So that's where Fabz gets his endless supply of bombs...

There's poop shot, but no Sonic shot. And I'm so cheap that I use only basic ammo, anyway. You'll have to pry my Lvl 3 Crags from my cold, dead hands.

I'm sure Sonic Bombs are easier when you can just chuck items at any time, Mustache.

@-JKR-
You've gotta give it a bit of time. There's a learning curve, but the single-player is nice and gradual.

Ok Questions:

1st: How do I aquire the Bombardier Skill? I love blowing things up..

2nd: I have created 'jewels' but I can't seem to equip them (for instance, one that helps protect me from hot or cold elements) These are NOT the ones that you need a slot for whatever weapon (I've done that) but I can't seem to figure out how to actually fill the last gap on your equipment screen... ... and I'm too lazy to look at the manual..for now.

3rd: Can someone please explain to me how the sharpness meter works. I can understand the colours but some weapons can have the same 'length' of sharpness but one weapon may have more red (1st colour) then the other one. This all obviously means that some weapons dull faster then others but I was hoping for a deeper explaination.

@Marsh

why? how so??? :P

oh and smerd you can find the bombarderi charm but it's hard to come by. the easiest way is to get the uragaan armor
09/24/10, 01:01
sharpeness of a weapon defines it's attack. yellow neing low, then white, then blue, then pink.

as you play, you'll find weapons that have more "resistance" and don't get dull as often

for now use what you got. focus on the weapon's element and attack before anything else and learn every monster's elemental weakness and learn to change weapons before fights. you'll get back to sharpness and affinity later on when you're hr 31+ and will access better weapons.

@anandxxx

HEY! I run around CONSTANTLY, often with my weapon sheathed. That leaves me open to ALL attacks. Its a risk you take!

@Smerd

Are you talking about the deals that the Blacksmith forges for you? Decorations? Those do use slots and go on your weapons and armor. Or are you talking about a Charm? You can equip one Charm along with your Weapon and Armor pieces. Think of it like an "Accessory" that you'd find in other games.

Fabz is right (Chack agrees, too); elemental focus on weapons will get you where you need to be. I don't know if you remembered when we played, but I often found out the Quest, and then went to change out my weapons. "Every great hunt deserves a great weapon." I think thats what the box says?

I don't know how much weaponry you've made, but I can tell you something I remember from long ago. The Bone stuff you can make does more damage, but dulls INCREDIBLY fast compared to the metal weapons you have early. Its a tough call. Do you want durability or attack power? Keep in mind that when you need to stop and use a Whetstone, you're spread eagle open to damage.

Smerd, jewels work only to "help" an equipped charm reach the value of 10 so that the skill becomes active.

I'll explain this once i get home
09/24/10, 02:59
Anyone going online at around 9:30EST?
09/24/10, 04:17
@Smerd

I hope to be on about an hour after that. Tough call at work right now though..

I'll let you guys know when I'm out. Tack on 20 and I'll be home then.
09/24/10, 04:29
@Mr_Mustache

will have to make it another night.... I have an early start tomorrow morning... blah. And yeah..I was talking about the Charms... I'm confused as to what they are for.... and yeah....for some reason I couldn't equip them..

Yayyyyy! Four-Star!! That was epic.

Not the Urgent, but running into a Deviljho immediately afterwards. Omigod, I was shitting my pants. He fucking one-shotted me at full health (+40). And I'd suspected he could, just by looking at him. What a beast.

Man, this game has a ton of content.

@Mr_Mustache
Yeah, but you don't have shitty gunner armor!

@Smerd
You can only equip one charm at a time.

I should be able to play tonight, down to hit up some 2/3 star quests...I'm on my way to HR 31!
09/24/10, 19:43
So should I start with single player? Is that the best way to do this?

Help a newbie figure out the best method here.
09/24/10, 20:34
Don't worry... a lot of us are still Newbies...

It's a large game - almost overwelming at first.

Do the one player for awhile.. It takes a couple of hours to get through the basic missions - then they let you do whatever you want pretty much - that's half the fun.

