Mini Golf Resort (Nintendo Wii) Review

Firstly, I am in no way an eloquent writer and I truly wanted my first NW review to focus on a great game. Having said that, I MUST spread the word about this travesty of a game. I recently hosted a holiday party and we all exchanged gifts that had a max value of $20. I was the recipient of one Mini Golf Resort. Below are my impressions.

I'm a big fan of simulations. Simulations leave you with an opportunity to utilize the game’s physics to pave your own unique experience every time you fire up the game. Golfing (mini or professional) requires extreme precision. That's why I believe golf games need to first focus on the controls and physics. Obviously, this is not what Tivola Interactive did. From the box art one might think that this game has a lot to offer. M+ compatibility and over 1,000 holes does sound like a great deal. Unfortunately, this is too good to be true. This is just another reason how the casual focus on Wii games has jaded a lot of companies into developing rushed, low budget, and down right broken games.

The main menus of this game are a bit cluttered and sometimes confusing. Specifically when setting up a new party game. Many options are thrown on the screen all at the same time. The in game HUD is very simple and doesn’t give the player much to work with. One specific flaw is not showing how to execute a swing. The motion controls aren’t even discussed within the manual of the game.

Randomly generated or not? Your guess is as good as mine.

The actual hole designs vary from interesting to horrible. Of course, I didn’t get through all 1,000+ holes but many of them had me thinking, did the game randomly generate this hole?? Speed boosts, fans, warp zones, and tunnels are among some of the items found when putting.

The visuals of this game are just OK. Many times there were aspects about a hole that I couldn’t make out due to blurry textures or just plain bad polygon construction. Water effects were nice but not much golfing can be done there.

For the majority of my experience with this game I played within the “Pirate” themed course. The sound track produced many lolz amongst my friends as it was extremely repetitive and goofy. Every four beats a pirate would speak up and exclaim, “Hey!”. One of the more memorable aspects of the game.

The controls are bad, just bad. This is where a golf game really needs to shine and its not there. Even with M+ the controls are worse than the original Wii Sports golf game. Numerous times the game would not recognize that the player was swinging. The power meter is a joke as subtle swings resulted in blasting your ball off the course. Inconsistent and unreliable controls end with frustrated gamers dancing around, waggling.

I view replayability as a direct result of gameplay and the game’s ability to provide a new experience every time. The controls really kill any desire to revisit this game. The sometimes poor course designs have you flipping a coin every time you start a new hole. An online mode would have helped but you’d still be stuck with the same broken controls.

You have been forewarned, this game blows.

Damn, surprising score. I mean, it has over 1,000 holes to play, dude. Over one thousand!

This review reminds me I really need Wii Sports Resorts. Need it.

I am actually a big fan of Golf in Wii Sports. Once you figured out the nuance of how the game reads your movements, you could definitely introduce some repeatability. All it takes is some muscle memory, so I do find skill to be important. The game's controls aren't really all that random. My only gripe is it's a shallow game. After 9 holes and a few clubs I wanted more, and I hear Resort adds more elements to Golf.

Wii Sports Resort is truly a gem. They showcase M+ in every way and I agree, the golf in it is great stuff.

@Pandareus

I bet its score would double if it were over 9,000!

@ludist210

If you could go Super Saiyan in this game I would have given it a 9.0 at least.
