Welcome to the Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate thread! This will be our headquarters for coordinating our Hunts, sharing stories of war, and helpful hints for our brothers-in-arms, compatriots, friends, and neighbors. Please be mindful of folks' different definitions of "spoilers," and remember that not EVERYBODY played Monster Hunter Tri on the Wii, though everybody totally should've.


The "burden" of running this thread has been placed upon me but...I can't do it alone. I will lean on Maxi and others to help with the heavy lifting occasionally, both in planning things and also in feeding this thread. Please keep it bumped (once we get going). If you could, let us know if you're getting this game, WHEN you're getting this game, and what your aspirations are so we can get us situated in groups with likeminded people. Do you want to barely play this game? Is this going to be your new #1? The most fun with this game is had when you get to go out with a group of guys week in week out, so if we can find someone with a schedule similar to yours, you'll have the most fun with it.

Nah, don't put me up there as a posse since I don't know if I'll be on for sure yet. I may also appear late on Sunday (like around 10:30 p.m. central) for an hour or two. I do mostly offline questing right now in the Village.

I got the other Shakalaka and captured a Lagiacrus (and successfully hunted one too), but didn't get enough parts to put together the helmet, faulds, or greaves in that armor set. I still need two horns, a plate, and one more shell shocker.

Yeah, try the Gunlance like @TheOldManFromZelda said. It's like a Switch Axe (which is pure melee) but it uses projectiles.

Successfully hunted another Lagiacrus when I was home for lunch (I can do it in less than 30 minutes solo) and got nothing that I needed. So still four parts to go...guess I'll try again tonight.

Are you busting him up? Like, in order to get a Shell Shocker (or greatly increase your odds?), you gotta splinter his back. Again, I don't read any internet on this stuff, so everything I know is from observations or word of mouth (LIKE THE OLD DAYS; AWESOME). I can tell you that I don't BELIEVE I've ever gotten a Horn WITHOUT his Horns being damaged. I can tell you with great confidence though that I HAVE broken his Horns before (both) and NOT received ANY. Its a tough deal to do. I get his throat like, every single time, and his tail probably 85% of the time. I have more Hides and Scales than I know what to do with, and a few Tails as well.

Yeah, I actually got two tails when I captured him thanks to my food skill. I actually didn't cut it off for the first time ever on this last hunt because I knew I didn't need it. I busted the spikes on his back, his head (at least once, possibly twice), and his throat. I got a horn this morning when I took him out, but just one. I still need two more for the set.

The plate is just baffling me. No idea what I need to do to get it.

Anand mentioned (about the Rathian Plate) that it is a "random draw" but you increase your odds increase with each area busted. Sooo..break everything, cross fingers.?

--I MIGHT be on for ONE HOUR tonight between 7 and 8 EST.

Won't be around then. Going on a walk with my family and then we'll need to get the baby ready for bed.

I bust up everything that I possibly can when I fight Lagi, but man...I down potions like nobody's business during that hunt. My farm can barely keep up.

Yeah, I'm taking it pretty hard when I'm online, too. Gotta mix it up with some Woods runs! We're not built for that stuff. How strong is the armor you're using? I was in Bone stuff forever, but now that I've upgraded to my Guild Stuff, I'm like...2.25 times more resilient. Its crazy. Pretty scary after I took a whack from a Uragaan online the other day and he took HALF my strength. What would've happened to my Bone stuff? F.I.P (Faint In Peace)


Semi-related, a LAGOMBI+ caught me in a corner on a Gathering run the other day and took me down (!!). I was wearing my Lower Level Leathers. Haha, NO GOOD.


EDIT- Your Potions: do you bring both Mega AND standard Potions? I never used to, but I've been doing it this game. That gives me 20 Potions, really. Sometimes I'll tack on a Max or Ancient Potion, too, as well as Armorskin and Demondrug. Oh, and sure to give Health Boost (L) (under Dances) to your Shakalaka. They'll help.....occasionally..

Still rolling with my Arzuros set. It gets the job done against three-stars, but man...I'm getting pummeled now. If I can get this set done and leveled (which I can get it up to five no problem), I'll be good for a while. I'm 2/5 of the way there.

Is there something you can use in the meantime (if Defense is a concern)? Lagi set is a tough nut to crack.

I can help you with the Guild Bard set if you'd like Grind that Lagombi Arena! You'll need 20 Beast Coins, for starters..

I've almost got the Lagi set complete, so I'm going for that...if I can get the plate, the rest shouldn't be that hard when I go through "normal" play. I'll try to capture him in the meantime, and I'll keep going for the tail (since there's a random chance of carving the plate with that). And it's not like I can't take down a Lagiacrus without much trouble, it just consumes a lot of resources when I go after one.

Twenty Beast Coins? Yikes...what else would I need for that?

4 Beast Coins (1p Lagombi Arena)
3 Flying Coins (4p Barioth -OR- the preferred 2p Gigginox+ Arena)
2 Leviathan Coins (2p P.Ludroth Arena)

You have access to each of those right now! Everyone should do it, we'll be like The 9 Muskateers!

A gunlance eh? I was going ask what exactly a Switch Axe is. If it's two weapons in one though, why use a normal lance then? Is it weaker than normal lances, but makes up for it with the projectile ability?

I use the switch axe. When I unsheathe my weapon, it's a powerful axe that is the best at cutting parts off of large monsters. If I press R while it's unsheathed, I get a slightly less powerful sword that cuts pretty well and often adds status ailments (poison, paralysis, etc). So yeah, two weapons in one. Tough to get good with, but worth it.

Got one shell shocker and one horn in a single run last night. Just need one more horn and one plate and I'm all set...

Go talk to the feyline at the port on the far left of the screen. He'll get you there.
