Just announced on Nintendo Direct: A new Yoshi's Island game coming to the 3DS.

Someone below will post more details, I'm sure. Don't look at me. I'm still mad that Ludist beat me to the Earthbound announcement by like 2 seconds.

Yoshi's Island: The third installment in the beloved franchise is making its way to Nintendo 3DS. Yoshi and Baby Mario are back with flutter jumps, ground pounds and egg throws, plus a host of new actions that use the unique features of Nintendo 3DS. More details about the game, as well as launch timing, will be announced in the future.

BAM!

I saw video of it, and it looks like it's going back to its roots, though I can't say I like the art direction it's taken. It's still early though...my curiosity level has increased.

This franchise is still a complete unknown to me. I kept waiting for the original to come out on Virtual Console. I'll give it a little bit more time since Wii U VC is starting up soon, but eventually I'm gonna just have to find some other way (and not the GBA port, I want the full experience!)

Holy shit that looks beautiful. I want it on Wii U!

But yeah that looks gorgeous. I hope with all these killer announcements there's some solid Wii U stuff in the works!

I'm hoping this one sticks with Baby Mario. The multiple baby thing in YIDS was just too much for me.

Holy crap! I can't believe Nintendo is spitting out sequels to their most beloved SNES games like this, right now, and I can't believe how promising they both look! Fantastic! Now if only Koji Kondo would compose for both games. Ooooo.

@ploot

I was recently informed to avoid the acronym YIDS, haha.

Very cool news, but I'm not sure how I feel about the art style yet. The pseudo-rendered look that shows up in this, M&L and the new Zelda all feel a little outdated to me and remind me a bit of Mario vs. DK.

Also, is Artoon doing this one too? I'd prefer EAD.

@TriforceBun

Artoon is gone.

@Guillaume
Oh man, everything means EVERYTHING nowadays.

@TriforceBun
I feel similarly regarding the art style, although I don't see it as much in Zelda. It's almost as if there's a very thin, lightly-coloured line around every character/object, giving the picture a washed-out look.

My initial excitement was tempered when I remembered that we did get a sequel to Yoshi's Island, and it wasn't that great. I need to know who is working on this game before I get too excited.

@Jargon Yeah I'd say try to play the SNES original if you can. The GBA game hits the gameplay perfectly and even adds some stuff (I believe), but the graphics take a small hit and the sound takes a major hit.

@Zero
Also, screen space is an issue. You can't see a lot of the surrounding area at once.

I can't tell with these small screens, is it a mix of sprites and rendered 2D?

True, but it wasn't really *bad* either. It just was nowhere near as amazing as the SNES original. And let's be honest, has ANYTHING been as good as Yoshi's Island? still, Yoshi's Island DS should have been better than it was.

@Zero@ploot

Stop! You two are making the GBA port of Yoshi's Island sound terrible! It's actually quite good! Just...not as good as the original (though it does have added content). Still, well worth playing!

So we have sequels to A Link To The Past and Super Mario World 2 from the SNES.

Hmm.....something is missing.

Stunt Race FX, yes...Oh. You mean that. Well, that too, absolutely.

This series has needed a proper sequel for a while now. Agree about the art style looking a little uncomfortable - a bit busy and incongruous in some places.

@GameDadGrant Yeah but if someone can play the original, I'd highly suggest that they do that. Especially since Yoshi's Island has one of my favorite soundtracks EVER and it gets all tinny on the GBA game.
