Animal Crossing: New Leaf Review (Nintendo 3DS) (9.7)  by

Animal Crossing... I still remember getting up early before heading to my high school classes just to see what Tom Nook was selling that day. This game series has always held such a dear place in my heart. I think it has to do with the fact that heading to the land of Plaisant, Tranquil, or other towns of mine always being a great escape for me. Making Bells, filling my catalog, and fishing in the ocean were always points of peace for me. While I've been very public about my discontent with AC: City Folk, I have a new-found hope once more for New Leaf. From all the information that has been dished out due to the game's release already in Japan, and Nintendo pushing more information through Nintendo Directs, I am confident this game will be a fresh take on a classic and comforting idea.

The game released in North America on June 9th, 2013 and released in other territories shortly after.

Please use this thread for all discussion on the game. If you would like to make trades or visit towns, please use the specific Animal Crossing New Leaf Trading Thread for further assistance. It makes more sense to keep this focused on the gameplay and game discussion while leaving bartering out of it. There are no Friend Codes this time around for Animal Crossing, which is a blessing! Many of us have already befriended ourselves via the 3DS Friend Codes Thread thread. That thread will be where we continue to befriend each other and trade 3DS IDs for the sake of visiting each other's towns.

Many many years ago I discovered a wonderful Animal Crossing website which has a great catalog feature set up. Now, the new game will mean it'll take time for the site to get a full correct catalog up and running but I expect it to work beautifully once more to allow anyone to track their catalog there. You can find this website at the Animal Crossing Community page. They also have forums there which are very active right now in anticipation of this game. Granted, the general age of the members of that site fall a bit lower than here, but I've found over all the years I've been there that the discussion is still mostly pleasant and easy.

Lastly, I want you all to enjoy the music from this new game or any of the games, whenever you want. The following site will allow you to hear the "Xam" or "Xpm" music that would naturally occur in your life right now as if you were in the game. You can select from any of the Animal Crossing games and the music will continually loop until the hour changes. It's pretty cool. You can find that page here. It's by default at the City Folk music.

So again, everyone enjoy this game! Enjoy this discussion! If you're interested in being negative about the title, just find your way to a different thread for that because this thread is about the experience and meant to bring the community together during the launch of one of the most community driven games Nintendo offers.

Say hello to Kapp'n, cause we're about to make it into town on June 9th.

(One more quick note; Keep an eye out for the game's review, which I will write sometime in the end of June probably.)

@ludist210 But that's why I'm having trouble defining my goals. Like, what is my motivation here? To make a town that others will come and visit and say "hey, that's pretty neat!"? I suppose so. I can't remember what my motivation was with the first game.

@ludist210 sadly i got resetti and lost massive badges due to supposedly not saving when closing. Tho i swore i did. I just didn't opt to get the station yet. Town is working on windmill now.

@TriforceBun I didn't know that was the case i just went up and had to pay 477,600 up front no loan. However i have every room on first floor, basement and 2nd floor. I've only expanded the 2nd floor in size and one room on first floor, getting 2nd expansion on room on left now. Geez it's a lot of expanding and costs. I plan on saving for Tiara next tho, expansions will always be available and costly.

@Zero

I guess you should just trade your game in. You just don't *get* it, man!!!

I guess for me, there's an addictive nature in taking kind of a dumpy town/city/world and gradually transforming it into something great. It's a big part of the appeal in games like SimCity and Harvest Moon, too--there's a constant sense of improvement, and there's no shortage of things to do. So for a bunch of people, having an impressive town is a big part of the appeal.

The other idea is that as you play through the game and gradually make money, you start seeing more and more cool furniture and stuff you want to put in your home, but the lack of space is a deterrent. So by upgrading your house, you get to have more rooms devoted to different ideas (man cave? Kitchen? Nintendo item showcase? Island-style cabana set? Moon theme?) and get the kind of unique place that you want.

Others just like the idea of the museum a lot and trying to fill out their bug/fish/fossil/seafood/art encyclopedias and going through the museum learning facts about these (real-world) things.

And then there're those that want the perfect environment, filled with tons of fruit trees and flowers and flower hybrids and perfect fruits.

I'm kind of a fan of all of this so everything I do in the game is in some way related to one of these goals (that, or just relaxing and goofing around with friends). There's not an ending, but there're still plenty of things to shoot for. I guess the appeal is similar to most games, to see how "well" you can "do" in the game environment. It's sort of a vague term in this case, but the goals are there.

It's like jazz. Some people are all zibiddy-do-woop-be-boop and others just doobie-doobie-doo.

Why aren't you trying to be on this new podcast tomorrow with all the animal crossing talk planned?

@DrFinkelstein

Sorry! It's a really busy time for me right now with comic 500 and some upcoming craziness. In all honesty, I shouldn't be PLAYING Animal Crossing this much right now...

So...was that intentional, wickedsymphony, or do we need to all pitch in and buy you a hat? If it was intentional, that's cool. I saw someone on Neogaf complaining about how long it was taking to tan; I think they need your advice. Did you leave your character just standing there all day one with the 3DS plugged in or something? I accidentally did that the other night, but (a) it was night and (2) I had a hat. Chances are very low that Vicki will ever tan because I work all freakin' day and it's usually dark by the time I turn the game on.
06/28/13, 23:30
@VickiL not intentional at all, I just play a lot during the day hours i guess and i do leave it on w/my gate open for other sometimes. if i'm not playing. but so far i've been using an umbrella and have had stormy days so it's fading. cannot wait to be back to my old self.

I added my dream town to the list... Not that its notable but why not?

@TheOldManFromZelda

What a goof! He did the same thing with Tri, ugh. Why overanalyze so much? Jeepers.

Oh my goodness! Check out your HHA Showcases for Reggie's house. Particularly, his bed sheets. I laughed out loud.

@vids

Geez, how long did that take? I haven't done one of those signs yet. Does it let you see what it'll look like real-time or did you have have to keep redoing it to make sure everything lined up?

Makes me wish I had the desire to do patterns again. I've just done a couple simple shirts and umbrellas so far. I should reload my old AC games to see if I did anything worth redoing in New Leaf.
06/30/13, 00:32
@gojira

I started it out yesterday morning and finished it today. You cannot get a live preview of how the cutout looks in town, just the thumbnail preview. It was a lot of back and forth eyeballing it. If you are looking to include the "real world" background make sure to do it at daytime because the night will darken the colors on your standee.

Also make sure to adjust the span of your canvas of the preview. In other words your pattern area does not cover the entire standee and you will need to adjust what pixels you are look at by moving the preview window. When I first attempted Lurtz's rough outline he was half the size and centered because I overlooked this feature.

@vids

I'm definitely not planning on trying it myself. I can draw decently, but I struggle with the limitations of these patterns. I've never been good with color either.

Is the Best Buy DLC orderable? I didn't get a chance to go for this one but I don't want to miss it. Can someone order me one? Or let me hold one of the Raccoon Wall Clocks so I can then order it?
06/30/13, 03:58
Does anyone have a Tiara (girl's crown) in their store? Wicked is on the look out.
06/30/13, 04:06
@vids You have my all-time favorite villager, Tom!!!

@DrFinkelstein I have a Raccoon Clock, I didn't know it was a Best Buy exclusive item. What else is there?
