Retro Game Club Discussion Thread 19: Zelda Oracle of Ages & Oracle of Seasons [community]

The lands of Labrynna and Holodrum cry out for a saviour.
The forces of evil are gaining power.
The Triforce summons you.

As Link, take up your sword once more to determine the fate of two worlds, in the Game Boy Colour classics. Wield the powers of the Oracles to traverse time and control the seasons. And link your quests to reveal the hidden truth in an epic meta-adventure that is greater than the sum of its parts.

Primary Discussion Begins on page 3!

Heroes of Power
(Complete Oracle of Seasons)

Heroes of Wisdom
(Complete Oracle of Ages)

Heroes of Courage
(Complete the linked ending to both games)

My cartridges are ready.

I'll be buying them on day one. I've only briefly played one of them (Ages I believe), so I'm looking forward to taking them both for a spin!

You just reminded me of a dungeon that gave me hell as a kid. Oh nostalgia.

I'll be playing to some degree. I fucking love these games.
Posted: 05/20/13, 20:25:52
I would like to play. Which one should I start with?

Oracle of Ages is more puzzle-based. Oracle of Seasons is more action-based. Which would suit you better?

I am in like Errol Flynn.

Also wondering which to play first. Apparently one is puzzle and the other is combat? I figure I'll go puzzle first, because I think I'd be less likely to burn out if I get the brain-strainers out of the way first and then move on to some good old mindless mass killing.

Zelda 2
Link's Awakening
Oracle of Ages
Oracle of Seasons
Minish Cap
Four Swords

All experienced for the first time on 3DS. It is a pretty good system for Zelda.

I like nate38's idea of doing the puzzles first, then the action one.

Still have the originals and the means to play them, but will likely download both for 10 bucks.

Same. I've been holding off replaying the original carts for just this moment. It's pretty cool having so many Zelda games available on just one system .

Damn straight!

I have the cartridges. I don't think I've played these games in years, so I may give them a go when this thing rolls around.
Posted: 05/21/13, 03:33:08
I've never played these before... but I hear from some people that they're not all that good and others (in this thread) that it's great. I'm confused!
Posted: 05/21/13, 03:46:01

Don't be confused. Just ignore the people who claim that they're not good!

They follow a very similar template to Link's Awakening, so if you liked that game, you'll love these.

Play them and judge for youself.
I personally rate Ages over LA.
Posted: 05/21/13, 04:15:35
I will be joining as soon as I finish Link's Awakening. I'm about two dungeons behind.
Posted: 05/21/13, 04:34:18

People who think these aren't good, are judgmental about GB Zelda's in general. Ignore the fools and play. It's a great duo!

I beat Seasons and started Ages back in the day... I might have to give them another go
Posted: 05/21/13, 04:43:16
I will be buying these on day one...I have yet to play them as the DS Lite was my first handheld device..

They're alright, but it's clear when I play them that they're not developed by Nintendo. They feel more like fan-games to me.

And for the record, I'm a huge fan of Link's Awakening, and I like Phantom Hourglass and Minish Cap quite a lot. These two aren't the worst in the series, but they're far from the top of the list.
