I wouldn't mind trying that out... it must be hilarious on the third lap, assuming that there's not a max amount of bananas allowed on the track at once and that they start disappearing

I might run some bananas with you guys.

F-Zero NEEDS to be online for multiplayer, because it is the least accessible Nintendo franchise ever. GX might be tied with Wave Race: Blue Storm.

@Hinph
Yeah, no "No Blue Shell" races, even among friends, is kind of a thumb in the eye. Honestly, I don't remember Blue Shells being so fucking irritating in the N64 game, but maybe that's because it wasn't online?

I'm not sure how I feel about Lightning making you miss key jumps, either. That WAS already irritating in MK64. As a balancing option, though, Lightning (along with the Blooper, which is pretty vicious in MK7) could replace the Blue Shell, kind of. What if the Blue Shell released poison, so competitors couldn't just zip past you? What if it turned into a Golden Mushroom in the last lap?

I dunno. Still enjoying the game. To be honest, I kind of hated Mario Kart Wii.

The only races I played were with three players and there were still tons of bananas. You can even get the lucky 7 item and it's 7 bananas! It's a mode that brings skilled racing to the forefront, while still allowing for obstacle course-like antics with the bananas.

That sounds fun.

I wish they could patch in more 3rd-D...

At least we can agree not to utilize glitches in the NW community...right?

YES, WE CAN.

My favorite moments in Mario Kart are when you are in a room with people who are very closely matched. So perhaps they can do a better job of matching people on skill as well.

I actually kind of don't like this because it gives you no breathing space. You get hit by an item, and you either get chain hit by EVERYONE who is swarming past you in a big ugly mob, or you just get passed up so fast you don't even need to get chain hit to end up in 8th.

Actually, I was just thinking last night "why did Mario Kart DS online seem so much less stressful than Wii/3DS when it had the same general item set and frequency?" and then it dawned on me... only having 4 players, while based on the game's limitations more than purposeful design, led to more races that had a lot more breathing room and you could really get into a groove and race. I feel like these 8 player matches, especially with everyone at an equal level, just become about constantly fending off (and getting hit by) items which doesn't leave as much space to get into the racing. Simple math shows that even with the same item frequency, you only have half the items to deal with as an 8 player race.

Hmm. Is anyone here actually using our "no items" league? Aren't there other options like creating a league with only one item? A green shell only league or something could be interesting. Or boring.

@Anand Well you can do races with no blue shells, but you either have to do no item races or "shells only", "bananas only", "mushrooms only" or "bob-ombs only" races. And frankly I wouldn't mind if we set up a community for one of those, although they're not as good as being able to choose many items and leave a few key sucky ones out. A few options, but god, why is it so hard for Nintendo to just let us create a community race and choose which items we do and don't want in our races? I feel like Nintendo is slowlyyyyyyyy getting there with online options, as each new Mario Kart has more online functionality than the one before, but considering half of these features don't even exist in their offline Mario Kart, I have to wonder if Mario Kart will ever get anywhere near the level of customization that Smash Brothers has. Or even like halfway there would be fine.

Hmm, there is no way to do like a "community" time trial leaderboard, is there? I'd assume you can still check how you compare against your friends when doing time trials, but it'd be cool to be able to set up a leaderboard for a specific community and be able to check exactly where you stand in the time trials.

Sigh. Eventually?

@VofEscaflowne

They do start disappearing, I've seen it. And it's kinda a bummer because if you're in a small race like 4 or less people and you're the last one, well you're getting stuck with bananas in your way and on the return lap, the guy in first sure as hell has nothing to worry about if the track is long enough. The bananas disappear I think after a time limit.
12/07/11, 00:19
Yeah, I'm doing a Banana community race right now, and it's kinda boring.

I just get ahead and then have nothing to worry about, heh

EDIT: Oh and there was one part where I saw like 7 bananas on the road. Then just as I reached them *poof* they all vanished ;p

Shells would be more interesting. Is shells just green shells, or red shells as well? Hmm, if it is green AND red shells it is close enough to the original SMK item balance that I keep bitching about being so much better! Sure it is missing stars and banana peels but whatever, that game was mostly about the shells.

You, I and everyone would assume, yes...

12/07/11, 00:36
@anon_mastermind Hmm. It does show other people's best times and such when you go into time trials, are you saying that it doesn't even show your friends anymore?! Geez, Mario Kart always seems to be two steps forward, one step back. Or sometimes two steps forward, two steps back.

Here's to hoping they can somehow update the game.
12/07/11, 00:44
Wait....I just went to join another Banana Community race, and it put me into spectating saying that I'll join the next race....

Why hasn't this happened with our community!?
12/07/11, 00:47
@kgtennispro Hmm, I know that our communities have 4 race "cups" do all communities have this? Either way perhaps they were on their last race in a cup or something?
12/07/11, 00:49
@kgtennispro

Those are "official" communities, right? I guess they have a different set of rules to them. Or as Zero pointed out, is this a single race community? Can you even create one that doesn't work on a 4 race basis?
12/07/11, 00:50
Nope, it's 4 races just like ours

I joined in after they finished the first race.

I guess maybe it only goes for "official" communities. Which would be lame
12/07/11, 00:54
@Zero

Hmm. You might be right about the number of players.

I definitely prefer 8 to 12.
12/07/11, 00:56
Perhaps it works differently when there is more than one group playing? I'm not sure.

Fink, ploot and I are gonna be playing if anyone wants in on this!
