Although ACen describes itself as an “anime, manga and Japanese popular culture convention”, there is also a very large focus on video games, to such an enormous extent that I’m a bit surprised that they haven’t worked “video games” into more of the descriptions of the convention. I have already mentioned the gaming room and gaming swag in my impressions feature, and you have probably seen my top 10 Nintendo-related cosplayers photo feature by this point. For my final feature I am going to talk a bit about some of the video gaming panels that I attended at the convention... (more)

One of the benefits of being invited to ACen 2013 as press is that I got the chance to participate in press-exclusive interview sessions with two of the key guests of ACen 2013. The title to this feature may be slightly misleading, because both of the voice artists in question have done their work primarily in animation as opposed to video games, but as each of them also have a substantial amount of video game voice acting roles on their respective resumes as well, and considering the nature of Negative World, I decided to tailor this feature more to those roles... I have just returned from my second and last day at Anime Central (ACen) 2013, “the Midwest’s largest anime, manga and Japanese popular culture convention”, which takes place at the Hyatt Regency O’Hare hotel and the Donald E. Stephens Convention Center in Rosemont, IL, a suburb northwest of my beloved Chicago. ACen is an annual convention that debuted in 1998, has taken place every year since then, and is a very big deal in Chicagoland, with thousands attending each year, and many of its fans being repeat attenders. However, this is the first time that I have made my way to the convention, so the experience was brand new to me. The convention ran from Friday through Sunday, May 17-19, and I attended on both the 18th and the 19th. I’m going to do a couple of features on some of the more specific things that I have to talk about, so this is just going to be my general impressions and a walkthrough of my time at the convention. Think of it as my journal of the show... (more)
