Man, Nintendo has really been bringin' the anime lately! [roundtable]

I mean, you've got Fire Emblem, Daemon X Machina, Astral Chain, Dragon Quest XI, Smash trailers... even Link's Awakening has an '80s style anime intro!

I haven't been watching much anime lately, but I'm glad that Nintendo's keepin' them fires burning!

I mean, it's probably just coincidence, but I still appreciate Nintendo's support of this Japanese medium, in these hyper-realistic times.

How about you guys? Are you lovin' it?!

I just noticed this last night. I don't like it!

...nah, I'm kidding. I've never gotten into Dragon Ball, but Akira Toriyama's stuff is different enough to make DQXI feel like not-a-stereotype. Fire Emblem, on the other hand... well, to be fair, the voice acting is actually pretty great, which makes the weird we-can't-decide-if-our-game-is-a-movie-or-a-play spoken-dialogue-over-a-dialogue-box trope a little more tolerable.

I suppose I'll have to check out Astral Chain too... 😩

Eichiro Oda needs to team up with Nintendo for an open world Wind Waker spiritual successor! One Piece is the one manga I've really gotten into, and it's the only thing I've ever encountered that I love as much as (or maybe even more than!?) Zelda. It has its own style! Come for the sense of optimism and friendship, stay for the world-class world-building. Hero of Hyrule was right:

Oh, One Piece is TOTALLY like that. Ideas from chapter one come up again around chapter 600. A background character in a flashback ends up playing a big role hundreds of chapters later. A throwaway line ends up having significance much later on. Even the overt stuff, like seeing some of the 7 warlords appear waaay before it's time for the straw hats to face them. Mihawk is a good example. You get some more of that around the time you get to Jaya. And there so many mysteries out there waiting to be solved. And because it's so good about planting those seeds super early, you want to go back and look for clues. It's the best about stuff like that.

You're close, Max. That'd be cool. But I'll take One Piece instead. Breath of the Wild was the best Avatar: The Last Airbender game ever made, and Wind Waker is probably the best One Piece game. Now go all in!

I wonder if the Mario movie will be any good?

I'd personally like something in between these two extremes...

Definitely a fan of almost any art style over hyper realism! :)

The FE games always look terrific, and wow is the Dragon Quest demo gorgeous.

Hyper Realism IS a style!

...is what most people will tell you. Not me, though!

The push for Ray Tracing baffles me. Who the hell cares? If you want to see the real world, go outside. I dunno. I shouldn't be judgmental. But I play games to do things that I could never see in reality and explore exotic worlds.

Y'know, now that Nintendo has a good grasp on cel-shading and enough power to pull it off, I always wonder whether they'll just make it the default house style. But they still mix it up to keep things fresh. Like Link's Awakening and Yoshi's... various things. And then they have their standard Cartoony CG style for Mario spinoffs like Mario Party and Luigi's Mansion and Mario Tennis. Those could use a shakeup, probably.

Anyway, I'd like to see a cartoon Animal Crossing.

Your passion for One Piece impresses me! I like One Piece, but I've only read up to the Skypiea arc. I wouldn't mind getting one of those Ganbarion action games that summarize the whole series.

It's just so long!

I’m down with anime. I like the style, it adds a certain level of “oomph” to action scenes. And it just looks better to me than most other art styles. At least, IMO.

I even don’t mind it in Castlevania. Even Bloodstained has an anime feel to it, which I dig.

Yeah, sometimes the standard Mario CG style looks pretty plain in this day and age. They're starting to play with it a bit though--Mario Odyssey did a nice job making it pop more, giving it more expression, etc. But I never want to return to the days of New Super Mario Bros. Wii being the latest look of our favorite plumber!

@Anand To be fair, most people aren't capable of playing professional sports, for example. Not my thing, but I understand it.

@Anand

Skypiea is where I stopped reading as a kid, that was when they put out like one volume a week to catch up to the Japanese release and I had no hope of catching up. Now I'm an adult with disposable income and I can buy all the books I want!

The length is a feature, not a bug! One Piece arcs have this loop where they go to a new island, all these wacky new cartoon characters get introduced, you start to think to yourself, "okay, I don't really care about all this new nonsense, maybe this is where the series finally jumps the shark," but then they tie all the new stuff together with crazy backstories that show how actually there's a really fascinating "rational" reason for all this goofiness that somehow makes you care about even more characters and concepts... who then go on to be permanent parts of the story moving forward, leading to this compounding effect where the world gets exponentially more and more interesting as it goes on!

It's amazing!

Somebody clearly never played Tokyo Mirage Sessions if they think the recent stuff is anime.

Hey, set the sports title in a world of swords and sorcery, and I'm down!

That's what Fantasy Football should really be. Dragons and Wizards, and shit.

@pokepal148
Clearly, nobody played Tokyo Mirage Sessions.

(I have it, though.)

@Secret_Tunnel
Well said! That was certainly true of the stuff that I read. And I'm impressed that you still buy comics! We are a rare breed...
