A new entry in the Super Mario series is upon is! We are just days away now from the glorious Super Mario Odyssey! Run, jump, and explore your way through plenty of 'Kingdoms' setup similarly to the great Super Mario 64 and Super Mario Sunshine! This is the Mario game everyone has been waiting for!
Check out Nintendo's now-famous Super Mario Odyssey 1:30~ long commercial!
And check out some of the glorious screens as well! Soon you'll be able to use the special mode found inside the game to pause the action at anytime for a photo, but you can also change the angle in anyway way also. Quite a neat feature.
My hype is calm. It's not like it was for 3D World. I very much look forward to this game but there's SOMETHING about it that gives me slight reservations.
I'm sure come launch day I'll be flipping my shit over it though. That's a given.
Ps. Pre-load is up for anyone going digital. It's tempting, but for something as traditional as Mario I need me the physical copy.
@carlosrox Hmm, Carlos calm hype... that's like 9.9 level hype for the rest of us though right?
I'm always vaguely cautious with new 3D Mario games ever since Sunshine, but it's not like Sunshine was a bad game or anything, just felt a little off at the time.
I've been getting some Sunshine vibes from this myself, which is why my hype isn't quite through the roof. I've loved the Galaxy games and 3D World, so it feels like an almost irrational thing to be worried about (especially since I actually do like Sunshine too), but the worry is there.
I think I'm afraid that the game will be too full of collectibles that don't matter as much as they should (like the blue coins), and that the missions/quests/puzzles will rely too much on exploring or running errands instead of tight platforming.
But we'll see! I have no doubt that it will be a great game, and I've got the whole next week off, so I'm gonna try to obsess about this as much as I can!
I kinda get what you mean. It's weird, because even though I love 64 and Sunshine they are probably my least-favorite 3D Mario games. But I think that has less to do with them being sandbox-style games, and more that they are older and the more recent 3D Mario games have made a ton of gameplay and technical improvements. I think we're going to see a lot of great things coming out of them returning to that style after 15 years.
Maybe it also has to do with Nintendo games being too good this year, that it just doesn't seem possible to have another one on our hands so soon. But here we are...
@Zero Yeah, exactly that was what I meant about exploration instead of platforming. I do love myself some big open areas, but not necessarily in a Mario game. Xenoblades, Zeldas and the like are fine.
@TheBigG753 Actually, you might have a point about Nintendo being too good this year. Got the best Zelda since 1998 in my opinion, and a Metroid that was far better than it could have been. Plus the ARMS, Splatoons and an upcoming Xenoblade that seems otherworldly in more ways than one.
Just for the record: I understand what you mean about SM64, but personally I'm madly in love with that game still. I actually think it's aged with more grace than Sunshine in certain respects. But maybe I'm just weird.
My hype fluctuates daily, but I know my day is clear at work on Friday, so I'll be playing a lot of it. I liked what I played of the demo. It felt like Super Mario 64 for the first time all over again, but with a fresh coat of paint.
