Atlus' throw back to the dungeon crawlers of old is a harsh but intensely rewarding friend. It can be played in short bursts, but you'll likely have it in your DS for a good few months.
Etrian Odyssey has decent graphics, a barebones story and at times, most times, a cruel difficulty curve. Classic RPG turn based combat, skill trees and the old, familiar life of grinding and constant equipment upgrades are firmly in place. However the overall atmosphere is unique, the focus on mapping your own way through the forest labyrinth with the stylus is very involving, the characters you create soon become very personal to you, the game twists at the end like a very twisty-turny thing and the sense of achievment as you progress is probably second to none on the system.
FUN FACT: Etrian Odyssey was only released in a limited run, and it's unexpected quality and popularity now mean copies sell on ebay for over $1,000,000.
