Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker Review (Nintendo Wii U) (9.0)  by

Time for adventure!

Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker releases in just a couple of days! Reviews are flowing in. For the moment I'll quote Zero until I can flesh this information out later today or tomorrow.

Review embargo must have lifted, tons of reviews pouring in

Mostly in the 7-9 range. Averaging an 80% exactly between 16 reviews right now. About what I expected. Should be fun.

I think it's about dang time for Toad to get his own game and deeper personality. Captain Toad is so ridiculously adorable that I think he needs his own amiibo too. Sounds like there are a lot of stages to be had with a lot of uniqueness.

I look forward to sharing tips, strategies, thoughts, and scores(?) come Friday the 5th.

Just finished the first episode and I'm happy to say that I'm really enjoying myself so far. I played the first couple levels of episode 2, and the increase in difficulty is obvious right away, which is a good thing.

It would have been really nice if they included more camera options. Default is zoomed out too far and zoomed in... well, zooms in too close.

This would also be the first game that I would prefer to play on the Gamepad screen if not for the fact that it's gorgeous and I want to see it on my TV screen. I can't help imagining how great it would be in stereoscopic 3D.

@Hinph I agree about the camera. It's not a huge deal, but it would be nice to have a medium between the two.

Finished the first episode 100%...except I can't for the life of me find the golden mushroom in 1-12 Briny Bowl Swimming Hole. It's fun! I'm not sure about the Bonus levels though, I played the first two and they're just sort of...hikes. Not much to actually do except collect lots of coins.

My wife and I are playing this together, taking turns during each stage. We're a little bit into the second episode and we're having loads of fun!

@Hinph
Yeah, the camera is sort of a drag. A middle ground is definitely needed!

@nate38
I agree. I feel the bonus missions are very cool in theory. Revisiting those levels is neat, but yeah, it's like playing Mario 3D World through molasses.

I've played about 15 levels and I'm loving the game so far. Hopefully I get a chance to play more this weekend.

I think my mother-in-law bought this for me digitally based on what my wife told me, but knowing her and technology, I'm not so sure if it happened...my wife told her to check her spam folder (which she had never heard of until this past weekend), to which she replied, "Oh, wow! ... What's a MILF?"

So...yep. I might be getting it.

How do the amiibo integrate into this one? Curious. Or is that option available yet?

@ludist210

Not yet known or unlocked I think. Really anxious to find out though.

Downloaded this last night. My wife played it after I went to bed, so I have no impressions yet, but I'm excited to try it out.

@Hero_Of_Hyrule

Yeah, I hope some people aren't letting their "meh" opinion of the 3D World courses discourage them from giving this game a look. These designs are so much better... and no time limit.

And this is the most relaxing game I've played all year. When I'm playing it I'm able to chill out and enjoy myself. It's not as involved as other charming games like Kirby, and it's not as grindy as other relaxing games like Animal Crossing or Tomodachi Life. Treasure Tracker finds a nice niche that I can't recall any other game filling.
That's exactly how I feel about it. Which is to say, I vegged out on the couch for about four hours playing this yesterday and am closing in on the end (I think). It's not the kind of game that's going to blow your mind, but it's tight and varied and polished, and a clear cut above the merely acceptable Captain Toad levels in 3D World.

So, I've made it to this game's equivalent to the Grandmaster Galaxy. As in, the final super tough challenge after you beat all the other challenges. And it's absolutely insane. I want to see every last corner of this game, but this is more frustrating than fun for me.

Other than that, I'm basically at 100% completion, other than the time trials.

@Hero_Of_Hyrule I was okay with Champion's Road because it was the same kind of platforming you'd seen in the main game, just a lot tougher. MMMF feels like a whole different game than Captain Toad. Which isn't necessarily a problem in and of itself, but it's just not a very fun game. As you said, there's definitely a larger element of luck to it. And while the camera system could be problematic in the main game, it feels like the primary obstacle in MMMF.

The other thing about it is, I feel like I have to go for the level's extra challenge GET 5000 COINS! when I do finish it, because I won't want to go back and do it again. Which adds a lot more time to each attempt, since that challenge means you have to take your time instead of bolting through it as fast as you can.

I may still go for it. Like you, I hate leaving a great game 99% complete, even when that last percent is kind of a hassle. But we'll see. I've got two more weeks of rental time.

I got this as a gift from my in-laws (along with LEGO City Undercover) digitally and took this for a spin last night. It's a lot of fun!I made it through the first ten stages (and the first Super Mario 3D World stage) and have collected everything thus far.

So today I came back to the game after about a week and gave it another try. I didn't really care about getting through it, it was just something to do while half-watching a Game of Thrones marathon on HBO.

Got it on the first try without even putting my full attention into it. What the hell.

Started playing this today. Only did a few levels. So fun! One of my favorite parts of SMG fleshed out in full. Like the little challenges each level has.

Ha, the "boss fights" are great. Tracking treasure is the #1 priority! It's almost as if the boss isn't even there to old Captain Toad.

@TheOldManFromZelda

Agreed. I've finished the first Book and both boss fights were pretty fun!

I was watching a youtube video showing off some of the shows I used to watch as a kid. Toad now reminds me of Doozers from Fraggle Rock.

Breezed through Episode 1 this afternoon, replaying each stage a couple times to 100% them. It's just as fun and charming as I was hoping for. The standard Toad levels ala 3D World are nice, but I'm also really liking some of the stages that are more standard Mario levels that have been re-tailored for Toad.

Was a little worried when the credits rolled, because I had heard the game was short but I didn't think it was THAT short, haha! I'll probably start the next episode later tonight.

Started this game today, playing alternate levels with my teenage daughter, both really digging it and shouting instructions at each other. Up to level 8 at 100%. Good times.

Tried the first 3D World level but found it a bit dull. Do they improve? Are there many of them?
01/13/15, 00:11
@Super_Conzo Maybe like five or six? They don't get better, but there's not that many of them.
