It's like Advance Wars only... not. More fantasy and RPG elements, and a much deeper story.
The most interesting aspect to me is that EVERY SINGLE member of your army has their own background and story and strengths and weakness. And when someone dies, they are dead for good. Makes you really think before making a move.
