Developed by Platinum Games and published by Nintendo, The Wonderful 101 (formerly
Project P-100) is a game that comes to use via the makers of
Viewtiful Joe and
Okami.
Targetting a Wii U launch release, The Wonderful 101 sets a currently unnamed super-hero against the forces of a city-destroying, larger-than-life alien invasion. He can't fight them off alone, so he calls upon the help of the citizens of the city, rescuing them from danger and gaining strength as they join his cause. The more in your group, the stronger they become as a whole. The twist of this game comes in the way that they primarily do their battle.
Unlike other games that use sheer numbers to overcome an opponent, The Wonderful 101's protagonists can combine their powers to form a number of different items. Early on you can clump together to form a giant fist (think early cartoons where a swarm of bees make a large, scary shape!) to do massive damage, or turn a giant knob; on the defensive side of things, what could be more protective than an enormous Jell-O mold? As you attract more attention, you can form a giant sword or a ladder to reach new places, and even beyond that a glider is necessary for passing a cavernous chasm where a strong road once laid.
The Wonderful 101 is already drawing strong comparisons to
Pikmin and
Little King's Story; certainly not bad company to be in.
