Hudson Soft's first game in the storied Bomberman series.
Making his first appearance (and with the
Mega Man treatment), Bomberman is not the cheerful, cartoony, pink-pooftball guy we've known and grown to love. On the contrary, he's just a simple robot doing simple things in a bomb factory. It becomes overrun with bad guys, and he needs to take them out before getting out himself (apparently, if he makes it to the surface he'll become human!). Each enemy has its own weaknesses and movement patterns; most will move in a single direction, others turn at will, some float through bricks that you can't go through, and some don't play by any rules at all.
For weapons, you start with a single bomb that explodes in a 3x3 cross, but finding and picking up a fire icon will extend the blast one square in each direction, bringing it up to a 5x5 cross. This can be extended many times, and you can also find bomb icons that'll allow you to play more than one bomb at a time as well. These, too, can be collected over and over (and eventually making huge chain reactions which are 50% of the fun, or 400% fun for pyromaniacs). There are other icons to find as well, those allowing you to pass through bricks, protection from your blast, or even more valuable, an icon which allows you to set off bombs when
you want to. Set your traps, and wait! The seeds of
Proximity Mines in the Facility were watered here..
Even with these upgrades, you must be careful. You're still as vulnerable as ever, and a hasty decision can leave you trapped in the corner face to face with your own bomb. Quick reflexes, a solid gameplan, and a little bit of luck will be your only friend through 50 levels of gameplay.
Fun for the whole family, and a game that your mom can possibly beat before you. Mine did.
