Retro Game Club Discussion Thread 18: Kirby's Adventure [community]

Not everything is well in Dream Land. For some mysterious reason, the Dream Spring, a magical well that is the reservoir for all the dreams of the citizens of Dream Land, is no longer working. Everyone is being subjected to their worst nightmares every time they go to sleep. Upon reaching the Dream Spring, Kirby finds out that evil King Dedede has stolen the Star Rod, thus depriving Dream Land of the magical energy that feeds its spring. Using 20 unique tricks and your ability to steal your enemies' powers by swallowing them, you'll have to make your way through a horrific land filled with all kinds of nightmares. Recover the broken pieces of the Star Rod, and everyone in Dream Land will sleep peacefully once again. If you fail, the citizens of Dream Land will be subjected to a lifetime of terrible nightmares.

Why not add Kirby's Adventure to your collection, and indicate that you are currently playing it? And don't forget to rate it when you're done!

Am I the only one who kind of hates the controls to this game? Why doesn't the jump button also let you fly? Isn't that the way it works in other Kirby games? I generally don't like pressing up to jump, but I'd probably like it more if you just pressed up to both jump and fly instead of having two separate buttons. I get the feeling that if this game was actually hard I would get really frustrated.

@Jargon Yeah I don't like the controls either. The jump/flying thing throws me off.

I feel the same way about Smash. But in that game, you can disable it, at least.

The whole puff-up/exhale thing absolutely baffles my nephews. They always kill enemies that they want to eat by accident.

What an ugly sentence.

Yea I turn it off in Smash, too. But even back when I didn't, it wasn't as big of a nuisance as the controls in this game are. I'm pretty sure it's not like that in Nightmare in Dream Land, right?

Hmm, it must have been possible. It seems like it would be un-Kirby to totally disable it. But maybe you had to hold up longer to jump?

D-pad Up was the original flight control. I think they switched to jump after Dream Land 2. I remember it messing me up when I suddenly had to press Jump to fly in Kirby Super Star, but now I'm used to it and definitely prefer it. Kinda messed with me going back to up in Adventure.

Did anyone ever play Nightmare in Dreamland? It always looked pretty awesome. I wish they would've changed the gameplay to make the powers work a bit more like in KSS and KRtDL but I suppose that would change the game entirely.

Just finished Kirby's Adventure on my 3DS. It's a pretty awesome game. World 7-6 really brought a smile to my face since it was all in black and white with the original theme song. That last battles were tough, until I learned the patterns.

I have a question: Why is the GBA remake (Nightmare in Dreamland) held in lower regard than the original? As someone who only played that version, I thought it was pretty damned good.

Beat the shit out of it, too. I might've even beaten Meta Knight mode.

I love the GBA.

I took this afternoon to play this game on my 3DS. Beaten it 100%, as well as the extra mode. Took me a few hours to do that, too, but it was fun.

I remember playing the crap out of the remake Nightmare in Dreamland and playing the Meta-Knight mode over and over.
It's funny when you struggle to find the secrets of this game when first playing it, then breezing through them just for the health recovery on the extra modes.

I don't know if I'm going to play Kirby's Pinball land, though.

I might toss in the Kirby collection on the Wii before this club ends and play the Extra mode. I never bothered to try completing it on the NES version because there's no way to save the game, but since the Wii version lets you suspend the game, I could probably do it now.

Wow, what a coincidence! Just started playing the 3D Classics version on my 3DS. Its really pretty! Old pixel games look great with added depth of field.

I just beat the second level. I still don't really get this game, and I'm not sure I'll bother trying. I will beat it, though, since you don't really need to get it to win as far as I can tell.

It's funny what motivates me. The fact that Ninja Gaiden has such a reputation for being hard really kept pushing me to beat it even though no one will really ever know or care that I did. When you have to replay a level a hundred times because it's so hard, you really learn to appreciate things about those tough old school games. With something like this, where anyone can beat it, I don't have that same motivation. I know the Hard mode is more challenging but I wouldn't get that same feeling of accomplishment for beating it and so I don't spend as much time with the game and I don't appreciate it as much.

100%'d regular and hard mode. Fun times!

Well, I finally beat this game. Only got 76% and haven't touched the Hard Mode, but I think I'm done. Certainly got my 30 cents worth haha

Anyone else notice the sound on the Wii U version is very soft? Too bad because the music is great
