10 Must Have Wii Games out of YOUR collection... [roundtable]

Ok people... The Wii is almost over - In another month, it will be replaced (but not forgotten) by it's new counterpart. As you look at your Wii collection, imagine that all your games just went up in smoke... (not a nice thought I know) - what ones would you miss the most? What do you think are the most important (not necessarily the overall best) Wii games in your collection?

It should be hard to do as I only want 10 - listed in any order you like. If you have less then 10 Wii games after 6 years you are seriously missing out on some wonderful games.

Ok .. Me first. My collection is here in case you wanted to know but the 10 games that are most important in my Wii collection are as follows - in no special order:

Donkey Kong Country Returns. Challenge was back in a big way - and so is 2D platforming. Wonderful.

Tatsunoko Vs Capcom. Easy to just put in and play - it's a solid fighter. Exciting, Tight - and only for Wii.

The Last Story. As the final Wii game added to my collection - I was very pleased with this title. I found that even though the story was a bit on the 'typical' side - it still drew me in and that's what won me over.

Metroid Prime Trilogy. Ummm yeah. You don't have this one yet? Are you nuts?

Muramasa: The Demon Blade. This game was so.... good. It's a unique title on the Wii system with a fantastic art style. I just enjoyed it and appreciated the effort the developers put into this game.

Super Mario Galaxy 2. What else can I say about this game? It's awesome!!

Xenoblade Chronicles. Another huge RPG game - and it's for Wii. Play it now.

Mario Kart Wii. Tons of multiplayer fun to be had - even to this day with NW friends online and friends and relatives that come over. It's a must have.

Brawl. Any Objections? Didn't think so.. It's fun and a Wonderful Nintendo Fan Service Game even if online play wasn't the best..

The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword. I stil think so highly of this game - it was overall, a perfect game to play. Way to go Zelda.

There you have it. Ok - lets have yours!

I actually have not played much out of the massive Wii catalog as I have only really started gaming 'hardcore' for the past year or so. Nevertheless I have some favorites.

Super Smash Bros
Super Mario Galaxy 2
Skyward Sword
Donkey Kong Kong Country Returns
Pikmin NPC
Pikmin 2 NPC
Twilight Princess
Mario Kart Wii

Will probably add Xenoblade and TLS on here once I get them.

Love the dude staring into big ol' breasts in that Xenoblade image.

Super Mario Galaxy - Pure uplifting joy, like a Disney movie. I like SMG2 a bit better as a game, but it didn't quite have the magic of SMG1. Plus the Wii remote gimmick levels were pretty good.

Sin & Punishment: Star Successor - The Wii pointer doing what it does best: revitalizing an old genre by adding a new dimension to it.

LOZ: Skyward Sword - Proof that motion controls can stay engaging over a lengthy adventure. Mostly.

Red Steel 2 - Proof that motion controls are perfectly suitable for intense action games. Wish the game lived up to the controls' potential a little more, but oh well.

Punch Out - Proof that it's never too late to revisit an abandoned play style and squeeze more awesomeness from it than it ever produced before.

Mario Strikers Charged - It's just dang fun to play with friends. So dang fun you guys.

Super Smash Bros Brawl - Absolutely stuffed with content.

Metroid Prime 3 - Top shelf art and atmosphere despite weak hardware. This would be MP Trilogy if I owned it, but I don't.

Mega Man 9 - Old school gaming perfection. PERFECTION.

Wii Play Motion - An all-too-brief taste of what might have been...if only developers had designed games from the Wii remote's strengths outward instead of trying to cram real-world experiences into the inadequate Wii remote. The Teeter Targets game is still the most perfect implementation of motion controls I've come across.

Top 10:

Resident Evil: The Darkside Chronicles

A fantastic on-rails light gun shooter that helps flesh out the Resident Evil franchise. It's not a survival-horror game, but it's a really good "light-gun" shooter that makes really good use of the unique Wiimote, as well as having some of the best graphics on Wii.

FAST: Racing League

There was no official F-Zero game for the Wii, but this game pretty much makes up for it. Fantastic graphics, excellent sense of speed, tons of tracks that are both challenging and enjoyable...all for a mere $10. Awesome.

Red Steel 2

One of the games that really made good use of the Wii Motion Plus. A very fun first-person brawler with a really fantastic East-Meets-West aesthetic.

Final Fantasy: Chrystal Chronicles - The Crystal Bearers

This is a really great adventure game set in the fantasy world of...well, Final Fantasy. Maybe even the best console Final Fantasy released this entire generation. Maybe.

