Pikmin 3 Review (Nintendo Wii U) (9.8)  by

Just thought this title needed an official thread.

Yesterday, while browsing the interwebs at work, I found a hands-on of the game that mentioned something that I had not heard of anywhere else. Unfortunately, I don't remember where it was, but here's the gist...

Pikmin 3 now has an evade move! From Nintendojo "Handy, then, that our new lead character has a nifty dodge ability that sees both him and his band of Pikmin roll to the side in perfect unison whenever danger’s about to rear its ugly head. It took a while to master, especially since there seems to be a small amount of recovery time before you can initiate another one, but it brought a welcome sense of drama to the fights, as well as a greater feeling of control over your large army."

Let's give this launch window game some love! ERRR..... Releases August 4th!

Well, I tried to post the trailer. Thanks Renjaku!

Now lets take a look at Gamexplain of the newest video

@achhibbar

Yeah and with the day amounts there's really no set forced time on you so you can bust your butt or take it slow. Good design IMO.

Yeah, great design. Makes you wonder what speedrunners will achieve - the potential for it is frightening.

Sometimes I just like to take a day off and wonder around planning and taking pictures. Love this game.

There's already videos of people beating the game in 7 days. And beating the game with all fruits collected in 10 days. I don't see where anyone has submitted a run to Speed Demos Archive yet, though. I'm looking forward to it!

Will take a look once I finish the game.

Just beat the game. I'm definitely happy with the main campaign. Took me close to 10 hours and I've only gotten 66% of the fruit (definitely going back for all of it). Was a cool story and I like how they handled the time limit.

I am a little disappointed with the other modes. Considering just how long it took to get this game, I think we should have gotten more challenge levels and more meaty multiplayer. Would have been nice to have co-op in the main campaign, for example. And online of course but that's a dead horse at this point.

I'd be happy to see some DLC if it was as good, substantial and reasonably priced as New Super Luigi U.

I have one area left to get all the fruit, and then I'll head to the last (I assume) spot that just unlocked to find... that guy.

Finished collecting all the fruit. I'm still missing some secret files (not to mention normal files) but I'm not feeling too compelled to look for those.

@Hero_Of_Hyrule

The problem is searching for those isn't an extension of the normal gameplay. I probably wouldn't even need Pikmin for them. I'd be much more interested if it involved big optional battles or something else thar used my Pikmin skills.

This game is sooo good.

The next Metroid should take some inspiration from how this game is designed. A main mission structure, but a wealth of other things to explore how and when you see fit. It really plays how you want it too.

Toki Tori 2 is also amazing in this respect. It goes even further by placing no real barriers to your progress in the world like requiring powerups to get through a door. It's up to you to figure how to use your powers that you have from the very beginning to make progress. Again, the next Metroid should have elements of this too.

I finally found Olimar and promptly had all my juice stolen by him! What a dick! At least I finally have the Blue Pikmin, and am probably on my way to the end game. Good fun so far!

@TheOldManFromZelda

You've never played Pikmin 2, have you?

@Guillaume

I did, and hated it. Hated the first one, too. Third time's the charm!

The Pikmin 3 DLC is already out! I haven't gotten around to it yet because I was busy playing the new free Challenge Mode stage! One small disappointment is that it's a remix of the first Challenge stage, but it's still quite fun.

@Secret_Tunnel

Haha, nice.

Got the DLC last night before even playing the ODC. I'm sure the Challenge modes are fun though. Perhaps Friday!

@Mr_Mustache

Play them! I enjoy them as much as the main game. I'm thrilled to be able to dive into some new challenges later tonight!

Here's where the digitalness of DLC hurts. I really like playing the challenge missions with my niece, but I wouldn't be able to bring them over to play on her Wii U.

@TriforceBun

I still wanna finish the main game! Challenges and stuff is like dessert!

Finally beat the story mode last night, and gathered 59/65 fruits. Not bad, and I don't really feel a desire to get the rest.

Very strange final stage/boss. The whole running away from the blob was quite the excercise in multi-tasking. Took a couple of days and many Pikmin to finally get a good strategy down. Once I did though, it was smooth sailing to the boss fight, which, was kind of a let down and pretty easy. It felt a little disjointed. Like, where did the being come from? Why did it want Olimar? Was it even interested in the fruits? I demand answers! I suppose if they make Pikmin 4, they would have to explore on that rather than leave it hanging. It would definitely make me play the next game! Overall, I enjoyed my experience. This is the first Pikmin game that I finished. I may try the challenges, and I definitely want to play some more Bingo Battle! I'm going to score the game an 8.5. I feel it was the right length, but the weird ending kind threw me off. Graphics were gorgeous. Controls were tight. Fun battle mode.

I finally platinumed the first DLC stage. While I felt a sense of accomplishment, the dozens of attempts required, and the terribly low score, only highlight how mediocre I am at this stuff. Oh well, it was fun anyway!
