It's out! Who's like me and got it on Switch 2? (It's the "everyone has bed-head" version of RE9)

I'm a couple hours into the game, but I play it pretty slowly since sometimes I have to collect my nerves. So far, so good! At this early point it's giving me plenty of heebie-jeebies but also lots of fun; the character swapping works better than expected and I think both styles of gameplay have appeal in this series.

How'd you like 7 and 8? I've still to this day only played the original 4. It's been great to see this series live up to people's wishes for the past ten years, both with the new entries and the remakes.

I can't wait to play this - but I want to wait for a price reduction... so much in my backlog at the moment..

I'm wondering when we will get proper versions of RE2/RE4 remake versions on Switch 2...

I'm a few hours further and into the meat of the first big, main area. It's great so far! I think my favorite new feature is how the zombies often have a history and specific quirks. It's weirdly similar to Luigi's Mansion 1 (of all things) and gives things a lot more personality. It's cool having moments of intrigue and even humor when engaging with the enemies, and it somehow still works despite the graphic horror vibes. Hoping things don't fall off a cliff like they sometimes do in RE, but I'm looking forward to trying out more of Leon's action-y gameplay too.

@Secret_Tunnel
7 was SCARY. I think it took a lot of steps in the right direction after the misfire of 6 but IMO it also went a little too far into grindhouse territory with the fear and violence. And its last third was a lot weaker. It ranks among the middle of the RE pack for me but is still a memorable experience. 8 I haven't played yet but plan to rectify that at some point with the triple-pack (maybe around Halloween). The real winners for modern RE are the RE2 and RE4 remakes. Both are excellent!

@Smerd
These are definitely a matter of "when" rather than "if," but once it happens I'm there for sure.

I beat the game last night (playing on PS5). I really enjoyed it! Some minor gripes here and there (and a few story bits I'm not sure I'm on board with) but overall I feel confident in saying it's the best completely new RE game since original RE4.

It was nice to have the option of using ink ribbon saves again, especially on a first playthrough when you have to guess a bit on when to use one. It brought back a feeling of tension I haven't really gotten from the series in a long while.

I started a second playthrough earlier, switching Grace to third-person and Leon to first-person. I actually think I might like first-person better overall for both characters, but we'll see if that holds.

I think I'm about halfway through (some pretty major plot beats just occurred, to keep it vague) and have been really impressed so far. It might be a hair below RE2make and RE4make but considering how strong those are that's still high praise.

I'm slightly concerned about replay since there've been several big one-and-done set pieces so far, but who knows? Sometimes a game is fun enough that playing it again is entertaining even if there's not a lot of different choices to make. Also, since RE7 this series has really pushed the envelope in terms of gore and language which I don't love, but that's more a subjective thing. But this is absolutely the most violent game I've played, no question.

I'm always interested in hearing what you say about RE! How does this compare to your favorites?

I'm tempted to get this on Switch 2 but I think I will go PS5 for now. Can always pick up the Switch 2 version later, unlike Nintendo, Capcom actually puts their games on massive discount eventually.

Very excited but may wait until my break (1 week from now) to get it so I can actually spend time with it.

Here's the real question we need to address:

@TriforceBun

I'm still getting a lot out of it even as I near the end of my 4th (!) playthrough. I was experimenting a lot with pathing on my last run (no heals), trying to do things in the most ideal order. I did a lot of this with the RE1 and RE2 remakes, where you could do stuff like avoiding the dogs ever breaking the windows in REmake, and delay the appearance of lickers as much as possible in RE2make. I'd be doing things like luring zombies to areas/rooms I had no reason to re-visit as Grace and downing them there, so I could avoid them re-animating later on. Someday maybe, if I'm daring enough, I may try to leave Rhodes Hill completely filled with enemies for Leon to deal with, but thus far I've been leaving Leon with a quiet, empty clinic!

It's not quite as replayable as the RE1/RE2/RE4 remakes, but it is definitely a step up over RE7 and RE8. There are only a few brief spots that have gotten a bit tiresome on replays. There's quite a bit to do between trying to complete the myriad challenges, using different weapon sets, switching camera types (FYI I am 100% first-person for both Leon and Grace at this point, it just feels better to play that way IMO), etc.

Now that I am winding down I feel good about ranking RE9 where I have, in the upper-half of mainline RE games (and their remakes to-date):

RE4 Remake
RE1 Remake
RE2 Remake
RE4
RE1
RE2
RE9
RE3
RE7 VR
RE8
Code Veronica
RE5
RE3 Remake
RE0
RE6

A little further. This might sound weird but the gameplay of the current section (Leon in a larger, destroyed city type area) reminds me a lot of Revelations 2. Which IMO isn't a bad thing at all, but not quite as tight as the stuff in his other (non-RE6) adventures. Still having a very good time.

@Secret_Tunnel
Hah, this reminds me of weirdly horny journalists going on about Leon in their previews/reviews of the game.

@TheBigG753
Nice list! I'm glad to hear that RE9 is fun to replay as well, because I can really get into some of these and get hooked on smart pathing and making the right decision on what to bring where. My rankings from worst to best:

15) RE6
14) RE: Mercenaries 3D
13) RE0
12) RE5
11) RE7
10) Revelations
9) Umbrella Chronicles
8) Darkside Chronicles
7) Revelations 2
6) RE9 (tentative spot, not quite beaten)
5/4tie) RE2make (I need to play this again, hopefully on Switch 2)
5/4tie) RE4make (I need to play this again, hopefully on Switch 2)
3) REmake
2) RE2
1) RE4

The top 6 are all particularly strong I think. I haven't played RE8 yet, CV, or either RE3.

I'm currently playing on PS5, but I wish I would have got the Switch 2 version as I'd be able to play it in handheld mode. It takes me forever to finish a PS5 game because the TV is always being used by the wife or kids.

Anyhoo, I love it, it reminds me of RE7 which I also really loved. Definitely in my top 5, up there with 1,2,4, and 7.

Does anyone think this game is TOO violent sometimes? Like it crosses a line?
