Pikmin 3 Review (Nintendo Wii U) (9.8)  by

Just thought this title needed an official thread.

Yesterday, while browsing the interwebs at work, I found a hands-on of the game that mentioned something that I had not heard of anywhere else. Unfortunately, I don't remember where it was, but here's the gist...

Pikmin 3 now has an evade move! From Nintendojo "Handy, then, that our new lead character has a nifty dodge ability that sees both him and his band of Pikmin roll to the side in perfect unison whenever danger’s about to rear its ugly head. It took a while to master, especially since there seems to be a small amount of recovery time before you can initiate another one, but it brought a welcome sense of drama to the fights, as well as a greater feeling of control over your large army."

Let's give this launch window game some love! ERRR..... Releases August 4th!

Well, I tried to post the trailer. Thanks Renjaku!

Now lets take a look at Gamexplain of the newest video

I felt that the game made it pretty clear leading up to the ending that it was about to be over, but I do think that the ending itself was a bit underwhelming.

Well I thought that once we found Olimar there would be more to it. I mean, the plot of the game turns out to be... Three people crash on a planet. They find two other travellers who happen to have the pieces they need to leave.

The End.

I figured that once we met with Olimar there would be one final area where whatever came about finding him had some relevancy.

I felt totally griefed that the final level wasn't a true fruit collecting level. 'This is going to be a gimmicky final boss level isn't it? Oh my god it fucking is.'

I thought that last part was fun, if not a little frustrating but I figured out a great tactic to keep things moving. Still I too wished that the last level was a fruit-collect-a-thon with final environmental puzzles.

@DrFinkelstein
Was that tactic use the 'go here' command and have the captain with Olimar walk in a big circle?

Thanks everyone on this page for the spoilers tags. Legit!

I really gotta finish this, ideally before Wonderful 101. You know, since they're exactly the same game.

I too was let down by the final area. Ah wail. DLC?

I finally made it to that point of "Okay, just one more day and then I'll quit. I mean it this time."

And that's when the real fun begins.

@-JKR-
It's definitely compulsive. I find myself thinking - I'll just explore a little to make my next play session more streamlined, and then the end of the day message comes and I'm like, Oh crap.

@Renjaku

That's the one! At first I was doing it manually, then I realized, what a minute...

Ooh, I wish I had thought of that!

Aww! Why didn't I notice that? :'( Oh, well, that's what second play throughs are for.

I guess I'm the odd one out in that I had no problem with the final area. It was kind of like the ending of Pikmin 1, where the final area was basically just a couple puzzles and the boss with the final ship part. I went in expecting to use all my pikmin types to solve puzzles to get to the boss, and to get one single item in the area, and that's exactly what happened. If anything, it was much larger and more epic than expected.

@Hero_Of_Hyrule

Brilliant! There's no water early on though right? I guess that's when I found my method and stuck with it, despite usually using Flying Pikmin to hold Olimar.

I haven't posted in this thread, but just wanted to say this game is quite awesome.

Day 15 is over. Hm, I seem pretty bad at this. The days run out so quickly and it seems I barely get anything done!

After reuniting the three crew members, I fought and defeated the boss that you fight in the sand (see Miiverse post), that was crazy. He would just sink the sand and create a funnel down to his open mouth, devouring those poor Pikmin!

I have 19 fruits so far.

Nice, I have a new area to explore: Twilight River.

Oh, and I posted on Miiverse that I had a lot of fun playing Bingo Battle with my cousin Saturday night. We played each level at least once.

Initially I was playing this game with the Wii remote and nunchuk, but that doesn't work so well when I'm having to resort to the GamePad quite often. So I made the switch to GamePad-only and I'm used to it now. GamePad stuff is great!

@roykoopa64

I'm going to be able to start trying Bingo Battle tomorrow night. Can't wait!

There are so many games I want to get when a.) I can find them on sale and b.) I move out. It's like I'm saving so many to play in my new living room haha. Can't wait. This will be my first Pikmin game.

The plus side of Nintendo's lack of serious voice acting in a lot of its games is that I can sit in the same room as my brother while he plays this game and not feel like anything is being spoiled as long as I don't look over at the TV. Except for the music and pikmin noises, I guess.

I love this game. I've been making some good progress in story mode, having just captured that elusive character Louie once again (and this time making sure he doesn't run away!). The thief. I suppose I'll find out soon enough why he was acting like that.

If you've seen my posts on Miiverse, I've been super impressed with the creature design and especially with the boss battles. So epic, and very deadly if you're not careful! I prefer taking on a boss at the start of a new day, and restarting the day if I screw up immensely (like if half my Pikmin army gets wiped out). Don't click the following Miiverse links if you haven't played the game much, but just wow at this guy (using the environment as part of the battle), this scary sand creature, aerial battle of a boss, and the mud beast! I think you have to be logged in to Miiverse to see these.

I'm starting to get the hang of using my three main characters more effectively in terms of splitting up tasks and getting more done each day! It's always tricky though, especially some times when I let Pikmin are carrying stuff back to the onion and they run into enemies I wasn't aware of! Groan. That's why sometimes I let one of the main characters escort them back using the 'Go here' function on the GamePad (I love that feature so much).

I got my Blue Pikmin now, which means I finally have all five types!

Oh, and this view while underwater is so nice:

I love the scenery in that level.

It just hit me that--like in Pikmin 2--we get one environment based on each season in the game.

I especially like the game's fifth boss; it's a spectacular battle and perhaps the most visually impressive sequence in a game full of 'em. Definitely my favorite Pikmin fight!

I love how dynamic the difficulty is in this game. If you really want to, you can really push the multitasking and attempt some crazy things.
