Shin Megami Tensei IV on the 3DS
9.08/10 from 6 user ratings

Welcome to the official discussion thread for Shin Megami Tensei IV on the 3DS!

How many people here are taking advantage of the Fire Emblem Awakening + Shin Megami Tensei IV = $30 credit for the 3DS or Wii U?

I think it's a fantastic idea and I think this will get people (like me) who didn't initially plan on picking the game up to do so in order to take advantage of the offer. The only Shin Megami game I played before was Devil Survivor cause I love turn based games.

I'm about an hour in, the game kicked my ass, I lowered the difficulty (12 play coins to revive myself! ouch!). I'm really enjoying it so far.

I opted to pick up a physical copy because the packaging looked really slick.

I never really dug any Shin Megami titles besides Persona and Devil Survivor. Never a fan of Devil Summoner, Nocturne or SMT (Is Nocturne part of the "normal" SMT line? I know Persona wasn't originally SMT in Japan but they gave it the familiar label in the U.S. and it stuck everywhere.) -- how is it in comparison to Persona?

Never played a Mega Ten game but I'm crazy excited for this. I just get the feeling I'll love it.
European release is still foggy. I wonder if we'll get a similar promotion.

This should have been made an official discussion topic...

But the game is incredible so far. Loving everything about it. Nice visuals, great 3D effects, interesting story, excellent voice acting, music, and challenge is definitely there. I've only played Persona 3 (which I didn't like very much) prior to this but SMTIV blows it out of the water.

I picked this up yesterday too! Didn't have a chance to crack it open yet, but I certainly will today!

@VofEscaflowne

Zero can do that if we ask nicely.

The game is great, though 8 hours in, I'm kind of stuck. If anyone knows where I can find Palleiad or whatever his name is, I'd be thankful.

You actually like the voice acting, Fabien? I wish it weren't in there, it's so incredibly hammy.

@Guillaume

The VA is not that bad. Well, not that bad when you compare it to some other JRPGs. Also, I'm not that far in so I can't help you out with finding Palleiad... Or whatever his name is.

@Guillaume

I don't know, I think it's great The stuff at the beginning was kinda eh but the actual main characters do a great job so far I think.

People who have been playing this and played Devil Summoner: Soul Hackers, how do the two games compare gameplay wise? From what I'm seeing, they seem similar.

Dealing with demons to ask them to join you is fun. They take you stuff and money, then say they have to kill you because you offended them. They also want your health and/or magic. I had one nearly kill me last night, then tell me he was going home because he was late for tea.

I think I am going to enjoy this game.

I basically have to get this game because of the $30 credit, I have to!

My sentiments as well, although I've never played Persona 3. Everything that is a comment about the game sums up exactly how I feel so far.

Oh, and I've already got the $30 credit on my 3DS eShop acct. That will be nice when Mario and Luigi rolls around. :)

There are a TON of elements that carry over from both games, so if you've played those, you'll slip right into this one. The sprites have a definite bump up in quality, though; just wait 'til you get a load of the fist angel you can get by fusing demons. I stared for a bit.

I bought the game digitally yesterday MOSTLY because of the $30 deal. I already had fire emblem, I was on the fence about Mario and Luigi Dream Team (a game i would buy digital as opposed to the boxed version for pokemon and zelda this fall) but the $30 promotion meant that I could enjoy a game now and get a huge discount on a game I want in august...

Anyway... I went in blind with this game... I loved Shin Megami Tensei Nocturne and both Persona 3 and 4 and I knew I would love this game, i just have an affinity for the games in this series. I do love have this game cuts out the bullshit and makes it all game. They make the world quick and snappy to move around so that you still get the atmosphere but also get to move the story without running around everywhere. At first I was a little let down about the 2d battles; however, after thirty minutes in i appreciated it greatly because it is just so quick and snappy and makes the game fun to play.

I am not far in the game being at the two hour mark. i just unlocked K's Taver and the quest board. I have to do the three challenge quests to beat my friends. I saved right before the boss hunt quest were you fight the chimera. I died a few times so I went back to grind and get life stones to get the White Samurai outfit so that I am not weak against the fire attack the boss does.

The music is great, the presentation is great, the game is so damn polished, and the story seems interesting. I am really looking forward to where the story goes.

I wish people who evangelized persona 4 golden on vita would make the jump to 3ds to play this game, it is the better game.

@Scrawnton

I'm sorry to break it to you but you didn't have to purchase the digital copy to get the credit. You just needed to register the games on Club Nintendo.
07/18/13, 15:57
@Guillaume oh, no I knew that. I bought it digitally because I buy all 3ds games digitally, unless I want to collect the box like Pokemon or zelda. I knew physical would work but I wanted the digital version.

Damn this game is really hard. I'm at a boss that attacks everyone in one turn and the attacks are just brutal and they poison everyone. Having a lack of skills that cure poison, it really drains me from turn to turn. Though I finally got a Media skill on a few of my demons so that should help counter some of the poison effects.

Why isn't there more people talking about this game!? I seriously think this just shot up to my GOTY. It's just incredible right now.
07/19/13, 06:59
@VofEscaflowne

I was expecting more people to talk about it too. I'm roughly 5 hours into the game. I won't lie, I had to turn down the difficulty. The battle system is really engaging and acquiring and fusing demons is addicting.

That's an extremely bold claim.

@Xbob42
Also, let the poor Vita have it's day in the sun, however brief.
07/19/13, 13:37
@Xbob42 it may be a bold claim, but i stand by it. This is the better game. I loved persona 4 but its not perfect. It has too much fluff and is bogged down at times. This game fixes all of those issues. My claim is that SMT IV is the better game when put next to P4G.

And the Vita did have its day in the sun, and now that time is over, P4G has come and gone and 3DS went back in to beast mode this year. I am not knocking the Vita, i own it, it is a great system. But its line-up compared to 3ds this year is embarrassing. I look forward to the day when vita gets more support for games with games I want because it is an amazing piece of hardware and is better than 3ds in all ways outside of the one thing that matters, games.
