Welcome to the official discussion thread for Mario Golf on the GBC!
To start, please add this game to your log, add it to your collection (if applicable), and (when you are ready) rate it using the link above!
Who else got this as part of the Club Nintendo thing? Let's talk about it! In part because I'm very confused! I spent like a half hour wandering around and I couldn't figure out how to get into any actual matches!
Yeah, I got it through Club Nintendo. Haven't even booted it up once. Too entrenched in Fire Emblem: Awakening.
I think they talked about this game in the latest RFN podcast, and the matches are initiated by talking to NPCs, I believe? I've only played the GBA version, and the GBC game is, by comparison, more bare-bones.
I played this game for the first time when it hit the 3DS VC last year...and loved it! It takes a little time to get the hang of the unusual RPG-ish layout, but once you hit the links, everything starts coming together.
I'm pretty sure you can do the tour by going to the first of four courses (forgot the name of it, but it's the easiest one) and talking to someone there. There are also all these little side challenges you can do, and if you do well enough in them, you acquire EXP and can make your golfer stronger.
The golfing mechanics in this game are great. It's the first 2D golf game I've really been able to get into.
Which brings me to a question that is never answered: I seem to remember reading that the GBA courses were updates to the GBC courses? True? Or Urban Myth??
FINE, I'll Google it. Just a mo.
Hmm, couldn't find it. Maybe I remembered wrongly...
Was it announced? Which one was N64 connectivity eventually cut from, again? Golf, I think?
I'm pretty excited for Mario Golf 3DS. I don't think that golf needs the RPG structure as much as tennis does. The courses themselves should deliver enough variety and dynamics.
Where do you guys stand on realistic courses vs. wacky Mario courses? Mario Golf has always come down on the realistic side. But I like the wacky stuff. Warp Pipes and superfast greens, and such.
@Zero Go to the golf course you want to play and "sign up" for the tournament or if you want to unlock players go see the club champions in the lounge and challenge them to a match.
Well I was hoping for some tutorial or something since I haven't played one of these old school golf games in forever. But also just explaining how things work. Do I need to level up before I can compete in things? How do I level up? What should I do first? Etc. etc.
Still agree with Jargon though, should have been some kind of tutorial that helps point you in the right direction. I still have no sense of how the "progression" in this game works.
I just booted this up for the first time today, and I like it so far...much better than NES Tournament Golf. I'm only playing a practice round right now though, guess I'll "quest" a bit tonight.
I made it to the Links club and holy crap this tournament is a pain! Whoever they pay to trim the freeway needs to be fired. Overgrown weeds everywhere! My best is finishing with +1 while I think I'd need at least a -7 to tie in first place
