Nintendo's final licensed release on the NES, a frustratingly-addictive puzzle game in the vein of
Tetris.
As Toad, the player must attempt to clear the playing area. This is done by putting similarly-colored critters in a row, and then a bomb of the same color next to them to make a chain. They can by arranged vertically, horizontally, or diagonally (though later varations are only vulnerable to one specific direction, and some take multiple hits). Sometimes a colored diamond makes its way into the field of play; using it in a chain will eliminate everything of its color.
As time advances, Birdo's little bug friend drops bombs and monsters one at a time which Toad can kick, catch, pick up, move, and stack. He can also run up the wall or columns of creatures. If you take too long, Wario intervenes (he is not as forgiving as Birdo), making blocks and bombs fall faster with the ceiling caving in as well. If you clear the area, you advance to the next round and collect some coins. If you fail to do so, or a column reaches the ceiling, you lose. Unlike some games that end there, you have a life system (helped along by those coins you collected), and an opportunity to repeat the stage. You'll also engage in special boss battles, damaging them by completing chains whilst connected.
A similar but different version by the same name is also available on the
SNES.
