Sonic the Hedgehog 3 & Knuckles (often abbreviated to S3&K, or S3K) is the combined games of Sonic the Hedgehog 3 and Sonic & Knuckles, brought together into one full game through Sonic & Knuckle's "lock-on" cartridge feature. Both games were originally intended to be one, and as such S3K is widely considered a standalone title in it's own right.
Spanning a total of 14 huge stages and 3 playable characters, S3K was the biggest game of the original Sega Genesis Sonic trilogy. The player could choose to play as Sonic, Tails, Sonic & Tails cooperatively, or Knuckles the Echidna to take on Dr. Robotnik and his army of badniks, to reclaim the Chaos, Super, and Master Emeralds and save the world from his apocalyptic Death Egg. The game was the fastest and most furious yet, with sprawling stages and pinball physics, unique level designs, challenging 3D special stages, and multiple unlockable Super forms for all the characters. Each character had different abilities which could be used to take different paths (Sonic had shield powers, Tails could fly and swim, Knuckles could glide and climb walls) adding incentive to replay levels and find secrets. S3K also had Sonic 3's multiplayer versus mode, which featured 5 looping mini-stages. The game is regarded by many Sonic fans as the high point of the series.
Sonic 3 & Knuckles is playable through the Wii Virtual Console by locking a VC purchase of Sonic the Hedgehog 3 onto a VC purchase of Sonic & Knuckles, and through several Sega collection games.
