Sonic the Hedgehog was the debut game of the classic Sega mascot of the same name, and a major hit on the Sega Genesis in 1991. Put in the roll of a speedy blue hedgehog named Sonic, players must use Sonic's super speed and super spinning powers to stop the nefarious Dr. Robotnik, who has kidnapped all of Sonic's friends and turned them into vicious robots. The side scrolling platformer featured fast-paced gameplay, lush graphics, large and explorable levels, precise platforming, and wild level design that made use of the game's complex "pinball" physics and momentum system to hurl the player through zones at incredible speeds.
The game was released for the Wii Virtual Console, as well as several Sega Collections for the Gamecube and DS.
