Nintendo was incredibly curt with their announcement window for the June 2023 Nintendo Direct. I think next year I’ll have to just prepare something for the start of June and hope a Direct still happens. Nonetheless, the summer was kicked off with a Nintendo Direct and it’s clear that things didn’t go the way many of us expected them to. I give the presentation the highest B+ I can personally, but there was a lot to love throughout. Thank you to all who participated in the Predict-a-ton on such short notice. There was less than 24 hours to get your votes in and we actually had a sizable participation compared to last year. I appreciate that so much. I didn’t have time to make a Google Forms and incorporate those outside of the Negative World forums this time, so it’s back to a year of being all intimate with the Negative World crew. Just like the old days! That all said, Let’s take a look at the results.

To be fair, this year was one of those years were so little on the list actually is confirmed which makes it riskier for those who dared to be ambitious. Here’s how everything shook out!
FIRST PLACE: Mop it up: -12 pts
SECOND PLACE: Brick: -19 pts
THIRD PLACE: Shadowlink -34 pts4th Place: Infinitywave: -36 pts
5th Place: Stan McStanly: -64 pts
6th Place: TheBigG753: -66 pts
7th Place: Secret_Tunnel: -72 pts
8th Place: DrFinkelstein: -82 pts
9th Place: TriforceBun: -83 ptsMop it up had -12 points but can still stand proud as the winner of this year’s Predict-a-ton! Mop it up’s self-proclaimed strategy of “being a big baby” paid off! Unfortunately nobody saw it coming that Super Mario RPG was going to be the big remake. Most of us wanted a Chrono Trigger remake and I have to hope that some day it will happen. It’s interesting to see how close different pairings were to changing positions but ultimately the group’s scores were widespread. Generating superlatives happens to be a time consuming task but I can’t help myself from just keeping that trend going anyway.
----------The ‘Pre-Order Bonus’ Award:This award is for the option in each category which was picked the most and also came true.
Winners:(A) Pikmin 4 gets a significant focus (more than just a single trailer)
(B) New 2D Mario game revealed
(C) No Class-C options came true.
(D) No Class-D options came true.
If there were two things people were confident in, it was absolutely that Pikmin 4 was getting it’s great unveiling (since it releases in July) and that the rumored 2D Mario was likely.----------The ‘Captain Blubber’ Award:This award is for the option in each category which was picked the most but it didn’t come true, thus causing the most upset.
Winner:(A) Splatoon 3’s Wave 2 DLC Detailed
(B) Metroid Prime 4 development progress update
(C) 3-way Tie: Metroid Prime 4 is confirmed for 2023, Special edition Switch or Joy-con announced, Game which released over 12 months ago receiving surprise DLC
(D) 2-way Tie: Successor to the Nintendo Switch Announced, Xenoblade Chronicles X is coming to Switch
I think it was quite surprising to most of us that Splatoon 3’s next big DLC wasn’t mentioned. Plus we’ve now gone another June without any hint of an update from Metroid Prime 4… the game that supposedly exists. Perhaps they didn’t want to overshadow a new 2D Mario? For the C and D categories, there were a lot of low selections that just happened to be picked. A Special Edition Switch or a Successor would have been pretty stunning to see. Xenoblade Chronicles X on Switch would round out the series on the platform but it didn’t happen. Metroid Prime 4 definitely didn’t get a 2023 confirmation… in fact I think it was confirmed not to be for 2023 with that lack of showing. Sigh. So much potential in these blubbering misses.----------The ‘7th Generation Booster’ Award:This award is for the category which was picked the least, and thus signifies what people thought was the craziest option to go with.
Winners:All with 0 votes…
Fire Emblem: Genealogy of the Holy War remake revealed
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe’s Booster Course DLC gets new expansion announced
A new console option is coming to the NSO service
Perfect Dark is coming to a Nintendo Switch near you
New Animal Crossing: New Horizons news or DLC
Monolith Soft’s newest IP revealed
Twilight Princess and/or Wind Waker get Switch ports
I think it makes a lot of sense to not vote for any of these. Though I think we’d all love to see these happening. The NSO service might not expand at all until the next console. Animal Crossing support was very unlikely to be revitalized considering how quickly it died, to be honest. Monolith Soft isn’t likely ready to show anything not Xenoblade yet but I was surprised that nobody felt these long-rumored Zelda ports would be shown. Perhaps that’s because of the timing compared to the release of Tears of the Kingdom.----------The ‘Fence Swinger’ Award:This award is for the contestant who had the widest possible point spread potential, and it paid off.
Winner: No winner! :(
Since nobody earned a positive score this time, the Fence Swinger award cannot be given. So it’s on to the next one!----------The ‘Brawl Tripper’ Award:This award is for the contestant who had the widest possible point spread, but it did not work out.
Winner: TriforceBun (+/- 132 possible points)
It’s interesting to see how the bottom two contestants (TriforceBun and I) ended up having the most point spread. I was not far behind him with 118 potential points. Perhaps being conservative here is the trick… but I really respect the gusto to guess!----------The ‘Link’s Crossbow Training’ Award:This award is for the contestant who had the best accuracy in their voting choices. They had the most correct answers regardless of point values won or lost.
Winner: Brick (with 66.67% accuracy)
Congratulations to Brick! He had one of the lower quantities of choices but he only had two misses, so the picks were quite good!----------The ‘Switzerland’ Award:This award is for the contestants who managed to net a neutral score of 0 points.
Winner: Nobody!
Our winner this year got closest but nobody earned the Switzerland Award this year.----------The ‘Metroid Dread’ Award:This award is for the franchise that people most voted for in the optional bonus but it didn’t show up; thus a missing in action title.
Winner: Rhythm Heaven
Last year, Donkey Kong, Wario Land, and Wave Race were all eagerly guessed and anticipated. So it is interesting to me that everyone abandoned those picks this year and opted for Rhythm Heaven, which was popular, all things considered.----------That’s it for 2023! The last couple of years have been quite weird but I hope people are still having fun watching these Directs and playing this game. Thank you for the participation, especially on such short notice. The participation here is a nice reminder of the community this place continues to hold. It’s a special place. I hope everyone’s been having fun with their video games and that you’re excited for things on the horizon. If Nintendo’s done anything right this generation, it’s that they’ve been able to have something for everyone.
Be safe. Be happy. Spread love. Game on!
