Sonic & Knuckles is the direct sequel and "second half" of Sonic the Hedgehog 3, releasing on the Sega Genesis in late 1994. Sonic & Knuckles featured gameplay identical to it's predecessor, offering 7 new and challenging stages to the play through, and the option to play as either the high-speed hedgehog Sonic, or the gliding, climbing, punching red echidna, Knuckles. Each character had their own storyline to play through, but otherwise ran through the same stages in the same order, taking alternate paths, and facing a different final boss.
Sonic & Knuckles was unique in that it featured "lock-on" technology, in which players could literally lock a cartridge of Sonic the Hedgehog 3 on to the top of the S&K cartridge, and "combine" the two games into the full, singular game, Sonic 3 & Knuckles. It also allowed the player to lock on a copy of Sonic the Hedgehog 2 to unlock "Knuckles the Echidna in Sonic the Hedgehog 2", where one could play through all of Sonic 2 as Knuckles. It also featured access to yet another game, Blue Sphere, an extension of Sonic 3/S&K's special stages that featured literally millions of levels.
Though Sonic & Knuckles more than holds up as a standalone title, it was intended to be played while locked-on to Sonic 3. Alone it lacks several series fundamentals, like a save feature, options screen, and multiple modes.
Sonic & Knuckles, with full lock-on features, was released on the Wii Virtual Console and several Sega collections.