Silent Hill: Shattered Memories

A horror and psychological thriller done right. Absolutely fanastic and a must-play.

Super Mario Galaxy

What can be said about this game that hasn't already been said before? It's really great. Play it.

MadWorld

This game is ridiculous and disgusting, while being stylish and outrageous. Which is why it is so good.

No More Heroes 2

One of the better action-humor games of the generation. With that special Suda 51 'slant.'

The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword

Motion controls realized, an adventure that is truly epic, and a grand experience for any gamer. One of the best.

Tatsunoko vs Capcom: Ultimate All-Stars

I am a fighting game fan, so this one is a shoo-in. Tons of content, excellent, balanced fighting system, great graphics, sound and solid online infrastructure and lots of extras, this deserves a spot on any Wii game list!

This is a real hard list to make considering all the great games I have but I'll give it a go.

Metroid Prime Trilogy - Prime 3 alone is good enough alone but this trilogy is almost perfect.

Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword - Great use of motion controls and a fantastic artstyle.

Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess - Owning and playing through both versions of this, I'll still give the nod to the Wii version. If even it was just a replacement for a button press, I had a lot of fun with the controls.

Tatsunoko vs. Capcom - My favorite fighter of this generation. Tons of fun.

Donkey Kong Country Returns - Almost perfect 2D platforming bliss.

Kirby's Epic Yarn - I'll probably love this art style forever. Just makes a great game more memorable.

Xenoblade Chronicles - Best RPG I played this generation. So glad it got over here.

Super Mario Galaxy 2 - Choosing between this or SMG is like choosing between children.

Super Mario Galaxy - So I won't. A glorious game. Hell these might be the best on the system.

No More Heroes 2 - Manages to be even more absurdly fun and entertaining than the first.

Honorable Mentions: Brawl, Mario Kart, LostWinds 1&2, TLS, NSMBWii, A Boy and his Blob, de Blob 1/2.

The list could go on.

In no particular order:

Super Mario Galaxy
Super Mario Galaxy 2
Legend of Zelda Twilight Princess
Legend of Zelda Skyward Sword
Xenoblade Chronicles
Metroid Prime Trilogy
Donkey Kong Country Returns
Punch Out
The Last Story
Kirby's Epic Yarn

This won't be on my list, but I'm glad to see that someone else liked this game. It's got some rough spots, but I still enjoyed the varied gameplay, and the story is better than the likes of Xenoblade and The Last Story.

I do, I do! But this isn't the time or the thread to get into that.
10/18/12, 21:51
1) Super Mario Galaxy/Super Mario Galaxy 2
2) Metroid Prime Trilogy/Metroid: Other M
3) No More Heroes/No More Heroes 2: Desperate Struggle
4) ExciteTruck/ExciteBots
5) New Super Mario Bros. Wii
6) Sin and Punishment: Star Successor
7) Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn
8) Dead Space: Extraction/The House of the Dead: Overkill/Resident Evil Chronicles
9) Madworld
10)Wii Sports/Wii Sports Resort

Because I like to give props to all games not just one in the series. Also it seemed odd to have multiple listings for light gun games.
10/19/12, 01:50
@Mop it up

We will get into that later - no problem my friend!
I like Brawl simply because it's a decent fighter - with lots of Nintendo History - something that I would 'miss' in my collection if it all went in smoke. Online? Not the best. But yes, another thread..another time..

@GameDadGrant

Wow....good, unique picks... I was thinking of RE:DC and FFCC as well but there were a couple of titles I would miss more.. I'm going to have to try that racing game sometime!

@nate38
Yes...I liked the Xeno pic as well... Good shout out to good old Mega Man .. I haven't played 9..but I do have 10.

10/19/12, 02:20
@Smerd I like the first two games for those reasons, it's just the third game I don't like.

I'm still thinking about what I'd pick... I mean, this isn't a "best of" list so it's a lot harder to choose. Since I never sell my games, then I've never really thought about which ones I'd want the most, because, well, I want 'em all! I don't want to give any of them up! So far, only Mario Kart Wii comes to mind, I've played it a lot in both local and online multiplayer so it's definitely a good one to have around. The rest... well, I'll probably just list games at random.
10/19/12, 02:26
Roughly ranked:

10. Super Paper Mario
9. New Super Mario Bros. Wii
8. Other M
7. Metroid Prime 3: Corruption
6. Skyward Sword
5. Donkey Kong Country Returns
4. Super Smash Bros. Brawl
3. Twilight Princess
2. Super Mario Galaxy
1. Super Mario Galaxy 2
10/19/12, 02:27
@Mop it up

I don't sell my games anymore either... They are all on my shelf for a reason - It is a very hard decision - which is why I created the thread. No rank/order is needed and we already have some great answers so far!

