Earlier this year Shantae and the Pirate’s Curse was announced for the 3DS, and now even more Shantae is on the way, with Shantae: Half-Genie Hero coming to the Wii U (as well as PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, Xbox One, and Steam.)


Or it will be, if and when it reaches its Kickstarter funding. With over $60,000 of its $400,000 goal funded already on day one, it seems like a pretty sure bet, but let's not leave this to luck, ok? Not many details on what makes this stand out from the other Shantae titles are available yet, but for now this is what we know, straight from the Kickstarter page:

Now Shantae's headed for the living room, but her core gameplay elements will remain intact:

-Whipping! Destroy monsters, topple bosses, and solve puzzles with your hair
-Belly Dancing! Dance to transform into a variety of creature forms
-Platforming! Run and jump through deviously designed levels
-Exploring! Navigate a world of interconnected levels and Labyrinths
-Customizing! Earn new abilities, unlock stat-boosting artifacts, magic & costumes
-Storytelling! Flirtatious characters and wonderfully off-beat humor

Shantae: Half-Genie Hero continues the tradition of action/adventure in the spirit of Metroid, Castlevania, and the Legend of Zelda. Our goal is to introduce Shantae to a whole new audience with a fresh art style and a brand spanking new storyline. As always, we're putting pitch perfect controls in the front seat.

I probably won't get in on this one, though. Didn't really care for Shantae DSi, and WayForward in general tends to underwhelm. But I'm sure this will find plenty of funding without my help, based on their sprite art alone.

WayForward is actually pretty notorious for their jiggles. And they definitely find ways to show off the jiggles a lot more than is necessary to be realistic.

But I'm not really complaining, I love WayForward's games. And as this is the first console Shantae, you will finally get to check it out!

Why would you not get Shantae? It's basically a Metroid / Castlevania type game. And will probably only cost $10 or $15. And WayForward is a big enough developer who has handled big enough properties (A Boy and His Blob, Contra, Batman, Adventure Time, etc. to name a few) that a distrust of indies doesn't really apply to them.

I wanna play the 3DS Shantae before getting hyped for this. Mighty No. 9 is a cool concept and all, but I would like to see gameplay of it before getting hyped for that. Btw, the gameplay art for Mighty No. 9 kinda reminds me of Mighty Switch Force on Wii U.

I loved Shantae on DSiWare, so I'll definitely buy this if it comes to fruition, but I really don't care for the Duck Tales engine and style they've got going. WayForward are at their best when they do everything in glorious 2D, as far as I'm concerned. A Boy And His Blob on Wii is way more appealing than any of this 2.5D stuff.

I never got the Game Boy Color game at the time it came out, and I don't have a DSi or 3DS, so I've never had the opportunity to play a Shantae game. It's always been a series that interested me however, so I backed this

I thought Risky's Revenge was okay. I didn't really fall in love with the world or the character either. The music was awesome though - definitely the best part of the game. Virt knows his stuff.
