Retro Game Club Discussion Thread 18: Kirby's Adventure [community]

Not everything is well in Dream Land. For some mysterious reason, the Dream Spring, a magical well that is the reservoir for all the dreams of the citizens of Dream Land, is no longer working. Everyone is being subjected to their worst nightmares every time they go to sleep. Upon reaching the Dream Spring, Kirby finds out that evil King Dedede has stolen the Star Rod, thus depriving Dream Land of the magical energy that feeds its spring. Using 20 unique tricks and your ability to steal your enemies' powers by swallowing them, you'll have to make your way through a horrific land filled with all kinds of nightmares. Recover the broken pieces of the Star Rod, and everyone in Dream Land will sleep peacefully once again. If you fail, the citizens of Dream Land will be subjected to a lifetime of terrible nightmares.

Why not add Kirby's Adventure to your collection, and indicate that you are currently playing it? And don't forget to rate it when you're done!

You know what I think I'll join in. I've been meaning to go for 100% anyways. But one question for anyone who might have already, what does it mean when a finished stage has a flashing star on it?

@chrisbg99
I cannot remember.

I won't be joining in this time as I finished this game for NewGameber already but have fun guys. Tis a great game.
05/01/13, 10:21
Well that is done. 100% and everything.

@chrisbg99

Flashing star means you found it's secret, if it has one.

I'll get started on this sometime in the near future, probably tomorrow afternoon.

I'll probably join in. I've yet to play the Anniversary Collection disc that I bought in like November.

I've been playing it this past week. Fun game! I think the level design and enemy placement are very clever, as usual for a Kirby game. They really don't let you use that flying ability with impunity.

@ludist210

Actually, the flashing star means you missed a secret!

@Guillaume

Oops. Well I knew it was one of the two...
05/01/13, 16:02
How could you get it so wrong, Lewis?

HOW COULD YOU GET IT SO WRONG!?!
05/01/13, 16:06
I'M SO ASHAMED!!!

But seriously, will start this tomorrow afternoon. Should breeze right through it again. One of my favorite NES games ever.
05/01/13, 16:49
Dunno if I'll start but I did randomly buy it for30 cents. Maybe I will.
05/01/13, 18:53
It's a short game, as evidenced by Chris' posts. Definitely start it! It will be over before you realize it.

@Guillaume

If not this week, then on the weekend surely.
05/01/13, 19:29
Go for it! It can easy be finished in a few hours, and it's a fun few hours.

I have a question: Why is the GBA remake (Nightmare in Dreamland) held in lower regard than the original? As someone who only played that version, I thought it was pretty damned good.

Beat the shit out of it, too. I might've even beaten Meta Knight mode.

...

I love the GBA.
05/01/13, 20:26
I'll probably start this tomorrow. I need to finish Mega Man III for the RFN Retroactive first.

@Anand

I like the GBA version fine, but I prefer the NES version since I played it first, I guess.

Shouldn't we update the list of Awesome to include those that have 100%'d the game and/or beaten (or 100%'d) the higher difficulty? Maybe make that Awesomest and more the KPL to Awesomer?

Cruised through the first four worlds in about an hour. These levels seemed a lot longer back in the day...

Also, the slowdown is so much worse than I remembered. Any time there's an enemy on-screen, the game just chugs. I guess it was necessary to get the game as colorful and lively as it was, but man is it jarring.

Definitely an amazing game back then, though. I still love the boss battles. The Paint Roller and Mr. Shine/Mr. Bright are so cool.
05/03/13, 02:19
Aaaaand that's 100%. I even went for the super annoying secret room in 7-5. Such a pain for a boring reward.

Overall the game doesn't hold up as well as I remember, and I'm really shocked at just how much the slowdown affects the game. They even make the controls notably less responsive when particularly bad. But it was worth a nostalgia run. I wonder just how different Nightmare in Dream Land was.

Just started the game. I'm playing the 3D Classics Version on my 3DS. I've beaten the first two stages. I'm loving the graphics and the 3D effect. I was confused by the controls at first until I realized that I could use Y and B instead of B and A. I think I played this game in its entirety the last time using the inverted controls.
05/03/13, 07:19
I just finished the first World. I'm Level 2-1 now.
