Really wish this was a remake of the SNES game, but oh well. I'll take it.

Not sure what I think of these character designs. Maybe they grow on you?

Not sure what I think of remaking an N64 game just to add more cutscenes and super cool graphics either! Does the lore of Star Fox 64 really need to be expanded on? I think there's something to be said for getting a thin slice into the world.

On the other hand, if this is how you get people to play arcade games in 2026, and potentially reignite a whole series of arcade games, maybe it's worth it.

That multiplayer stuff kind of seems like a big chunk of the value proposition, huh?

I’m also a little torn, seeing as the game got a remaster already, but it’s hard to deny it looks great. Music sounds amazing. The characters will take a bit to get used to for me, as I’m so used to their cartoony portrayal in previous games, but they do look a lot like the puppets.

@Secret_Tunnel

I like the character re-designs. They look cool and...weirdly seem like they would fit into 'Star Wars.'

And yeah I agree I don't think the lore needs to be expanded upon either, but a lot of kids will be playing this for the first time so they won't know the difference. This game will clearly appeal to us older fans, but I feel the primary demographic they are aiming for is to create new fans of Fox McCloud and his mercenary unit. They aren't even calling this Starfox 64 Remake or Starfox 64 HD. It's just...Starfox. It feels this is an official reboot...again.

Also agreed on the multiplayer bit! I was surprised it was so different than every other multiplayer mode this game got. I figured they would just take the new modes they added to the 3DS version, but it looks like they cooked up something new. And it's online to boot, which was something I felt was sorely missing from Starfox 64 3D.

@PogueSquadron

And agreed with you on all points! I like the new character designs, but I do wish they gave Slippy his cool bead necklace thing from the original game. Speaking of Slippy, I like his voice a lot better than the N64 version. Far less child-like.

I have many thoughts.

First of all, the visuals are really pretty awesome. Great animations, very clean textures, nice looking water. It looks how a 2026 HD StarFox should. The character designs were kind of shocking at first but they're really growing on me and--shot in the dark--I think they'll be looked back on fondly one day for being a little bold and committing to the animalistic nature of the characters. Between this and DK Bananza I do like that Nintendo is stretching their legs with their cast.

The big sticking point to me is the fact that this is yet another remake, and as a guy who still has his N64 hooked up, that's such a buzzkill for me. I get that they want to find a new audience coming off the heels of the SMG movie, but the extra twist of the knife was when she said something like "stage layouts have been kept the same." Just...why?? Is SF64 so sacred that we can't input some mini-bosses, new set pieces, or new sequences in the old levels? In a perfect world, this would be like the RE2 and RE4 remakes--sticking with what works but making adjustments and adding surprises to keep fans on their toes.

And that's really what kills me because everything else looks excellent. Visuals, orchestrated soundtrack, new mission mode etc. If it was something I didn't care about or was a moderate tweak (like the 3DS version) that'd be one thing, but I can't help but wonder "what if" for a project like this. What if it was a SNES SF remake as well, for instance? Throw in all those levels and mix them together for a super-Lylat System to give fans more shakeups. Or maybe an arcade roguelike mode (I said the R word) where you go through familiar stages that ramp up in difficulty over time to see and get buffs at the end of each level to how far you can get. Just some cool hooks to give us SF64 fans something new.

Ah well. At least the game itself looks nice despite it being a remake. Hopefully we see more of Fox and crew in the near future.

@TriforceBun

I don't know if it counts as a spoiler to talk about the other game that leaked as part of this announcement, but I'll just say that I think A Link Between Worlds did this type of remake perfectly. It's named something new, so there's no conflict in trying to figure out what the "real" ALttP is, and it's fully remixed. I do think it sort of dilutes the identity of the original game, but the painting mechanic is so neat that I think it's a valid gaiden master quest that stands on its own. Even if you revisit the original all the time and appreciate its pixel art style more, there's still a reason to play ALBW.

