Released in 1994, Sonic 3 was the third installment to the Sega Genesis Sonic the Hedgehog trilogy. This time, Dr. Robotnik has invaded the mysterious island in the sky, Angel Island, and Sonic & Tails must tussle both with his badnik robots and a mysterious new foe, Knuckles the Echidna, who guards a sacred treasure of the island. Featuring the trademark high speed, platforming, and "pinball" physics of the series, Sonic 3 offered even more gameplay features than before (such as multiple types of shields to acquire, and fast-paced, 3D isometric bonus stages), more detailed graphics, much larger and extravagant level designs, as well as the return of co-op and versus multiplayer mode.
Despite this, however, Sonic 3 alone is an incomplete game (featuring only about 6 stages). It's story is continued in it's follow-up, Sonic & Knuckles, which featured "lock-on" technology to connect both game cartridges and play both games together as "Sonic 3 & Knuckles" - the single, full game they were originally intended to be.
Sonic the Hedgehog 3 was released for the Wii Virtual Console, and can "lock on" with the VC release Sonic & Knuckles to play Sonic 3 & Knuckles.
