it kind of have to be? I haven't even tried it because I assumed it was multi.

@ludist210 and @Zero

I was confused at first just for a small moment.

The Challenge Mode has a sub-category called 'Boost Mode' (with the other categories being Time Attack, Coin Collection, 1-Up Rally, and Special) that is only multiplayer; GamePad player places blocks in order for the other players (1 or more) to reach the goal; without the blocks there's no way to make it to the goal.

On the main menu is a separate mode called Boost Rush Mode which can be played with any number of players, including single. This mode doesn't require the 'Boost Blocks' from the GamePad user. Rather, you play through a series of levels grouped together in packs, and the objective is to play through autoscrolling levels and collect the most coins, lose the least amount of lives, and make or beat the best time. The speed of the scrolling will increase every ten Coins while Star Coins are worth 20 coins each.

@roykoopa64

If you look back through my Miiverse stream, you'll see that I've posted my best time for the Acrobat Pack. Try and beat it! Or post your own times for other Packs on Miiverse I'll do my best to beat your times!

@canonj

Sounds good, I'll check it out!

Yeah, I think comparing scores with friends is the way to go on this one (too bad there's no online leaderboards, just like NSMB2). It's not necessarily difficult to simply clear the packs, especially since you're given some lives to start off with and can gain more by collecting coins or 1-ups while pulling off the pack (and you're not thrown back to the beginning when you die).
02/01/13, 05:52
@roykoopa64 Oh yeah, I guess I have tried that a bit multi. It never occured to me to try it single.

This...is beautiful

This...is holy fuckballs

@anon_mastermind

Those are insane. Can human players actually pull that stuff off? I just can't imagine the coordination required by the two or more players in either of these videos.

Has anyone else here been watching the NSMBU videos that get pushed out by the official Nintendo youtube channel? I know they're up when I see the blue notification on the Wii U main menu. Those are some insane videos too.
02/01/13, 18:21
Those are pretty insane, but sometimes I'm getting into a nice run in some of these speed runs and I'm thinking how am *I* even doing this? But I really think that is more a testament to the design than to my own skills. Nintendo knows how to place everything just right so you can cruise through it feeling like a platforming god.

Yup! Got all Star Coins in the entirety of NEW Super Mario Bros. U! I actually didn't find it all that challenging, honestly. I was kind of disappointed at how easy this game was. I've said it before, but I can't shake the feeling that this game was really rushed to completion and proper time wasn't put into the level design. It's a big step down from previous efforts, IMO.
02/01/13, 23:17
@GameDadGrant I honestly can't tell when you are serious or just sort of trolling consoles unless those are the same thing. I'm not sure that many people would argue that NSMB U was less polished than NSMB 2 / Wii (and they're pretty much all easily more polished than the DS one), and on the difficulty side of things there really wasn't much in the core game of 2 / Wii / DS that can compare to SR-2. That's not even counting challenge mode, which contains what are easily some of the most challenging things in any Mario game ever. And that entire mode is super polished too.

Oh yeah, Challenge Mode is good! I like that mode. That "Mini-Mountain Climber" challenge is an enraging fun time. Don't tell Nintendo this, but if they just packed up a new Mario game that was just "Challenge Mode" I'd probably buy it. It'd be a good eShop game, if not a retail one.

But the overall game itself was basically more of the same, which was kind of disappointing considering how much praise everyone seemed to be giving it. - ("true follow-up to Super Mario World" and all that). I think many players were just really excited about the seamless map screen and their enthusiasm carried over to the stages, which were honestly nothing special. I mean, good, polished, Mario-stages, but that's par for the course for this (sub) series.

Just to be clear, I'm not comparing this game to the 3DS game, or consoles to handhelds for that matter. I know I've got a reputation for being a little *too* into handhelds, but my post above didn't mention systems at all; I'm just taking games. And even though this game was kind of disappointing to me overall, I still rank it far higher than most other 2D platformers I've played. (I like it more than Rayman Origins, in fact - which I've only played on 3DS) I just have really high expectations and standards for Mario games.

I definitely agree with these paragraphs in particular, but I don't feel that NSMBU is really a "step down" from the rest of the subseries. They all feel a little tepid to me, albeit still fun and enjoyable.