The list, in it's rough state, can illustrate what kind of gamer you are.. Some people picked the classics...others picked a lot of niche titles. It's all cool to see.
10/19/12, 02:37
I'm going to go with only the games that I've played to completion, so Super Mario Galaxy 2, Donkey Kong Country Returns, Red Steel 2, Xenoblade Chronicles, The Last Story, and many others are not included in my list.

10. Icarian: Kindred Spirits
9. LostWinds: Winter of the Melodias
8. Prince of Persia: The Two Thrones
7. Fluidity
6. Resident Evil 4: Wii Edition
5. Metroid: Other M
4. Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword
3. Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess
2. Metroid Prime Trilogy
1. Super Mario Galaxy

Special mentions: Silent Hill: Shattered Memories, Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Castlevania: The Adventure Rebirth, and Resident Evil: Darkside Chronicles.

This is gonna be hard... these are not in any particular order btw.

Donkey Kong Country Returns

Such glorious 2D platforming. The title feels huge and epic, unlike a lot of retail sidescrollers. It's extremely well crafted and a joy to play.

Silent Hill: Shattered Memories

A very good game and criminally underrated, as you already know. It's a very special game that would not work without motion and IR, it was made for the Wii and took full advantage of the system. Games like this is what the TGS 05 Revolution trailer teased. Also it has a fantastic story.

Super Mario Galaxy Games

If you own one of these games you gotta own the other. Together they provide like 40+ hours of masterful Mario platforming, I rest my case.

No More Heroes

You gotta own this game if you enjoy anime, video game and film culture. I adore the sequel to death, but it's just a very good and unique action game. It's not something special like the original.

Metroid Prime Trilogy

They all come in one disc. Now I'm not usually one to worship optical discs, but this one has some GOOD content in it. You gotta own the game because pointer controls benefit the first two games immensely.

MadWorld

MadWorld is a work of passion. It knows exactly what it wants to be and delivers that desire flawlessly. It doesn't have everything but what it does have, I don't know how it could've been much better. It's not for everyone, but this is my list.

BIT.TRIP RUNNER

Man, the reasons why this game is so good. There are too many to list! It is ridiculously hard, but oh so fun. By the way, the difficulty is a plus in my book.

Pikmin 2

Not a Wii game, but neither is Resident Evil 4 and y'all are putting it on your lists so, Pikmin 2 is definitely going in mine. It's a fantastic game, so carefully and brilliantly constructed.

The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess

Haters gonna hate, they always have and they always will. It's unfortunate, but inevitable, since we're all haters in someone's eyes. I love this game, yeah it didn't have the biggest creative spark in the franchise and some of the wolf stuff was lame, some of the items could've been balanced better but I enjoyed Twilight Princess immensely, there's no getting around that. I cared about this Hyrule a ton and I know I'll be replaying this game for a long time.

World of Goo

What a great little game. So nice, if only developers with tons of money and resources made games like this.

Honorable Mentions: Sin and Punishment: Star Successor, Mega Man 9, Resident Evil 4, Okami, The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword.

@Stephen

+1 for Zelda:TP. I really enjoyed it....

I'm so glad listing these games have been just as difficult for you guys as it was for me. There are so many great games on Wii - a lot I haven't even played yet it seems (*cough* nomoreheroes *cough*)

It seems like the consoles that only rival Wii's great library (for best variety/overall goodness) is the SNES and PS2. Any thoughts on that?
10/23/12, 04:26
I'll go...

Bit.Trip Complete
Donkey Kong Country Returns
Little King's Story
Metroid Prime Trilogy
No More Heroes
Rayman Origins
Super Mario Galaxy 2
Super Smash Bros. Brawl
Wii Sports Resort
Zack & Wiki

That ought to keep me pretty busy.

Hmmm...

Donkey Kong Country Returns
Fragile Dreams: Farewell Ruins of the Moon
The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword
Mario Kart Wii
Metroid Prime Trilogy

@ludist210 I always wanted to play Fragile Dreams, it sounds like it's totally up my alley but I keep forgetting. I'm a big "style over substance" person so everyone tells me I'll love it.