Once you pass the initial 'orientation', do a couple of 1 star missions and you're on your way. A good thing about this game is that you can leave it for long periods of time (like I did) and come back to playing this game with no issues. You dont' have to remember too much stuff, instructions are also in game for a lot of things, and the quests are broken down nicely.

Basic Story: Hunt and Hunt some more. The more you hunt, the bigger the monster - and you work towards your final goal - the monster on the cover of the game.

@anandxxx

But that's the problem... I can't equip it - the slot is empty!

I do have a charm/whatever in the hammer I'm using.. but the Accessory part of my equipment remains empty - does that still mean It's one or the other?

I'm having a problem even finding it in the equipment screen. I see it in my item box/pouch instead. - I just don't know how to make use of it.

I would suggest finishing off all the one-star quests, establish a farm, fishing fleet, hunt enough monsters to make yourself a decent armor and weapon, then hop online just to get a taste. That's what I did, and from 90/10 solo/online gradually increased the amount of time I play online. I still haven't "finished" the single player, and I'm now 20/80. The online is just so damn fun, especially with the NW crew. What's cool is you can still make progress in terms of equipment sets, etc, while playing online, and best of all your character carries over seamlessly from single to multi.
09/24/10, 20:54
@-JKR-
Yeah, single-player will keep you from getting overwhelmed, and it defeats the purpose of the game to go online and have a bunch of high-powered allies escort you through the missions.

Start with single-player. Maybe go through one- and some two-star before going online. Playing with superheroes really will distort your appreciation of the game.

@Smerd
Okay, this seems to be a vocabulary thing. I don't remember all the terms, but I'll try to explain. There are Decorations, which are what you slot in weapons/armor/(some other stuff). Those, you can Forge, Attach, and Remove at the Weapon Shop. Then there are Gems or Talismans (Talismen?), which look like jewels, and have a chess-like designation of power (pawn talisman, knight talisman, etc.). You can only equip ONE of those from your Manage Equipment screen, where you change weapons/armor. You can also sometimes slot Decorations into them. Those will also show up on your Equipment screen.

Finally, there are Charms, like Armorcharm and Powercharm. Those are the only two I know of, they also look like jewels, and you can carry them in your Item Pouch for a stat boost. As far as I know, carrying a Talisman in your Item Pouch will not have any effect.

(You can also bring drugs to juice up during missions (Demondrug, Armorskin, Might Pill, Adamant Pill.) Those give you temporary buffs.

And you can eat before each mission to get Skills (Felyne Courage, Felyne Medic), which also give you temporary buffs for the following mission.)

Sounds good. I'll stick to single player for a bit and see how it goes. If it doesn't go well, I'll jump online just to experience it, but if I get addicted as I expect then I'll try to finish a bit before joining up with you folks through the magic of the internets.
09/24/10, 23:04
@-JKR-

Yeah man, do all you can in Single Player. The enemies are "weaker," everything is explained to you by the game (the Tutorial is like 10-15 hours, it seems), and you have a better focus on trying out what works for you weaponwise, and experiment with some armor combinations and what not. The game is as deep as you make it. Don't rush yourself online; you'll come away feeling overpowered and depressed. I can't say for sure, but I feel that Zero may've taken his show online before he was truly ready to. He claims he still has no idea whats going on at HR17, and doesn't like to play offline at all. Thats 100% his decision, and whatever comes with it is what comes with it. ---Think of offline/singleplayer as High School and College Football, and online as the Big Leagues. No one walks onto an NFL team out of 8th grade. Knowing what you're doing will go a long way for your sanity as well.

I was 90/10 back then myself. And I went about 53 hours or so without fainting. Beat my record!
(Now I faint all the time, haha!! ... *sigh*)

@anandxxx, @Smerd

Anand explained it REALLY well. Those are all of the proper terms. Decorations are forgeable and go on your weapons in slots, Talismans are worn with your armor via the Equip screen. You find those or are given them.

@anon_mastermind

Big Mike! Anyone else on tonight? I'll try to help you out, brother! What is your HR now? Not sure what time I'll be on..

EDIT- HR Updates! 49 for me, 31 for Anand, 95 for Fabz, 20 for Bolt