The reason to play this new Star Fox is... that they added more cutscenes? We'll see.

I still find it baffling that they haven't added actual co-op to one of these. It's even got three other wingmen like, right there.

Oh well. No co-op, NO SALE.

It's weird that they're just calling this Star Fox and it's not a remake of Star Fox or a reboot, which are the two cases we usually see a game with the same title as the original. I get why they wouldn't want to bring the 64 into the new title but they could have added something else to the title.

I wish this were a Resident Evil 4 type remake where the core controls + levels designs / etc. are all updated but ah well. I'll still buy it (eventually) because I'm a sucker. Hopefully this will lead to a new game that takes 64 as inspiration.

Also MOP is officially banned from NW if she doesn't finally play this.

If you quad up your firepower you'd break the game lol.

But there's still a co-op mode in the flight/gunner split.

PLAY THE DAMN GAME YOU HEATHEN!

@TriforceBun I tend to agree that I wish there was an extra level or something for longtime fans who played the original and the 3DS remaster. Granted, this IS launching at $50 USD, so that's probably their "out" in terms of new content.

Nintendo is really weird and inconsistent with this stuff.

They launched DKCR HD at an absurd price, and that game had no new content at all, and then they release Mario Galaxy 1 and 2 at full price, but that's TWO Wii games? (In retrospect, DKCR isn't AS bad now that it's been given a patch for Switch 2, but yeah, they really didn't touch it much at all)

Skyward Sword HD, also a Wii game at full price on Switch, but THAT had reworked controls and smoothed out visuals.

Metroid Prime Remastered had no new content at all, and was a big glow up from the original game...but THAT one released at a budget price of $40 USD (probably no faith they could sell it for more).

Mario 3D World had a full price port to Switch but had a whole new side game attached to it.

In terms of their track record, this one isn't too bad? Remake, yes, but with new cutscenes and missions/multiplayer, for $50 USD.

Mostly, I'm just like...I'm absolutely getting this. I hate to be a "vote with my dollar" person but I really want Nintendo to dig back into their old IPs. I wonder if this will set a precedent and we will get a new F-Zero game just titled "F-Zero."

Looking good!

I feel like everyone is mostly incredibly excited for this except for the fact that it’s Star Fox 64 again. And it’s like, we all love Star Fox 64, but they’ve done it so many times now in one way or another. Still, I really want to support them doing more of this stuff, so they kind of have me by the balls.

On a side note, with this game being Nintendo’s first real graphical showpiece for the system, in terms of modern tech and whatnot…does this show that they’re maybe having growing pains adapting to this new generation? Prime 4 was a Switch game, and DK’s Switch roots do kind of show, especially comparing it to early screenshots. Does Starfox being a remake kind of maybe tell us Nintendo wanted to use a familiar game so they could just focus on the tech side of things?

Oh, maybe I do want more cutscenes of these characters...

Oh, I LIKE this idea!

It sounds like (mostly) all of us are on the same page for the most part. Cool with the visuals, slightly bummed that it's the N64 game again, but the low price softens the blow.

@GameDadGrantI really like the idea of them having the original Star Fox as part of a VR training thing. Keep the low poly assets of the original, but at a smooth 4k 60fps? That would be craaaazy.

They actually had a nice looking snippet of something like that in one of the Wario Ware games. Very cool 9-Volt minigame.

@PogueSquadron
Oh yeah! I could totally dig that as well!
05/13/26, 19:15
@PogueSquadron Wasn'tr Bananza their first tech showcase?
05/15/26, 19:19
@Zero There’s a lot going on in DKB artistically, but for me it still didn’t feel like there was a ton going on in that game that felt like it was taking advantage of newer graphics technology. I think the art was great and polished but Star Fox feels more like a game that really tries to dig into what the Switch 2 can do.

Like obviously the destructible terrain probably wouldn’t work on Switch 1, but when I look at a screenshot of that game, I’m never blown away like I normally would at the dawn of a new console.
