Why not sign up for a (free) account?

Ugh, there's a Maka Wuhu glitch as well...

12/06/11, 18:03
How do people find these? Do they just spend time in the time trials boosting off of random ledges and hopefully skip areas? Hopefully people have the decency of not using these online... yeah, right.

Drafting seems more difficult, yeah. And you can't draft in the beginning, which is good.

This game is pretty fun, man. I loved the second and third cups. The futuristic track, the rainy one (with rain physics!). Super-cool, and full of fun gimmicks. The last cup seems a bit too complex, but we'll see.

@kgtennispro
You totally bailed!! Ah, well. It allowed me to rack up a few Ks.

Well, almost Ks...

@Simbabbad
Luigi does say "It's Luigi time!" So that's something.

Two questions:

1. Can you do team races or battles online? If so, do you need to set up a separate Community just for teams?

2. Is there a way to play with friends online WITHOUT having to join a Community? Like, is there a way for me to open up a room just for people on my friends list?

I got Mario Kart 7 on Friday. Few points: I love the new tracks and the 1-track-in-3-parts idea. The music on the new tracks is awful. I'm finding it a lot harder to fire shells backwards.

I wasn't aware of the Wuhu Loop glitch, but I heard of the Maka Wuhu one on the first day I got the game. And some jerk used it against me online too. That's too bad, really, because I enjoy both Wuhu courses quite a bit.

At least we can agree not to utilize glitches in the NW community...right?

EDIT: With the exception of the first game, Mario Kart's music is always very underwhelming to me. I feel like they should include more Mario-esque themes and touches--I rather like the Piranha Plant Slide and DK Jungle songs for that purpose. But imagine how cool Shy Guy Bazaar would've been with a SMB2 medley!

Should we set up a community for battles?
12/06/11, 19:32
Should we separate the discussion into a separate thread? It's kind of hard-to-follow...

How do you guys like the Time Trials? I think they're pretty awesome and addictive (in the good kind of way). Best use of SpotPass yet. Unfortunately, there was only ONE grid out of the eight tracks that I've raced so far that I needed more than one try to beat. Still, they're a very fun way to do Time Trials. And I'm sure there will be some crazy ghosts eventually.

@Anand

I noticed the SpotPass ghosts were pretty easy, but the built-in ones were no walk in the park. It took me several tries to beat the Mario Circuit 2 ghost, for instance.

@TriforceBun
Heh, I haven't even tried those yet. The SpotPass method seems so much more fun!

Wasn't there something about StreetPassed players populating your single-player game as customized AI constructs, or am I just imagining that?

Yeah I'm really digging the time trials. I think every day we'll get a new set of 4 ghost packs via SpotPass. Hopefully they get more challenging.

Are there any unlocks related to the time trials? There were a few in MK Wii if I recall correctly.

Nothing yet, but I haven't done many.

Everything might boil down to coins. Just as in life.

BTW, I hate the Blue Shell soooo much. I really think it should magically disappear when someone is within half a lap of the finish line. What do you guys do when you're pleasantly cruising along in first, and you hear that horrible sound? I guess I should try braking to 2nd, although it goes against everything I believe in (and sometimes you'd STILL get targeted in previous Karts).

Yeah, blue shell sucks just as much as ever.

The thing that bugs me is that Nintendo has to be aware of the fact that a lot of people hate the thing at this point, so why are they ignoring us? With the whole item customization thing going (no items, all items, shells only, etc.) it makes no sense that they didn't include a "no blue shell" option.

Yet another case where a very simple OPTION can make everybody happy. Ah well. This is still the best Mario Kart game. Hopefully they'll get it right with the Wii U game by letting us fully customize which items we want and how often we want them to appear. I'd actually enjoy the blue shell a lot if it would only appear, say, once every 10 races... or if there were some reasonable way to counter it 50% of the time.
12/06/11, 20:59
But if they were to get rid of the blue shell, wouldn't it feel cheaper then? If you have someone that immediately gets a lead at the beginning, then all hope is lost. Red shells are easily avoided by holding an item behind you and there's really nothing else that could have the player in second place catch up. At that point, you're better off just playing a game with all items turned off.
12/06/11, 21:08
Ideally? More devious course design. hehe.

I'm really hoping for a new F-zero sometime. That has always been the more hardcore Nintendo racer, and it'd be sweet to finally have it online.
12/06/11, 21:15
I'm really disappointed that they've been ignoring that franchise. Having it on the 3DS would be amazing! But it's another game that had snaking in it... I didn't feel like destroying my Wavebird to get good times in the time trials. They better get rid of it if another game comes out.
12/06/11, 21:18
I don't think making the tracks super difficult is an ideal answer either though; I think it'd end up just making the game less accessible.

The blue shell can be very obnoxious, but it's a necessary evil since the most violent/chaotic areas of the race are between like 7th and 3rd. 1st would pretty easily have an insurmountable lead otherwise.

I do think a full Items option (a la Smash) is long overdue, though.
12/06/11, 21:18
The blue shell is somehow more frequent and annoying in Mario Kart 7 than it was in MK Wii. My leads, they vanish so quickly

Anyone down for banana league tonight?
12/06/11, 21:25
Yeah. It's only an option... an option that would reduce most complaints about the series quite dramatically. I understand that this is a series that sells tens of millions of copies and that it needs to remain accessible to those masses.

My favorite moments in Mario Kart are when you are in a room with people who are very closely matched. So perhaps they can do a better job of matching people on skill as well.

This game is definitely such an improvement over Mario Kart Wii. I gave that game to my friend and thought I was done with the series.

I'm not so sure yet. I'll get back to you on that one.
