One of the best games of all time, or the best game of all time? I won't listen to any discussion that doesn't acknowledge one of those two options.

Metroid has always been a kind of strange Nintendo franchise to me. Most of the other franchises (at least from Nintendo internal developers) have a sort of similar tone... cartoonish, colorful, etc. Metroid though is just a straight up slick sci-fi thriller.

Anyway, I remember renting this game with my cousin and not really knowing what to expect, because to be honest, I never really got into the original Metroid game much don't kill me. Super Metroid, however, changed my world. I played through like half of the game in a single rental, and then went out and bought it later to play the rest. And then played through it a few more times. It's just so freaking brilliant. Awesome progression mechanics, awesome boss fights, awesome music... awesome everything. The controls are a tad bit awkward to go back to, but they still work.

Best game ever? Probably.

Metroid Prime is better but both belong to the greatest Nintendo franchise. I mean I don't just randomly pick avatars here on NW...

I'm probably the only person in the world who thinks this but IMO Fusion is better than Super. My list goes like this, 4 being the best, then 3, 1, Zero Mission, and finally 2. I consider Prime a different series, but of those games 1 is the best, then 2, Hunters, and lastly 3.

Other M is like wtfbbq?

Ditto, that lovely purple ship on my avatar isn't just random!

I didn't play Super Metroid until recently, which means I had already played the GBA games. Because of this, and because of the fact that I always heard that it's the best game of all time, I was a little disappointed. I mean, I really like Super Metroid, but I much prefer Metroid Prime (which is really strange because I generally love sidescrollers and hate first person shooters).

I do agree with Zero that the controls (in particular, the jumping) are a bit awkward, and finding all the items was a little tedious. Still, the mood is great and I like the minimal storytelling.

@canonjI'm in the same boat as you. I didn't play it (or almost any SNES game) until it came out on the V/C. I played and LOVED the original, but was never quite able to kill Mother Brain.

I had played and beat all 3 Prime games. They are some of my favorite games ever, and when I finally played and beat Super Metroid, it didn't disappoint.

The SNES is the only Nintendo console I never owned. Controls were a little strange at first (not sure how they correspond to the SNES controller), but easy enough to grasp, everything else was stellar.

I won't say it's the best game of all time (my vote is for Ocarina of Time), it definitely holds up even without nostalgia factoring in, but it very well could be the best 2d sidescroller of time.

The platforming in the GBA games is significantly more refined and IMO feels much better than the NES/GB/SNES games. The addition of the grapple move is a huge improvement, as is holding R to shoot at an angle, going back to the older games without those moves takes a little getting used to.

Super Metroid is one of my highest ranked games, and my favorite Metroid game out there. Trying Metroid as a kid was infuriating and impossible, even with the password. Super Metroid was the first Metroid title that said "hey man, you can do this" to me. Metroid Prime is good, but I much prefer the sidescrolling adventurey type.

I didn't really play Super Metroid till 2005/2006. I had rented it a few times but for whatever reason I could never quite understand how to go about playing Metroid games. But after Prime, Fusion and Zero Mission had been released I had finally learned how Metroid games play and I picked up a copy of Super Metroid when I got myself another SNES. Since then it has leapfrogged all but EarthBound and ALttP as my favorite SNES games which says a lot to me about how good it is.

@deathly_hallows I feel like the core controls of the GBA games are better, but I don't think either of them hold a candle to Super Metroid's world design.

The only problem with me is that it's hard to gauge just how good Super Metroid is - I know it so well by this point, I don't know how to accurately judge its lack of handholding. I guess I figured it out well enough when I was younger, but people new to the franchise might be turned off by its lack of direction. Heck, even the cutscenes in Zero Mission do a great job in pushing you further. They're such a simple addition, but whenever you see a cutscene in Zero Mission, you fucking pay attention.

I cannot take part in this conversation as I have only played the intro bit, despite owning a copy. Runs..........

Bought Super Metroid not too long after it came out. Was very much looking forward to it since Nintendo had made the terrible decision (I thought at the time) of putting the sequel to Metroid on the Game Boy with it's ugly black and white screen. Super Metroid was worth the 8-year wait. Best ending to a game maybe ever I still say after all these years. If it's not the greatest 2-D game ever, it's certainly in the top 3.

I played it back when it first came out and it was and is still one of my favorite games ever.

I played it for the first time just last year and I think it's one of the greatest games of all time. No question in my mind.

Anyone playing this right now? I'm thinking of burying myself in it tonight.

So apparently this has been happening.

These newer gamers gotta start somewhere. It's the only way they'll learn.

I'm pretty sure the "y can't metroid crawl?" is a joke though. And a pretty good one, hehe.

I think that they're all joke posts, just put up to be funny because of how different Metroid is from typical games of the time. The last two were posted by the same person, so they at least have to be.

At least, I'm really hoping they all are...
