After over a decade of dormancy, the X-COM series (now rebranded XCOM) was resurrected by Firaxis Games, who attempted to create a remake/reimagining of the first X-COM title. Merging together the US and European names of the first game, XCOM: Enemy Unknown was a huge critical and commercial success. It helped to revive interest in turn-based tactical/strategy games on the computer, and demonstrated that one could successfully remake a classic game which streamlines and refines the game design, while still remaining intellectually compelling and challenging.
