Welcome to the official discussion thread for Super Mario Maker on the Wii U!

To start, please add this game to your log, add it to your collection (if applicable), and (when you are ready) rate it using the link above!

Super Mario Maker is a new title from Nintendo where, for the first time ever, you will be able to create your own levels on your own console. The game released on September 11th, 2015.

Through Nintendo Directs, Nintendo Treehouse videos, and the Super Mario Maker website, there's quite a bit of information out now which is really showcasing how deep the creation tools are.

Four Main Themes To Choose From!
Super Mario Bros., Super Mario Bros. 3, Super Mario World, New Super Mario Bros. U

What's really incredible is the slew of classic objects found inside. When an item wasn't part of a previous or later game theme, Nintendo has taken the time to make new sprites to allow you to always be able to switch on the fly from theme to theme. Some classic objects include, Goombas, Monty Moles, Invisible Blocks, Flagpoles, and so much more!

The man who was alongside Miyamoto all these years with the Super Mario series, Takashi Tezuka, is the producer of this game. Koji Kondo, acclaimed Nintendo-music composer, is again the lead composer of this game. I can't imagine we'll see much, if any, new music but it's great that any new renditions of classic themes will be handled by the father of it all.

I am looking to collect data on Negative World's levels we create so if you post a level in the thread, I would sincerely and greatly appreciate if you filled out this brief survey about it so the submissions will be collected and we can ensure that your levels are played for a long time to come as part of the Negative World collection. To view the levels, simply click on the link above the survey.

@Mr_Mustache
I enjoy playing stages that are fun. Stages that are punishing aren't generally my bag.
I would've quit and moved on.

@Hinph
They're not amazing by any means but I'm having fun making them.

@Scrawnton
Oh, I'll check it out when I'm done this 10 Mario run!

I shouldn't have opened up this thread! My copy from Amazon.ca hasn't arrived yet, and probably won't till next week!

Thank you so much to everyone who is submitting their levels into the form I put in the OP. I am gather a lot of data and already this list will be large… I can tell… and so this might be a good plan. I'll be playing through people's levels now and finessing the sheet for everyone's view soon.

I just got done making my own first true stage. I did do a basic one in the tutorial but this one is my first brand new creation. It certainly was an interesting process and I ran out of enemies to use… lol oops.

I decided to stop trying to go for the fire flowers and attempted the whole thing with Marth. The small stature of the amiibo characters helps here!

@Beardednerd
So goooooood.

We can't just browse uploads from our friends? :(

Simple, easy, fun. My first level.

@PogueSquadron

You can follow creators but I'm not sure if you can see their levels easily. Haven't messed around with it too much yet. There really should've been a list that's your current friends list who of course own the game.

@DrFinkelstein
HAHA! I loved it. I was able to make it all the way through as the SUPER SPY Goomba, well, until the VERY end.

@PogueSquadron

That is something they really have to add. I think they will! Surprised it was overlooked, really.

@ploot

Yeah, they really are fun to make. I feel so much satisfaction when I get to the "final touch" stage.

My conditions for giving people stars are so simple. Was real effort put into it? Is it at least a little fun? Star!

Okay, so I made another level that is more of a puzzle. Have to get to thinking in order to beat this one. Let me know what you all think.

@ploot

Thanks Paul! I had a blast making it and I'm glad you enjoyed your play-through. Maybe I should refine it once I am allowed to use sound effects. Glad you were able to stay in spy mode!

I'll post this in the OP but I have the link now to where all this data is getting dumped to.

I have special filters you and easily apply by going to Data > Filter Views. You can select any of the Game Themes instantly (in-case you're eager for playing some from a special type) and I have one to show all the For Glory levels since some folks might be up for a challenge. You can also filter on your own any of the columns to your liking I believe… I don't know if that'll affect it for anyone else, unlike the Filter Views which are specific to your viewing at any time. This is a View only spreadsheet so perhaps it won't let you. If there are other filters you'd like to see, let me know! Also, let me know how the spreadsheet looks and/or works for you!

@Scrawnton

When you get a chance, be sure to add yours!

So you know how Nintendo in the past would say that their consoles are designed around game ideas and they build a console to fit particular games. It is funny because this game it seems like the Wii U was made for this exact game to exist. It uses all of its features in the best way possible. I think that if Wii U launched with this game back in 2012, we would be looking at a completing different, more vibrant platform than we are now.

@Mr_Mustache seriously dude, your level... i cant beat it...

Played this for a few hours today! Really awesome game, I love all the little unpredictable touches... it's so much fun getting a sense of mystery in a 2D Mario game after playing them over dozens of times. It feels like anything could happen!

The sound design for the editor is phenomenal. I messed around with it for maybe an hour or so and made my first level. Gonna sit on it overnight, maybe tweak some stuff tomorrow, and then upload it. Will check out your guys' levels tomorrow as well!

Okay, so I just played a level called "Poop"... some of these levels man... They're terrible...

A neat Airship level roughly in the style of classic levels:

Some sweet spy sounds will make that stage just perfect.

Ghosties and Secrets. I had fun with this one.
