Pikmin 3 Review (Nintendo Wii U) (9.8)  by

Just thought this title needed an official thread.

Yesterday, while browsing the interwebs at work, I found a hands-on of the game that mentioned something that I had not heard of anywhere else. Unfortunately, I don't remember where it was, but here's the gist...

Pikmin 3 now has an evade move! From Nintendojo "Handy, then, that our new lead character has a nifty dodge ability that sees both him and his band of Pikmin roll to the side in perfect unison whenever danger’s about to rear its ugly head. It took a while to master, especially since there seems to be a small amount of recovery time before you can initiate another one, but it brought a welcome sense of drama to the fights, as well as a greater feeling of control over your large army."

Let's give this launch window game some love! ERRR..... Releases August 4th!

Well, I tried to post the trailer. Thanks Renjaku!

Now lets take a look at Gamexplain of the newest video

Yeah, count me as someone who tried to do it all in one day too. What an excercise in frustration. Many resets were had.

Stupid blob.

@kriswright

My opinion is very similar to yours on DKTF, Pikmin 3, and SM3DW. *throws confetti*

@Mr_Mustache I tried the demo, it felt really solid and lovely but I have a weird thing where I don't buy or play much survival horror. I tend to rush through them and I think they stress me out too much? Maybe when it's on sale again...

@Marsh

I talked to my buddy the other day about the Zombi U demo...and I CAN NOT believe what they have you doing. (For you guys that don't know, apparently the Demo takes place in the Nursery.) I thought they'd go a completely different direction with it.

But yeah, the game is pretty tense, haha. I don't think Zombi U is a game that you'll want to rush through though; you'll probably play more like me and take little baby steps. On top of being scared, I didn't want to miss anything. If you can snake it on a sale, go for it. If you liked what you played.

(I don't really do much Survival Horror either. I think I only own Resident Evil 4, actually.)

Interesting that you don't find Cat Mario to be "Marioish". For me, there's no real difference between that and Raccoon Mario, except one obviously being more iconic. How do you feel about Bee Mario?
04/16/14, 03:26
@Jargon

I don't want to clog up the Pikmin 3 thread with a finger-pointing debate about whether I'm a hypocrite for liking Bee Mario and not liking Cat Mario.

I like Bee Mario because it's clumsy, silly and only appears on a handful of levels. I like the more controversial Spring Mario for the exact same reasons. I don't really like Cat Mario because it just about turns Mario into a beat 'em up and, unlike Bee Mario, you can use the costume in damn near every level. In fact, dozens of levels are built around it.

But this isn't really a philosophical debate. I dislike it because it never felt "right" to me - an opinion I'm entitled to. Simple as that.

And that's the extent to which I'm interested in talking about it in this thread.

Is everything alright man? I just don't know how you could read what I wrote and act like it was some kind of insult. I'm honestly perplexed. Finger pointing? Hypocrite? Philosophical debate? What in the world...

@Jargon I didn't take it that way, I think he was using the word lightly. But I could be wrong.

I agree with the Cat Mario being a bit overpowered, but it fits in the game because a lot of the levels were designed with the powerup in mind. It makes traversing the somewhat larger areas more fun too because of the Cat Suit's superior speed. And it makes completing certain areas so much more fun because you can do it however you feel, given the circumstances.

I think I can see where the game lacks the usual magic and charm, some bits seemed phoned in and not as original as others. I enjoyed playing with my sister, however we got into some intense arguments on some of the levels. Usually it was the ones that just aren't suited for more than one player (the dash pads in the lava level for example).

@Mr_Mustache I own Resident Evil 4 and that's about it. Oh and Eternal Darkness, haha. I tried Dead Space on PS3 and couldn't get through the demo. I wish I wasn't such a pansy. The genre still intrigues me though, feeling that sort of fear is a rare and exhilarating experience for me.

@Jargon

Yeah, sorry. I didn't mean for that to come off as touchy as it did. Now that I look at it again, I see what you mean. What I was thinking - at the end of a long, long day of work and birthing class - was, "Eh, me and Jargon are about to start a three page long debate about 3D World and what constitutes a True Mario Experience in the Pikmin 3 thread. Better cut that off at the pass. How can I say my piece in as short a reply as possible." So that was my project with that post. But you know how it is where you type something and you think the tone is right and then you look at it again the next day and realize it sounds a lot different than you intended. This was one of those times. I didn't mean "finger-pointing" as an accusation, for instance. I meant, "let's not let this get out of hand and turn into finger-pointing". I used the word hypocrite, but I really didn't mean it in such operatic terms as that. I mean, it's Mario we're talking about here, not politics or morality. The rest, which I agree sounds curt, was really just me trying to compress my feelings into as small of an explanation as possible.

So, it was just a failure of writing. Seriously, sorry for that. Sometimes I think I should start using emoticons again. I didn't used to have this problem. :)

@kriswright

It's cool, sir. I was honestly just curious about whether Bee Mario felt more in line with previous power-ups to you and I even reread my post to make sure it wasn't misconstrued so I was pretty taken aback. Thanks for clarifying.

Steph and I have been working to get Platinums on the Collect Treasure mission levels and... it's almost more fun than the actual game! The partner-based problem solving, divvying up the workload, the mad scramble, the improvisation... this is so much fun, man. She and I have both been talking about Pikmin all week. You know, we play a lot of Nintendo games together but only DKCRTF has had that kind of effect on us in the last, oh, couple of years. We're constantly saying to each other "One more try" and loving every minute of it.

Seriously, this game is a masterpiece.

This would easily have been my Game of the Year for last year.

@kriswright

Yeah, Mission Mode (Treasure especially) is super addictive, and possibly my favorite part of the game. It's really fun to try out new things each time around and improve your gameplay enough to snag that elusive Platinum. Have you gotten the DLC?
04/19/14, 05:57
@TriforceBun

Had to! Platinumized all the included options and, like a dope fiend, had to have more!

That Christmas level sure is crazy, isn't it?
04/19/14, 05:59
Yeah, took me a good while to nail that one down. And I definitely couldn't resist nabbing up all the DLC either.

I think I have about 2 platinums left to get in each mode now--treasure, enemy, and boss. I held off on enemy for awhile but it's actually quite fun. I'm not really crazy about boss mode, though--it doesn't quite lend itself as well to speed runs as the others, IMO. But it is very cool to have the option to refight bosses either way.
04/19/14, 06:21
I'm so glad people are discovering the fun of the missions, especially co-op. Karen and I had a blast platinuming everything save one or two maps we didn't care for.
04/19/14, 20:46
@Guillaume

It is an excellent "play with a gal" sorta game.
04/19/14, 21:08
Someone send me a girl so I can get platinums.

*sigh*
04/20/14, 03:12
I have a girl, she just isn't much of a Pikmin fan.
04/20/14, 17:52
@Zero

You let your woman have her own preferences in life? Bad form. You're going to ruin this good thing we got going.
04/20/14, 17:56
Ha ha well... she's kind of a non-gamer so I think trying to force stuff on her wouldn't go over very well. I just kind of show her a variety of stuff and anything she shows some interest in we play for a bit. Sometimes she legitimately likes something and we play it more than a bit.

What I've learned is that she basically doesn't get into much of anything that requires her to spend time learning complicated (for a non-gamer) controls. Or much of anything in 3D. So Pikmin already has two strikes against it.

I don't recall if she actually played it herself though. I think she might have just been watching me play and when I offered her a turn she was like nope, looks way too confusing.

Hmm, this makes her sound like... slow or unintelligent or something, but that isn't the case. It's just a matter of motivation. She doesn't really see the point of spending time learning how to play some games when she can jump right into other games.
