Mario works as a platformer. Mario also works as an RPG. Paper Mario is one of those RPG, and a personal favorite of mine.
Compared to SMRPG before it, and the other games after, Paper Mario focuses on the familiar Bowser kidnaps Peach, and it stays that way, but has got story and characters that is deeper than what you'd get out of this plot in a Mario platformer.
Combat is fun, mixing in timed button presses and control stick movements to increase the effectiveness of your attacks. And everything in the world is pure Mario goodness.
