Super Mario Maker on the Wii U

Welcome to the official discussion thread for Super Mario Maker on the Wii U!

To start, please add this game to your log, add it to your collection (if applicable), and (when you are ready) rate it using the link above!

Super Mario Maker is a new title from Nintendo where, for the first time ever, you will be able to create your own levels on your own console. The game released on September 11th, 2015.

Through Nintendo Directs, Nintendo Treehouse videos, and the Super Mario Maker website, there's quite a bit of information out now which is really showcasing how deep the creation tools are.

Four Main Themes To Choose From!
Super Mario Bros., Super Mario Bros. 3, Super Mario World, New Super Mario Bros. U

What's really incredible is the slew of classic objects found inside. When an item wasn't part of a previous or later game theme, Nintendo has taken the time to make new sprites to allow you to always be able to switch on the fly from theme to theme. Some classic objects include, Goombas, Monty Moles, Invisible Blocks, Flagpoles, and so much more!

The man who was alongside Miyamoto all these years with the Super Mario series, Takashi Tezuka, is the producer of this game. Koji Kondo, acclaimed Nintendo-music composer, is again the lead composer of this game. I can't imagine we'll see much, if any, new music but it's great that any new renditions of classic themes will be handled by the father of it all.

I am looking to collect data on Negative World's levels we create so if you post a level in the thread, I would sincerely and greatly appreciate if you filled out this brief survey about it so the submissions will be collected and we can ensure that your levels are played for a long time to come as part of the Negative World collection. To view the levels, simply click on the link above the survey.

Found it. Was hard keeping up with that sucker.

Man, the last course I submitted is super damn easy and it still has a 0% clear rate! Okay, this one's not me. These people are just really bad at Mario. Haha.

@Hinph

I'm still working through everyone's stages but man… I had a lot of fun with your Set Up Us the Bomb. It was very inventive and the concepts continued to grow on themselves. Well done. Very well done.

@DrFinkelstein

Thank you, sir. I'm actually really proud of that one, but it's looking to be really unpopular with a completion rate of 2% and not a single star from a stranger. I guess I can't blame people for rage quitting when they don't want to do stuff over.

Checkpoints, Nintendo. Checkpoints!

I have a dumb question, guys. How the hell do you reply to people's comments on Miiverse? Is there a secret button? Do you have to put in the Konami code?

@DrFinkelstein

I will post the last two levels I made on your form (for a total of 3) when I can. - It's the least I can do and it will be easier when the lenghth of this thread becomes ridiculous. I'll be doing both as you said - mentioning the title here..and posting details on the form.

@Hinph

Oh well at least someone did it. It was a bit disheartening having a few comments from friends saying they beat it but mention nothing of that secret. I had to build the level backwards to figure out the path so technically the entire level was built around that one secret... which people ignore

@Hinph

Yes that level was a bit of a challenge - especially the first part but fun. I had the wife cheering me on.

EDIT for everyone: I was playing the 100 man normal challenge and an error popped up after I finished the second level - if you just passed a tough one, I advise you to save and quit and then come back because if you are near the end and the server crashes, you are out of luck. The server is bound to be busy for the first two weeks and again around Christmas time..

@VofEscaflowne
I'm pretty sure I know what to do for your secret, but the Koopa shell keeps getting stuck in the area where the smaller Koopa Troopas are popping out of green pipes. It won't jump off the three springboards there. Instead, it gets stuck in front of them, sliding back and forth in the small gap, forever. I tried four or five times. Am I missing something?

@Hinph
It's just a basic reply chain. I think all you can do is click "comment."

@ploot

Gotta keep up! If it gets too far ahead, it gets stuck on the springs. It's a bit of a challenge until you know the whole path.

@Smerd

Glad you liked it! It's great that we can at least play each other's levels when the masses give up on them when they die twice.

Edit:
@ploot

Oh! NM. I thought there were sub-replies to individual comments going on like Facebook or something. Got it...

@VofEscaflowne

I don't think I've played it yet so I will look for your secret. Which one of yours is it in? I don't have the list in front of me.

First stage made. Took me way too long. I actually just got sick of tweaking it and tweaking it and just threw it up as-is. So yeah, I have a newfound respect for level designers, haha.

You're Mario and you've gotta make it out of the great Pharoah Menkaure's pyramid alive. Lots of ways to escape, but lots of gold to pillage, too. Will you be able to plunder the riches of the great pharaoh? Or will you fall victim of one of his many traps?

Me? I'm betting on the traps.

@ploot

Yeah what Hinph said. The level design is a bit tricky because the green shell travels faster than Mario's running speed so I had to try and have ways to slow down its speed towards the goal. I think that one section is the toughest because if it's too far ahead, it doesn't trigger the spring jump and gets stuck instead. But yeah, once you know its path (and you can always go back and get another shell at the flag pole since I had them respawn), it's easy enough to immediately follow through once it hits the path with the Koopa pipes.

Is one of you guys Peter? Just played through all my courses and gave feedback? I appreciate it if so but feel like a jerk for not knowing your username if you're on here!

Maaaaan, the fact that giving a red Cheap Cheap a mushroom doesn't turn it into a Boss Bass (big hungry fishy) is a huge fail for Nintendo. A horrifying, autoscrolling fish chase level would be fun to design.

Guys… especially the artistic ones! Go play this stage! It's fantastic. No enemies but a bunch of places for art via comments. It's an art gallery! Go make it your own! Cool idea. It'd be even neater with a few enemies!

My first stage got played about 40 times! Awesome! And I didn't make it on my damn Wii U either!! Neither was my second! Second much better than the first I think.

K I will actually play all your stages today cuz I'm inviting a friend over (who's QUITE into game and level design and all that) to play the shit out this game.

First (collab with bro) 09c4 0000 0026 87bf
Second (95% my level) 4465 0000 0032 52d4

What's cool is I designed this level entirely with Mario 1, but quickly switched it to Mario 3 when I unlocked it (and added all the donut blocks there).

Everyone enter that 4 digit code to see Kojo Kondo playing some of the music? You input it in the game's manual (which is super slick I must say).

I really like playing with spacing and forcing the player to deal with certain situations. Almost like telegraphing. I can't stand those stages I've tried that are too hard, randomly placed shit, or all these blinds spots. Clarity is a must for me.
