Welcome to another episode of The Negative World Podcast! This time Joe (Ninsage) and Stephen (DrFinkelstein) go it alone without a guest and for that, the show is a little shorter than normal. Well, the format is a little different too.

Joe and Stephen start off with some banter around the new Nintendo NES Classic Edition. Then they discuss Japan's new Kirby Cafes. They wrap things up with a mention of the new amiibo functionality coming to Animal Crossing: New Leaf as well as a bit of banter on the notion of retroactively adding amiibo functionality to games.

Once the break hits you'll find familiar music if you like to catch em' all… Joe and Stephen take time to dissect their experiences with Pokemon GO, Niantic and The Pokemon Company's new phone app. Both gentlemen have had ample time with it and discuss the social aspect they've faced as well as the glitches they've encountered. As someone who walked three miles tonight in hopes of catching a Psyduck, it seems the Pokemon GO hype is not GOing anywhere.

Great episode, fellas! What do you Fink? is always welcome, that's for sure. I would like to accept the challenge and state that I really enjoy Mario Bros. I think I first really got into it on one of those gba Super Mario games, which I believe was a bit updated from the original. That said, I do like the original plenty as well, and look forward to playing it one the Nes Classic.

Not having a smart phone means I'm sadly not playing Pokemon Go, but I am playing it vicariously through my daughter. Your conversation was fun and I share both of your enthusiasm for the wild success this game is enjoying. My only real thing I want to comment on is the topic of monetization. Guys, just go ahead and spend a few bucks! I already have, to the tune of $27 so far. For the longest time I shared the mentality of never wanting to spend any money ever on a F2P game, bemoaning the concept of chasing whales.

Then I came to 2 realizations. The first was that this method of monetizing games is simply not going anywhere. It gives the vast majority of players the opportunity to to play at their leisure completely free. For those that wish to engage at a more intense rate, they're free to spend what they want. And of course you're encouraged to spend more for the best value, just like almost everything else I spend money on. The second realization I came to, as I looked around my room at the dozens of amiibo and plushes and toys and several versions of 3DSes and every Nintendo system ever along with game after game after game, was that I ALREADY AM A NINTENDO WHALE!!!!! For me to draw an arbitrary line at their F2P offerings seemed downright silly. Nintendo, please take all my money!

Thanks for the kind words Brandon. At the very least I will likely drop a few bucks to expand my items and Pokemon capabilities. I think with the left over coin I can get another egg incubator which is nice.

Glad too to hear you enjoyed Mario Bros. It never grabbed me but there's a reason it's in that package. Glad it's something you can get your head around even if I can't.

Not exactly true, though trying to parse exactly what they do get is difficult, since they own part of The Pokemon Company, a part of one of the other owners of The Pokemon Company, and a part of Niantic, the creators of the game. Still happy to support it no matter how much they're directly profiting from it.

Yea, Nintendo definitely makes some cash on PoGo. We just don't know how much and probably never will.

I was thinking of purchasing that PoGo watch thing once I figure out exactly what it does. So, that could be a way that I feel good and financially support this super cool game.

I saw in amongst the glut of NX rumours that it will also support their smartphone offerings. Which would be cool if true and includes Go. That would be my way in.


....Which of course would mean that the unit would come with GPS as well? And more than just basic wifi?
